Why Do People Get Kicks Out Of Arson?

Sat Aug 11, 2007 2:51 am

Why do people really get kicks out of setting things alight?

I ask this because we have had the problem this morning, because somebody set our pile of scrap tyres (300-350 tyres) at our garage in Stafford (Staffordshire), and we found out later in the day that somebody (possible the same person) set another set of scrap tyres at a Garage in Stafford, as well as a garage which had six motorbikes in and a car alight (also in Stafford), in the space of a couple of hours (we were targeted at 4 in the morning).

And on the Tuesday somebody (could be the same person as this morning) set fire to a pile of scrap tyres at another garage down the road from us.

Silly me, I always thought that was landing gear hanging down.  Embarrassment

Anyway, I guess it gives them a means to destroy things without much physical effort.
I lift things up and put them down.

Actual, psychologists will tell you that arsonists get a sexual thrill from setting fires. Most arsonists will stay and watch the fires they cause. When investigating arson police will take pictures of the crowd. They then compare these photos to see if there is anyone who seems to always show up at a fire. Arsonists also get a kick out of all the commotion they cause. They like to watch the fire trucks and will sometimes be the one who calls the fire in. Another scary thing to think of is that more then a few fire fighters have turned up to arsonists.

Some, not all. Arson could also be motived by money (i.e. to collect insurance) or to cover up another crime.

Before or after becoming firefighters?

"Guys! We're supposed to put them out!"

- Steve Martin as fire chief C.D. Bales in Roxanne

Actually it should not be surprising. Apart from the basic conflict of doing something illegal, it makes sense that a guy who really likes watching fires would find a profession that gets him to every fire in the neighborhood. Guy who likes airplanes gets into aviation, guy who likes fire becomes firefighter. (where do we get proctologists?)

Fires and explosions are fun to watch. More people turn out to watch a building come down than go up. However, this:

...is just freaky.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

When I was watching the CCTV of the incident on our cameras a person walks past our camera 20 odd minutes after the fire was started and then walks away and 5-10 minutes later the fire service arrive, and the police watched the video too and think that the person might be the person who started the fire. I'm supprised how close he got to the fire because I have heard that the fire has to be a min temp of 400 degress for the tyres to catch fire, and the fire was large enough it was lighting the place up really good to see lots of movement with the fire service etc (the place is normally pitch black with no lights).
