Post A Picture Of Your House Or Apartment

Thu Aug 02, 2007 4:58 am

Hey all, I thought it would be interesting to see what your houses look like and see if they match your personality. I have a few photos of my small townhouse/apartment. I'm the only one living here, and while it is small, it's just cozy enough for me and my puppy. Plus I think I've decorated it well. Not my forte, but it looks cohesive in some way. So here are some pics of where I live.

The front side of my place:

Patio where I do a lot of Grilling. I LOVE my grill!

My Living Room: And yes, that is a painting of the Petronas Towers in Malaysia in the corner. One of my favorite pieces of art.

My Kitchen:

Another View of my Living Room Looking toward the back:

And a view of the living room from the back side looking toward my "office." You will see my puppy peeking behind the couch! Too cute!

Hope to see some of your places.

UAL

PS- I purposely left out my bedroom because it is a WRECK at the moment. Plus there's nothing interesting in there to see, just a TV and a bed. Hoping to get some new bedroom furniture for X-mas. I also didn't post upstairs because it just has a guest bedroom with a bed and TV in it. Boring.

Funny how homes are different across the world. Your living area seems so modern... yet your "shower room" (bathroom) seems so old. I find it pretty funny. Seems like a lot of places across Europe are like that. Then again, our homes in the US are probably so weird to you guys.  Silly

Maybe it is the lighting. It has only been installed since last October. Everything is still bright, shiny and squeaky clean.

I can't pass a photo thread without posting, so here goes . . .

Mine's a terrace house, which was originally a school ("Sewing school for girls", believe it or not!), which gets a mention locally as far back as 1820. The school vacated the premises at the turn of the 20th century, and in 1902 it became a terrace of six individual houses. I was born in No 2, moved to No 3 when I was five, and finally moved to No 1 in 1966, where I've lived ever since. And I would never move. I have to admit, it looks crap from outside, but . .

it gets better once inside   I love the old floor, but it's not the original. It came from an old convent.

The front room. There was a fire next door in 1985, and a flood in 1986, both of which caused a lot of damage. The front part of the house had to be gutted, and most of the old features were lost, apart from the mirror, which has been in the house for 105 years, although I put it where it is now.

The kitchen surived, apart from having to have new units installed. I've kept the rustic look, seeing that the ceiling and floor are original. And yes, the range DOES work, although I rarely use it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Braybuddy/SANY0074.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Braybuddy/SANY0076.jpg

And . . . last but not least . . . the hospitality suite

My dad bought it for £150 (about €187) in 1966, and it's worth a shocking €500,000-€600,000 now, although that means absolutely nothing to me, as I'm not selling, and I'd only have to pay the same or more for something similar.

Well if we are putting parent's homes on here, I've got to add. My parents house is quite amazing architecturally. Sort of Art Deco meets Gothic. I'll never have a house like that, considering what I get paid to do my job. Sad

My parents bought it from my grandparents a couple of years ago when they decided the house was too large for them. It's really not as big as it looks, but it has a very neat presence about it I think.

Here is the house I'm living in:

It is a typical Hunsrueck farmhouse, built in 1900, but fully modernised in 1996. The beams you see on the outside are fake, but it has been really built in such a structure. When the modernised the house, the tore out the old single glazed windows and installed insulated ones. Also the whole facade was covered with a thick insulating layer, which then was covered with plaster. At this time they also intalled the fake beams to simulate the way the house looked originally.
The house is rented, but I'm planning to buy something similar out here. Houses are quite cheap around here and I'm sure the prices will go up.

The roof is covered with slate, which is very common around here, since the whole hill range is made out of this stuff (actually 100 years ago about every village around here had it's own slate mine).
The house contains three bedrooms, a big one with it's own bathroom in the former attic and two on first floor. I use one as a visitor's room and library, while the other one is my office / electronics shop.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/jkrusat/Bench-small.jpg
The ground floor is effectively one big room and contains the huge kitchen and the rather small living room, plus a bathroom.
I also rented the former barn, which is directly attached to the house and which I use as a work shop and for storage and a big garage with it's own attic, which I also use as workshop (at the moment I repair my motorbike in there) and for storage. The house is heated with propane gas, but I have two wood stoves (the Scandinavian type) as a backup.
I also can use the garden and set up a few beds to grow my own vegetables.

Approx. 10,000 sq ft. if you don't include the indoor swimming pool or the garages, which most houseplans don't count those things in the square footage. From the street it looks massive, but if you get a side view of it, theres not a lot of meat to it, just length.. It's a great house for entertaining, which is something my parents like to do. The lawns and gardens are quite nice in the spring and summer months. If I can find anymore photos, i'll post them.....

Essentially... I love the building and the staff is fantastic, but there's not really anything within walking distance* [and I still haven't figured out where the nearest 'real' grocery store is, but I always wind up in Cleveland Heights] and there are things I'd like to do that I can't really do to a place that I'm renting...not to mention that renting is "like throwing money away". The new place is a little bit closer to work, as well.

The straw that finally broke the camel's back was that I got a VM from the leasing agent a couple of weeks ago letting me know my lease was up at the end of August and naming the new rates for the suite and my parking space...still fair but more than I was interested in paying for a place I don't own.

I guess I shouldn't have adjusted the color saturation on the photos.  Silly

My artwork is rather colorful because they are all 1960's-1970's signed rock posters from the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Eric Clapton, etc. My dad bought them on a trip in Aspen and he gave them to me one year for Christmas, when I got my first place in Dallas. They are worth a lot of money, and while they are somewhat ugly, I can't afford expensive artwork and since these are very rare and expensive, I put them up. They are good conversation pieces. And the rug that I have in my living room is an antique Persian (I think) rug that my grandmother got when she was in the Middle East before I was born. She used it in her formal living room until she redecorated, and gave it to me. I had more "color coordinated" furniture in the past, but I had an apartment fire when I was in college and lost most of everything, but my rug, my armoire, and some of the rock posters I have. The entire living room was burned to a crisp.

WOW!

Some of the places on here look so fantastic and big, especially those big houses in the US!

I have a question though. I am a city person, and I love living in London. Even though I currently occupy a matchbox here, I am very happy to know that I can be in the city having a good time and a drink late at night, indeed 24 hours a day, and be home via one bus within 15 minutes.

Many of these massive houses look like they're in rural areas.

Tell me, if you don't drive (and therefore can't drink), how on Earth do you get home after a night on the razzle?

Taxis must be expensive, and surely you must rely on the designated driver to live close by?

Or am I totally wrong about this?

Drive. Thats why the Drunk Driving rate in the US is so high. 1 out of every 4 drivers after 9:00 P.M. (21:00) is driving under the influence.

Nope, you're right on. I live 30-45 minutes out of Seattle, and 15 mins from the closest town...that's driving with no traffic.  Smile If we want to go out and have a few drinks, either Mr. Harlot or I have to stop drinking early and sober up, or we go out early, both drink, and then shop or something until we get sober. Or we carpool downtown with friends, but that still means we have a 15 minute drive home after getting back to their place.

But we are grown up and don't go out for boozy nights all that often, so it's not a big deal. It is true that American cities are spread out, and that public transit isn't always that great, so you'd better be prepared to figure out a safe way to get home with your car.

When we have parties, we offer up spare bedrooms for those friends who wish to drink to excess so they don't have to drive home at all.
But that was when I ruled the world

You got your priorities right my friend, that's all i can say!

and that public transit isn't always that great,

What you need is an electrified rail system like in Europe.

If he said an hour later then maybe I would believe it. Especially here in Montana...

My parents (the pic of the big house) live in an area of Oklahoma City called "Nichols Hills." It's actually just a few miles north of downtown. Most of the houses in Nichols Hills was built for the Oil boomers in the early 20th century. Property value in Oklahoma and Land is relatively cheap than compared to other areas of the US. While the lots in Nichols Hills are rather large, because they accomodate large houses, they aren't that expensive when you compare the same size house and acreage in say, Miami or Los Angeles. Typically lots in Nichols Hills are 2+ acres, some less, some more, but they usually sell for around $600,000 to $1,000,000, which is rather high for Oklahoma City, but relatively low in comparison to other places in the US. Many of the houses in Nichols Hills were built in the early to mid 1900's. However, the current trend is to buy the old existing house and land, tear it down, and build a new house on the property. Therefore, we are seeing a number of new and HUGE homes go in in the Nichols Hills area. Due to the lack of available lots in Nichols Hills, this is what people have to resorrt to doing if they want a brand new home. Oklahoma City is rather diverse when it comes to homes. And we have a TON of Huge Historical homes that are just about 1/2 a mile north of downtown in an area called Mesta Park and Heritage HIlls. Those houses are OLD, but very beautiful and most of them are historical sites. Though the lots they are on are relatively small for the size of the home.

Tulsa is another city that has a lot of "Oil Boomer" homes in the Lewis St., Utica area.

As far as public transportation in Oklahoma City, there virtually is NONE. We have recently acquired a bus system, but I've never used it and not many people do. There are no railways other than cargo, though we did have Amtrack to Dallas a few years ago, not sure if it is still there. If you drink, you have to call the cab company for a cab. It's not like you can just step out on the street and get one, you have to call them.

My house has been on the market for a few months. If it doesn't sell in 60 days from today, I'll be looking for one of these to live in. The sheriff's auction is scheduled for October 2nd.

Yes indeed, it is. At least I like it very much.

Here is the location:

"Wohnung" = My Flat (Villa Martia)
"Buero" = My Office (Parkway Parade)

And it's only a five minutes walk to the east coast beach!

Matt,

That's a great looking "Loft" apartment. I like how the ceiling tapers inward.
