Just One More Story Of Post-Katrina Pork

Quote:
With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama's football stadium.
About 10 condominium projects are going up in and around Tuscaloosa, and builders are asking up to $1 million for units with granite countertops, king-size bathtubs and 'Bama decor, including crimson couches and Bear Bryant wall art.

While many of the buyers are Crimson Tide alumni or ardent football fans not entitled to any special Katrina-related tax breaks, many others are real estate investors who are purchasing the condos with plans to rent them out.

Roll-Tide!

Why am I not surprised? People bending rules for their advantage, I suspect Congress and President Bush didn't have condos near a football stadium that is no where near the disaster site benefit from this law.

the efforts of Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, who is from Tuscaloosa, graduated from Alabama and sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee. But Shelby aides said Tuscaloosa made the cut because it was classified as a disaster area by the government after Katrina, not because of the senator's influence.

Looks Richard Shelby is bringin' home the pork.

Off topic. My wife (an LSU grad) and her mother (from northeast Lousiana) have an Alabama chant (picture Tide fan holding up his toilet-roll-on-a-stick):....."Roll Tide, roll. Roll Tide, roll. Around the bowl and down the hole; roll Tide, roll"

Giving Ted Stevens a run for his money, isn't he?  wink

You can say that again. So much for fiscal responsibility and cutting government waste.

As a Florida fan, I've heard it many a time.

BTW ask your wife if LSU fans really smell of corndogs.

Of course this particular OP failed to write anything about that.  sarcastic

I am in Tuscaloosa at this very moment and this city doesn't need tax breaks for development.

I love Americans, but when you give the average American alot of money, for some reason they go on a spending spree in the Tacky Clutter Home Furnishing store.  duck

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Are you sure? Take a look at this. It's supposedly a very sensitive issue.

Google "LSU Corndogs" and read what pops up.

I know. Now had it been Senator Kennedy or Clinton, he'd be calling for their head on a platter.

Considering it was originally posted on an Auburn web-site, I'll take it for what it's worth.....zilch.

I do like the comment further down about tailgating at LSU.....it is the best!
