Doesn't matter, 760* will be broken by A-Rod within 5 years so we don't have to vote in this sad excuse of a human being into the hall of fame.

(760* = my guess of # of HRs by year's end)

I do not support his alleged steroid use, but it's still a great milestone. No matter how doped a player is, hitting a home run off a Major League pitcher is no easy feat! Several years ago USA Today had a series on the 10 most difficult things to do in the sports field, and hitting a pitch from a Major League pitcher took the top spot!

While the homerun itself was nice (I got to watch it on TV as well), the fact that Barroid Bonds tied with Hank Aaron was disturbing at best.

It's times like these when I'm glad I'm a Phillies fan--the most loserly team in all of professional sports. Hooray for 10k!

See, we don't have to get wrapped up in when "real" or "good" baseball ended--it never really even [b]began[/i] for us! We don't get wrapped up in positive records (like most career home runs...or even, say, drug test results  wink  ) when we can bet on how many call ups from the farm teams we'll need because of however many injuries we sustain.

Yes, the life of the Phillies fan is a bleak one, but hey! at least we won't have to worry about any nasty asterisks floating around us any time soon, right? Put that one in the Win column--nobody'll notice...

(my 'rhetorical question' below is not directed at you, but at anyone who thinks this record is worth anything)

So if I'm a golfer, and they suddenly came up with a pill that would allow me to nail more hole-in-ones than the average person could, should I end up in 'the record books' for having hit sunk the most hole-in-ones??

The thing about this record is that it's actually making Hank Aaron's effort look like a sham (even though it's truly a remarkable accomplishment on his behalf), and the fact that in every major history book, there will be an asterisk beside Bonds' name indicating the alleged use of steroids.

The thing is -- it's truly sad.. when you have children who look up to this man as a positive influence, when really all he MAY have proven is that the more certain chemicals you take, the more fake your accomplishment can be.

Boy, oh boy! Now THAT'S something to be proud of. A baseball player stupid enough to allow himself to become the subject of doubt. That's too bad. And to think. The poor bastard could have probably done it just by drinking two cups of coffee every morning.

What a stupid idiot Mr Bonds is. As long as there's doubt, he doesn't deserve a damned thing. Not even an asterisk.

Now I'm sure all of the steroid experts (total sarcasm) will come after me, but I say he is the man. If he is proven guilty IN COURT I will lose tremendous respect for him; but until that point...Go Barry!

Actually, no. "Innocent until proven guilty" is a cliche we teach to school kids, something that's said to appease people, and something to make folks feel all warm and fuzzy inside. My experiences in this "great" world have proved opposite. You're guilty until proven innocent. And even if proven innocent, you're actually guilty as long as the public doubts that justice was served (See O.J. Simpson). I'm surprised you don't know that by now.

Again in Bond's defense, he could have gained that much muscle. It is possible; not likely but possible.

In one particular year, eating right and working out like a mad dog I gained 15lbs of muscle. So again it's possible he put on more size/weight. To play the field even I was 20 years old and Bond's is 42+ years old; so it is unlikely, again.

Yes, you do. And I'm not one of your 90%. Bonds took steroids. No doubt in my mind. But none of you were bitching when he nailed 72 in a season. Hell, no one bitched when Sosa and McGuire had their chase in '98. Those three players saved MLB as we know it today. Think about that. The numbers in attendance were down, the TV time dedicated was down. The cash intake for the sport was down. Steroids, and horrible as they are, turned the sport around. Well, maybe more turned it down a different path, which is now being cleaned up. However, the cash flowed in because of this turn, and MLB was much more prosperous. There are two reasons you people are bitching now.

1. He lied to the investigators about his steroid use.

2. He's breaking THE biggest record in sports history, and since people are irked at him anyway, they will do/say anything to bring him down.

It takes a helluva lot more then just shear muscle to hit a ball out of the park people. Remember that...

Those pictures were taken somewhere around 14 years apart from one-another, it would be a bit strange if he didn't appear any different eh gasp  ...He's gotten fatter as he's gotten older so thats why he looks more bulky. I'm not saying he's innocent, but you can't convict him by just looking at him.

Anyways, I was actually watching the game live on TV when he hit 755, so I thought that was pretty cool to see.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

I guess it was cool to have him do it here in San Diego, watching it live on local tv. Even though I'm a native San Diegan, I think that the crowd showed a lot of class in giving Barry a standing ovation.

The ESPN broadcast was blacked out here, so I don't know if they did any story about the guy who caught the ball. The local Padres station had a few commentators out in the stands, and they interviewed some people who were right next to where the ball landed. I guess the guy who caught it was there with his cousin, and his mother gave him the tickets a few days prior. Security apparently escorted the guy who caught the home run ball's cousin out to make it seem like he was the one who caught the ball. After a while, the real guy who caught the ball walked out without too much interest because everyone thought his cousin was the one who caught the ball.  laughing  Freaking James Bond crap.

Congrats to Barry.

A couple of things conveniently forgotten.

Ever seen some before and after pics of Hank Aaron? he gained quite a bit of weight too in his later years. Whatta y'all think he was on?

Guys on steriods lose a LOT of weight when they get off the juice. That hasn't happened here, why is that, or do you all think he's still on it?

If Bonds played in the same parks Aaron played in, he'd have passed this record years ago.

I'm pretty neutral/wait-and-see on the place of Barry in history....but thats just plain wrong. Yes, Barry is 43 while Hank was 42 when he reached 755. However, Bonds has done it in MUCH less time....around 2,500 less at-bats. This isn't even accounting for the thousand or so more walks for Bonds. Bottom line is that Barry has been quicker to 755. Theres no denying that.

I fail to see how this can be considered selfish. He's played more games in a row than he has in awhile, Bochy had planned on sitting him on Saturday. Its definitely the consensus within the organization and Giants fan base that 756 should happen in SF if at all possible. Sitting him on Sunday makes perfect sense.

He's retiring after this year. He's a washed up cow, and the only reason he's still playing is for this record.

However, I think that he is a great player.

However, I think that he is an asshole.

I have to admit that I did enjoy the footage. I have met Bud Selig on more occasions than I can count and he looked truly uncomfortable during the whole thing. I like that. May he rot in hell. He is a greedy and selfish man. Question that if you would like. In my past business life, I have seen him act like an ignorant, selfish, little child. I suppose either way he will rot in hell. At least Barry will have company.

I still think that Bonds should be allowed to get 756 in the following fashion - ground ball, and NO ONE FIELDS IT. Everyone on the opposing team stands with their arms crossed as he has to hoof it around the bases for an inside-the-park HR.

Puts an even bigger asterisk on number 756, if you ask me.

Bonds is too smart no one will ever know if he took anything.

Wow, I didn't know Bonds put out his own brand of Kool-Aid.

A serious question in regards to McGuire though - can you get that big from Andro alone?

I just missed seeing live Bonds getting his 755th career HR. I did notice in the rest of game, ESPN2 discussed the steroid accusations history and related issues even more than of Bonds breaking the record, showing replays of it. It seems to me that there was a lot less excitement and attention in the stadium and in the rest of the media of Bonds breaking Aaron's record then when Aaron broke Ruth's HR career record.
Beyond the steroid accusations Bonds faces, to me other factors make a difference between the acceptance of Aaron's total HR career record vs. that of Bonds. When Aaron broke Ruth's long sacred record, he faced obscene amounts of racist hate mail and so on when he did so. I don't deny some racism may play as to Bonds, but it a fraction of what Arron faced. Aaron also lived over 30 years of his life in the deeply and legally segregated South, was delayed in entering MLB due to race (playing in Negro league teams for several years with excellent performance), something Bonds never really faced. I would also note that Bonds grew up to be a baseball player, his father was a MLB contemporary of Aaron and his 'godfather' is Willie Mays, one of the great players of all time. There is also a difference in personality. Bonds is far for arrogant and selfish in his public behaviour, a common problem with many players today.
Let us also not forget too that Bonds had only been accused in public opinion with circumstantial evidence, never in a court of law, and has the right to his 5th Amendment rights of not accusing himself of crimes. He has yet to face any court of law, face an incitement, or have any possible testimony to a grand jury become public (which it can't).

Coming from law enforcement...Wow....Innocent till proven guilty..No?

You convenient forget that this isn't a court of law. It's the court of public opinion, and in this court, there never has been an "innocent until proven guilty" standard.

Im' so happy for him! One more to go and he owns the record. I wish I could catch on to 766 and hold it for about 10 years lol.

It wouldn't be worth very much in about ten years, since A Rod will hopefully pass Baroid and relegate him to the dustbin.

Now that is an excellent idea!

I have no complaints about him hitting 756 in San Fran but the fact that he worrys only about HIMSELF and HIS records instead of the team actually going somewhere, that is selfish.
