Heading For Port

Thu Aug 09, 2007 5:07 am

I guess most of us interested in this fine wine from the Douro Valley know it's history and applications, but for the novices out there I have assembled a couple of "must know" words that you have to know the meaning of

Porthole: Facial aperture through which you drink port

Report: Another bottle

Portmanteau: A large case or trunk designed for carrying port

Import: What you do when you pour port through a porthole

Export: It should never happen

Harbour: An odd kind of port

Free port: No such thing

Deport: To have a bottle forcibly removed

Porter: One who always carries a bottle of port

Portable: Capable of being made into port. Refers to the grape varieties used, which are obscure and difficult to pronounce, such as Tinto Cao, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Maurisca, Satisfied?

Portend: The last glass in a bottle

Portfolio: A piece of paper listing all the ports you have drunk

Portion: My half of the bottle

Portly: Stout -a completely different kind of drink

Portrait: A picture of a bottle

Portray: What the butler uses to carry the decanter

Sport: A game for two people and a bottle

Those are all I can think of at the moment, maybe somebody out there has any others?  drunk

Kieron747, my thoughts exactly. Could someone tell me if these definitions are related to wine or the dictionary?

Methinks they are someone's *comedy* ideas whilst reading the dictionary... after consuming several bottles of said wine.

Not a bif fan of Port myself... Whisky, now that's a different story.
