Ok, I need a little advice, I just landed a rather good paying job out in Wichita, KS. I think this job will definitely get my foot in the door in terms of civil aeronautical engineering (I currently hold an MS in Mechanical Engineering and a BS in Aerospace Engineering). However, I have a few reservations moving from a place like New York and a place like Kansas. I don't think that mid-western state is known for its progressive nature. I'm particularly concerned about race relations down there. Being a foreign raised black person, I don't want to be subjected to daily salvos of excruciating racial torment (ok, maybe I'm being a little dramatic). But I think that is a big concern for me. I just want to know whether the racial climate would be far worse than what I'm accustomed to.
I've actually visited Wichita last week, and for the most part people seem very friendly and courteous. I'm just concerned that visiting is a lot different than living there.
Other than the racial concerns, I think that Wichita might be the best place for me to start out. The cost of living is low, so I can start saving early and the job I landed is very entry level oriented so I can acquire a skill set in civil aeronautics (engineering) that can make me more competitive in the coming years. I don't intend on living there for long at any rate, maybe a few years at most.
As far as other options, there are none, I'm still waiting on a certain other Washington State manufacturer to give me an offer, but that's looking less and less likely considering it's approaching 4 weeks post interview.
If anyone can give me any info or advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
