We Claim This Sea Bed For Russia

Thu Aug 02, 2007 7:06 pm

.... and all that's under it.

Getting their flag there first....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6927395.stm

Two Russian mini-submarines have reached the seabed below the North Pole on a mission aimed at boosting Moscow's claims to the Arctic, reports say.

Explorers aboard the Mir-I and Mir-II plan to carry out tests and plant a capsule with a Russian flag 4,200m (14,000ft) below the pole.

A Russian official said the "risky and heroic" mission was comparable to "putting a flag on the Moon".

Melting polar ice has led to competing claims over access to Arctic resources.

Russia's claim to a vast swathe of territory in the Arctic, thought to contain oil, gas and mineral reserves, has been challenged by other powers, including the US.

Still going to be fun getting the stuff out from over 4 miles down.

From what I have heard it is more expensive to get the oil onto land than what the oil actually is worth.

As if Russia does not have other problems than that.  Smile

Add "yet", and you have a point. But then, it's not that they want to start drilling tomorrow. And with oil prices rising, the equation may soon look different.

BBC News: "This isn't the 15th Century," Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay told the CTV channel.

"You can't go around the world and just plant flags and say 'We're claiming this territory'," he said.

I'm not an expert on Canadian foreign ministers.

Was Peter MacKay the same man who planted the Canadian flag on a tiny rock named "Hans Island" between Canada and Greenland last summer?

Sweet!

That means the moon is US territory... by Russian logic.

Screw the oil under the pole. Wait until people realize the unlimited energy potential of being on the other end of a gravity well... like say.. being on the moon. There's no more natural energy than dropping things.

That was our Defence minster Gordon O'Connor. That was after your military put your flag on that island which was after our military set up a weather station or something, after your military did a survey, which was after etc. etc. etc.
Thanks for the rum I think we left some whiskey behind for your guys after we left.
Why dont we just extend the international boarders between the countries up to the north pole then every northern country gets a piece of the pie?

I fail to see why anybody, Russians , Canadians, Americans or anybody else can make a valid claim at all since there is no actual landmass on the north-pole.
International law clearly stipulates a 12Nm limit as to what can be considered "property of any country".
In some cases this 12 mile limit stretches to 200Nm if agreed upon by all parties concerned but because these parts of the polar see have no landmass ,except for a couple of islands, nobody can claim it.
If tomorrow Angola or Nepal or Lichtenstein put a flag down there it is as valid as the Other claims.

This conflict is not unlike the dispute over the Okinotori islands which up until now belong to Japan and therefor they can also claim the fishing and mining rights surrounding these Islands.
As soon as nature decides to sink the islands below sea level (which inevitably will happen) , Japan will loose the claim on the surrounding sea.

This is why I am disappointed that Canada is not getting proper artic battle ships. We need to go in there with a force and set up a defence up north I really dont like the idea of Russia (not that I am against Russia I would feel the same if it where any other country) going around our territory unchecked, Steven Harper, I know you have spent money on defence but you need to spend more now!

Looks good to me. The US gets a nice slice all the way to the north pole.

And since our flag is currently flying over the south pole we should just go ahead and claim that as well...

Big version: Width: 912 Height: 608 File size: 115kb
51st State of America!

And, as mentioned before our flag is also on the moon:

Big version: Width: 300 Height: 360 File size: 316kb
52nd State of America

Between our slices of the Arctic, the South Pole (Antarctic) , and the Moon, the US is doin' allright...

The Arctic Sea outside economic zones belongs as much to Switzerland and Egypt as it belongs to Russia and Canada etc.

With your logic for instance Portugal could claim how much of the Atlantic Ocean?

Guys, you are twisting the issue. We are not making sovreignty claims to the north pole at all. We are claiming it as the economic zone (which has nothing to do with the 12nm state sovreignty). We base this argument on the fact that the Lomonov Ridge is part of the Eurasian continental plate and extends over from Siberia. Which would make the issue valid but has not been proven yet, which is the second issue why the submersibles are there.
From the BBC article:

Quote:

Current laws grant countries an economic zone of 200 nautical miles beyond their land borders.

This zone can be extended where a country can prove that the structure of the continental shelf is similar to the geological structure within its territory.

That logic would make the Mid Atlantic Ridge belong to Iceland.

I'm not an expert on international law. But maybe we should say: "Go Iceland! You already have a flag. Go and build a submarine".

Or maybe not. The Mid Atlantic Ridge will forever be as much Russian as Icelandic - or Australian for that matter.
