Mac OS 10.5 Goes Unix 03

Thu Aug 02, 2007 11:53 pm

Congratulations to the whole OS X dev team, and Apple for achieving UNIX 03 certification for 10.5 (Leopard).

"Apple's forthcoming release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is the first BSD-based operating system to receive the UNIX 03 certification, placing the Mac maker among an elite group of official UNIX 03 vendors."

Note: This is in the wrong forum.

This is great news from an enterprise standpoint. Any application that uses the UNIX03 API will run with little source code modification. It's also a great feel-good move for CIOs.

This is excellent news from a development standpoint too. Well done Apple!

Yeah, I'm sorry for some reason, I must have posted it in the Civil Aviation forum. Not my intention. Oops.

One thing to note: The certification has only been requested for the Intel version of Leopard.

I guess it doesn't hurt to have yet another incentive for people to switch over from older PowerPC machines like my G5 PowerMac...  mischievous

Fortunately the previous version Tiger is already compatible enough that it's not a problem developing on MacOS X for other Unix variants - including those which aren't certified Unixes either, such as Linux.

Although I don't know jack about computers, I know this is a pretty big milestone for them. Well done.
