Help With Song From The Movie, "Space Camp"

Mon Aug 20, 2007 2:51 am

Bleh, I used to have this song on my computer back in college, but I can't remember what it was.

Have any of you seen the movie, "Space Camp?" Like right at the first of the movie, there is this song this guy is playing in his Jeep when he pulls up to Space Camp in Florida. It starts out with a tune, then the singers start singing, and the last part of the verse is "The Look(book) of Love" something like that. It's been bugging me FOR YEARS because I can't figure out who sings it. It's an 80's song of course. Any help would be appreciated.

It's not listed on the Soundtrack of the movie either.

Yes, and you should be shot for possibly enjoying it.  Wink

As someone who grew up across the river from the Space Center in Florida, lived in Huntsville, AL at that Space Center, and I could go on with our family ties to the space program I can't stand that horrid, stupid, and completely unplausible movie.

I believe you mean "The Look of Love" by ABC.

How in the world did you get "book of love" as possible lyrics?

And who doesn't know "Walk of Life" if they were even remotely alive during the 1980s?

Like I said, as someone who grew up around the space program, had many family members in it, and has been to Space Camp myself I have to say that movie is one of the worst movies of all time because it is so not believable.

You really need professional help if you think that movie is good.  Wink

I wanted to go to Space Camp, and my parents said I could go if I wanted to, don't remember the requirements to get in, but heck, I couldn't even go to summer camp for a week without wanting to come home, so space camp was what, 6-8 weeks? Couldn't phathom that as a child! HA.

Lucky we have your professional analysis of the situation then. For those of us that didn't grow up with a solid rocket booster sticking out of our ass, as children, the film was good.

Well said that man. You and I may not see eye to eye on Bourne vs. Bond, but we agree on the important things in life, like how great a movie Space Camp was/is.  highfive

OMG, I remember that movie so well, and it was on TV a couple of months ago! When that movie came to my attention (not sure when it came out) I remember getting some moving boxes and building my own "spaceship" and I strapped my Tandy 1000EX computer on top of it! HAHA! I liked that movie up until they met the aliens. They were annoying and sort of took out the cool science fiction out of the movie and replaced it with "stupid" comedy. But that bubble thing they created was sooo cool.

Exactly! It was an import part of my life was SpaceCamp. DeltaGator is taking it out of context. We were kids when the film was out, back in a time when the only good think about the 80's were action films and action films aimed at younger audiences: kids films. Indiana Jones, Goonies, Back to the Future etc etc.

All inspired me to become interested in Science, and have had a long lasting effect on my chosen career. I can think of nothing worse than being at school with some kid who was a "know it all" about SpaceCamp, no doubt wearing a SpaceCamp cap and debunking all the myths and fantastical ideas films like SpaceCamp inspired.

I did the same thing from a very young age, even to the extent of including a calculator in my cardboard box mock-up of a space ship (back in the days when I could fit in a box taken from Tesco) to as the calculator was a piece of important kit in the ship. It had buttons, and it had illuminated digits. That damn calculator doubled up as a navigation computer many a Sunday evening!  Wink

I used to draw all the cockpit instruments, with dials, radars and such, and anything that had its own light was included to light up control panels etc. TV remote controls, etc. Wiring from the garage would provide the innards of the contraption, and when on EVA I'd have to perform complex repairs using said wires!  Wink

The fact is that what happens in SpaceCamp is impossible, we all know that, but at the time, if at least for a few days, children can believe that they are in that situation.

And that is priceless.

My kid will watch it I'm sure when he's old enough, and you know what Delta, he'll perhaps enjoy it!  biggrin

Gosh, I did the same thing. Anything that would light up or had buttons went into my cardboard box space ships. I miss the days of being able to fit into cardboard box creations! My most elaborate one, I grabbed two humidifiers, and placed them on the outside and made a duct with some tinfoil and small boxes so the vapor would pour into the space ship. I also set up and "Oxygen circulation system" by cutting out holes on the top, just big enough for the blades of two stand alone fans would fit inside. On one fan, I took off the blades and flipped them over for the reverse exhaust and the other one I just left the same for incoming air. Got out some christmas lights and poked them through holes into the cockpit for my mock-up. That thing ROCKED!! I also had this pocket TV that I strapped inside of the thing, it was my main outside camera. HAHA.

And I agree with you, don't take the fun out of space camp. E.T. was unreal as well, but it inspired many of us, just as Space Camp did.

Why oh why can't we have great action, sciencefiction movies like that anymore? Now all they want to do is gross you out. I mean, come on, Saw I, II, III, and now IV?

Those movies gave us inspiration to dream, and gave us plenty of ideas to keep ourselves entertained.

Lighten up Francis. I'm just giving him a hard time for liking a bad movie. I'm sure I have a few movie skeletons in my closet you could make fun of with me.

Did either of you do this thing with a radio where you selected Short Wave and then tuned it to the highest end of the tuning spectrum your radio would allow? The signal picked up there was a series of crystal clear bleeps and bloops like many science fiction computers from the 70's and 80's. That was a regular part of my cardboard spaceship.

I also remember one particular spaceship I built where my dad helped me cut a 'porthole' in the side and then covered in a blue gel from a disco light. From out of that blue window, I could see the TV. Perhaps that was really the first IFE system I built  Smile Man, that spaceship was excellent!
