The Official StepneyGate Thread.

Sun Aug 05, 2007 9:29 am

I'd like to offer the means to post in one place, all discussion regarding the McLaren - Ferrari document "StepneyGate" fiasco.

I think the Hungarian GP thread and the threads that will be started on the remainder of the F1 races this season will be a lot cleaner and easier to read without that distraction and clutter. It is, after all, very much a side story and certainly worth its own thread.

Anyone want to kick off by posting a link to a concise summation of the story to date?

Ok well in a nutshell

Former Ferrari engineer Nigel Stepney is rumored to have approached McLaren Cheif Designer, Mike Coughlan, about forming a technical team and approaching another team. Honda was approached but declined their services. During a meeting between Stepney and Coughlan, Stepney provided Coughlan with a package of Ferrari designs. Coughlan claims he accepted these out of 'engineering curiosity' and that they were never shown to anyone else at McLaren. As soon as McLaren became aware that Couglan held these documents he was suspended by the team. McLaren were brought to the World Motorsport Council on a charge of being in breach of article 151c of the International Sporting Code. Illegally possessing the intellectual property of another team. Which they were found guilty, but no penalty was applied as the WMSC could not conclusively prove that any of the Ferrari designs had influenced the McLaren design. The case has been referred to the International Court of Appeal.

Coughlan and Stepneys homes have been raided and documents seized. Both have pending civil action brought on by Ferrari.

Many things don't add up. The time line of events for one. Renault are claiming that McLarens pace and understanding of the Bridgestone tyres so quickly has been aided by them knowing about the balance and how the tyres worked. This makes no sense if the documents were exchanged in April as has been confimed in Ron Dennis letter to Luigi Macaluso. Stepney is denying everything, even when things come out in his favor, such as McLaren saying he was whistle blowing about Ferrari using illegal components on its cars. Coughlan hasn't said anything.

I've probably missed heaps of things, but you get the gist of it right? Do a search in google and heaps of news links will probably come up.
