US GAO Head: USA Resembles Fall Of Rome

Tue Aug 14, 2007 2:23 pm

Fair Use excerpt:

"The US government is on a ‘burning platform’ of unsustainable policies and practices with fiscal deficits, chronic healthcare underfunding, immigration and overseas military commitments threatening a crisis if action is not taken soon, the country’s top government inspector has warned.

David Walker, comptroller general of the US, issued the unusually downbeat assessment of his country’s future in a report that lays out what he called “chilling long-term simulations”.

Drawing parallels with the end of the Roman empire, Mr Walker warned there were “striking similarities” between America’s current situation and the factors that brought down Rome..."

I am glad someone is talking about long-range mechanics. Obviously we cannot spend so much on health care. It does not produce anything we can export, other than (of course) health care products.

We are slowly imploding. Either we become sustainable, like Japan and Canada currently are, or we are headed for a financial collapse. We are prosperous but have become sloppy. No matter how rich you are, when you get sloppy you lose it all. Sometimes very fast.

Personally I am more optimistic about our potential, but extremely pessimistic that our politics can save us. Democracy is a young experiment, and it just may occur that dictatorship will prove stronger and more sustainable. Democracy has no check on short-term human greed of the masses. Americans just want to eat, get fat and drink wine just like ancient Romans. We also elect warlords who kill people overseas for nothing (civilians, women, children, as well as "enemy combatants" and "future terrorists").
