Politically Correct Job Titles You've Heard

Tue Aug 07, 2007 3:03 am

Hey all,

The other day, I heard probably the most ridiculous PC job title I've ever heard. It was a receptionist position, but instead of receptionist it was called "Director of First Impressions"  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure  Yeah sure

Another bad one is "Sanitation engineer" for garbage men. What exactly are they engineering? I'd say the guy who designed the sewer system for the whole city is the real "Sanitation engineer". Not some guy heaving bags into a truck.

If you've heard some other bad ones, please list them in this thread!

Haha, my job title falls into this category. The official title is "Hospitality Coordinator", but really, I'm a seater/greeter/cashier at a restaurant.

I've heard "Vertical Transportation Specialist" for elevator operators.

Nah I'm not really offended...I mean, I'm an engineer yes, but I don't have advanced degrees that I went to school for tons and tons of years for. My cousin does, however (well, a Masters and working on a Doctorate), and he doesn't care. As long as they don't take his job so he has money to drink, he's fine...so am I  Wink

That's "Putzfrau" in German, and the official term is "Raumpflegerin" or "room caretaker" in English. Trouble is that the German word "Pflegerin" also basically refers to nurses.

It applies more to domestic nurses as fare as women are concerned. In the case of male nurses it's "Krankenpfleger" and a "cleaning gentleman" would be a "Raumpfleger".

Actually, I think the official term for "nurse" has changed as well, to "Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger(in)".

And a "Pfleger" also means male nurse. My father worked as one before doing his training to become an EMT (which he couldn't finish after getting permanently disabled because of a heart condition). It paid the rent, so no complaints about the job. No idea how it is now.

In Sweden we have the "room caretaker" for cleaning lady, but since that has lost its glossy appearance, the term "hygiene technician" has come into use.

Yea, my dad used to tell people he was "A representative in product distribution for the Mobil Oil Company" and people used to go "Oh, really?" and he would say "Yeup, I pump gas for $2/hr". (this being back in the mid 70's while he was in college on Long Island).

I have always thought that it sounded better to be a "secretary" than the PC title now used, "administrative assistant." At least "secretary" infers that it has to do with written communications and specific skills and such; admin assistant sounds like you're a gopher.

Here in Tucson, Sun Tran (our local transit operator) refers to bus drivers as "coach operators." I don't really care what they call it as long as whomever is driving the bus is capable of doing so without pummeling the riders or endangering anyone else. Actually, most of their drivers are pretty good by comparison to other cities.

It would probably be more appropiate for someone who actually drives a coach (e.g. a Greyhound bus, or Ticabus buses). For me, a coach operator doesn't sound that PC, but it shouldn't be used on those who drive urban buses, only those who actually drive a coach around from city to city, state to state, country to country.

Yes, this is a legitimate job title. Construction Engineers have the same education and certifications as the Design Engineers in the office, but they work out of an office on the job site, usually a trailer. They are responsible for re-designs when the blueprints do not match field conditions, and they resolve construction related problems. They may also manage the construction process and perform field inspections and testing. On complex projects, the job of a Construction Engineer may require a greater level of skill and knowledge than the guys in the office.

i'm not sure how you know that this woman's husband is not an engineer working in the construction industry, doing things like site audits, project management, etc? I graduated with many engineers that have gone on this route. I think the point of this thread is about the fact that we know some are not real, and are clearly overstating their positions.
