Tony Snow Out As White House Press Secretary

Sat Aug 18, 2007 10:41 am

Quote:
WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave before the end of the Bush presidency because he needs to make more money.

"I'm going to stay as long as I can," he said without elaborating on a departure date.

Snow's comment caught White House colleagues by surprise, and they said they could not hazard a guess about when he might leave.

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

Maybe his health is a factor as he is still being treated for cancer. He may figure he wants to make as much money before he possibly dies from his cancer so his family is financially secure, or maybe not all of his medical bills are being paid by insurance. Perhaps too, he may want a less demanding job, one with more flexibility and less hassles than being Bush's Press Secretary. He has been in long enough to get some good leads and contacts he can use if he went back to Fox News.

That's what I thought when I opened this thread. I was surprised when I last saw him on TV his hair were all white.

You kidding?? I wouldn't have said that as much as I disagree with everything he says or everything he is associated with.

He was supposedly making over a half-million a year before coming to the White House - but yes, he needs to think of his family and their possible future without him.

Whether you like the man or not - age 52, three kids - second reoccurrence of cancer.... he's got problems.

Agreed. As long as he has some semblance of health, he can make a lot more for his family on TV or radio. In addtion, it may be a sign that all is not well with his battle with cancer. Hope he keeps the faith, and beats the disease.

Strange he would step down at this time - anyone else recognize how this article shows that (1) Rove is stepping down, as of earlier this week, (2) Hastert will not seek relection, and (3) now Snow is leaving. Who from the Republican side is next?

I will look for a link, but within the past few days, two somewhat senior Republicans are not seeking re-election to the house.

It looks logical from here.

I hope he beats this cancer recurrence.

Tony Snow is number ____ to quit from the White House. Can somebody fill in the number of people lost that GWB has had in his administration? Seems to be like maybe the 20th person now that has quit? Thats got to be a new historical record in the presidency now.

Sad That's too bad. As much as I disagree with him, you gotta respect how he holds his own with the press. He doesn't stray from his convictions. All I can say is that I wish him well, and I'm praying that he will beat his cancer and live a long healthy life with his family.

I think the rate of people leaving the Bush White House has now surpassed the number of people leaving Detroit.

I actually don't think the number of people leaving the White House, and other senior executive branch positions, is very high or beyond normal. This exodus has been common in administrations I've watched since LBJ in 67-68.

Look at the timing - right now there are 17 months left in the Bush presidency.

Being as this is Bush's second term, in 17 months, ALL of them will be out of a job. In 12 months, all of the remaining staff will be looking for a job.

It's quite common for the smartest, best, most influential to leave two years to 18 months before the end of an administration. Their 'value' is much higher with their friends still in place in a lame duck administration than it will be when that administration is gone.

The competition level for the best jobs is much lower right now than it will be in six months. In a year the job market will even worse.

Personally being from Michigan that is kind of depressing, but at the same time; THAT IS HILARIOUS

Hastert and a bunch of other Republicans. Because of their close ties to Bush, they figure they can't win.

"JUMP SHIIIIP!!!!" Lol.  Wink Maybe they can get the dreary Brit Hume to replace him.  sarcastic

On a more serious note, I wish the best for Mr. Snow and his family. Going through cancer can be very tough on family and such. Whilst I disagree with much of his opinions, and what he says, I hope he makes a full recovery and is able to retire and spend a long and happy life with his family.  Smile

I agree. During the runup to the 2000 election, political appointees were leaving my department in droves. We were surprised at that, given that Gore was running. We expected more of them to stick around, but the burrowing in and full flight was intense.

We had an interagency meeting the other day at an off-site location led by an NSC staffer (military detailee) that deals with a fairly nonpartisan recurring issue. Everyone there was a career employee or military. We all agreed on a course of action that called for getting a specific desired action completed by March 08 at the latest, because we know there won't be a snowball's chance in hell we get anyone on the political level to act after that.

If that were true why would they have run this last time? President Bush is not running in the next election, the republican candidate will surely make that clear as often as they can.

Snow is leaving to make as much as he can in case the worst happens. His cancer has spread to his liver which is not a good sign at all. I hope he makes a full and complete recovery and that his cancer is brought into remission but no one can say he isn't taking care of his family.

If I had cancer in my liver I would want to spend as much time with my loved ones as possible. His curent job makes that very difficult.

I wish him well and hope he recovers from his illness.

Somethings are more important than sparing on A.net. Since I knew that thread was nothing but a Bush bash from the beginning why bother?

BTW if you would care to post a link to an AP story that says that Hastert, Hutchison and others are retiring because they feel they can't win their next elections because of an association with President Bush, please feel free.
