Audiophiles I Need Your Help

Fri Aug 17, 2007 8:17 am

Ok so my old sure e2c's finally died after a good year and half of crisp clear quality sound, so i am off to the store to purchase new ones, any suggestions??

I dont want the e2c's again, one reason is a lot of the stores dont carry them anymore because they have been replaced with a 150 dollar pair that i was thinking of.

I DONT WANT BOSE, a friend of mine has them and they suck, they dont have a tight fit, and the quality was no where near my sures. I am looking in the 100-150 dollar price range and I am really only interested in ear buds, being that they are easier to get away with at school

thanks a lot guys

Something isn't adding up here.

Audiophiles don't use ear buds and you really need to pay attention in class.  wave

As much as I am an audiophile, I can't think of any earbud to recommend. That is too new for me.
I like the full large cup on both sides of my head.

I much prefer proper headphones myself, but there are some decent earphones out there. You probably just haven't heard them.  silly

Bless You!! That's half the battle already!  biggrin

There are a ton of options, and at many price points as well. For your budget however, there are three that I'd recommend:

Westone UM1
Ultimate Ears Super.fi pro
Jays d-Jays

The technical term for earphones that go deep in your ear canal like your e-2s is "In-Ear Monitor" or IEM. Earbuds are the style of earphones that come with an iPod; they sort of rest in the opening. The ones that go halfway in are called canalphones. There are good ones to recommend for any style and any price, so let me know if you'd like to change anything. I assumed you wanted the same style of earphones as your e2s, so my list of 3 are all IEMs.

Out of interest, what are you listening to these out of? An iPod? How high-quality are your music files?

hey,
.
IEM are exactly what I want and I dont plan on getting anything less then my e2c. I listen to my laptop at school so the quality varies depending on the source, its only recently i have been getting into download my music via the source and being able to pay the extra buck for the high quality music, But i am a HUGE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND fan, and their music has huge range, and i liked my E2c's becuase it brought the music to life, i heard everynote, pitches on both the lower and higher ends were not cut out, and everytime i listened to a new song i heard something new with such a clean and crisp sound. They never muffled on the lower end or cracked, and o man it just nailed the mids, on the live tracks you can hear the phantom mics in action, and since then when i listen to something with less quality i just shut it off. I even updated my cars sound system and replaced my old bose systems with the newer model speakers..its a mercedes benz, and its almost as good as my bose over ear phones.

Great! Then I stand by my suggestions. Also, any one of them will sound quite a bit better than the e2c.

CDs are the way to go. They're DRM-free, and they sound so much better than any downloaded music, purchased or not. Rip them in a lossless format and enjoy.  Smile

Bose makes decent headphones, don't get me wrong - they're just massively overpriced. If you're referring to the Bose TriPorts (which I've owned myself), they can be bested by pairs costing 1/3 as much. Seriously.

If you ever want to replace them, I'd recommend the Alessandro MS-1 for $100. These are a fine, forward pair of phones great for all sorts of things. Big grin

Anecdotally, anybody reading this within sight of a pair of headphones simply has to download and listen to this track: (don't worry mods, this song has been made freely available by the company that produced it)

http://storage.aerith.nl/Ultrasone/Track01.flac

What's special about this is in the way it's recorded. Made especially for use with headphones, it creates an amazing 3-dimensional soundscape around your head. Just download it folks, you really have to hear it to know what I'm talking about!

If your computer can't play FLAC files, get the free VLC Media Player. Don't be shy, it's a great little program to have and it's only 9 MB so your hard drive won't even notice it.

The Shure E4c are excellent and can be had for as little as $190 on Amazon. I've had a pair for just about a year and a half and I love them. They're excellent to travel with due to their portability and the sound is amazing. The E4c started life as a companion to Shure's line of Personal Monitor Systems so they're legitimate professional gear. If the E4c is too much of a reach you could get the E3c which is the next step up from your old E2c.

I'd also recommend you check out http://www.head-fi.org as they have a very active forum with all kinds of information and opinions.
If you love yourself, go now to western union and send me the sum of $10,000 to save your life.
