Considering Moving To Wichita, KS From New York...

Tue Aug 21, 2007 1:07 pm

Ok, I need a little advice, I just landed a rather good paying job out in Wichita, KS. I think this job will definitely get my foot in the door in terms of civil aeronautical engineering (I currently hold an MS in Mechanical Engineering and a BS in Aerospace Engineering). However, I have a few reservations moving from a place like New York and a place like Kansas. I don't think that mid-western state is known for its progressive nature. I'm particularly concerned about race relations down there. Being a foreign raised black person, I don't want to be subjected to daily salvos of excruciating racial torment (ok, maybe I'm being a little dramatic). But I think that is a big concern for me. I just want to know whether the racial climate would be far worse than what I'm accustomed to.

I've actually visited Wichita last week, and for the most part people seem very friendly and courteous. I'm just concerned that visiting is a lot different than living there.

Other than the racial concerns, I think that Wichita might be the best place for me to start out. The cost of living is low, so I can start saving early and the job I landed is very entry level oriented so I can acquire a skill set in civil aeronautics (engineering) that can make me more competitive in the coming years. I don't intend on living there for long at any rate, maybe a few years at most.

As far as other options, there are none, I'm still waiting on a certain other Washington State manufacturer to give me an offer, but that's looking less and less likely considering it's approaching 4 weeks post interview.

If anyone can give me any info or advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Don't be scared of the midwest.

You might actually like it.

I moved to Iowa from Los Angeles in 1993 and I haven't wanted to go back ever, even in winter. Of course I'm a cracker so I might have had things slightly easier but there you go. You can't waste time worrying about how people you don't even know exist fucked you over. That's a fool's game.

I mean, all black folks have heard the n word and they know there are people around that don't like them much, right? Just like us white folks know that there are parts of town we don't set foot in lest our asses get kicked good and hearty for similar reasons.

My sense of it is that you can find racial animosity wherever you set foot on this planet, if you look for it.

At most, folks might think you're a little exotic although that is not necessarily a bad thing. It all depends on what circles you travel in. I see you're from Buffalo-that's not exactly high culture central, my son's from there.

best of luck on your new job, if that is what you end up doing.

Well, here are 2 experiences:

First, I'm not black, but I lived in Kansas for 10 years and never knew anyone to be racist.

Second, I have a good friend (white) who moved with her black boyfriend from ATL to Kansas. They ended up breaking up and she moved back to ATL, but HE liked living in Kansas so much that he chose to stay and is still there after 10 years (they still keep in touch).

So no, the racial climate will not be worse and will likely be better than what you are used to.

Congrats on the job offer and I am sure you will do very well no matter where you move to. A lot of Coastal people (NYC, BOS, LA & SF) think that all of the midwest is like the south when it is not. However Kansas is more like the south than Upper Midwest where I originally come from. Not sure what the race relations are like in Wichita, Kansas but it is certainly a Christian fundamentalist haven. Not sure if you're a devout Christian or not.
Culturally it will be lacking compared to New York city.

Make the best of where ever you move.

That's all a matter of opinion I suppose....there are cultural attractions in NYC that I'm so not interested in, and I grew up in sight of the trade towers.

Point of information, although I hate what happened there (and to the people inside them) with every ounce of gusto I can muster, I'm not sorry they're gone. They spoiled the skyline and they were ugly. Let's hope that what replaces them looks better.

I remember a conversation I had once with a boyfriend from NYC:

Him: "New York is great. There are hundreds of theatres there."

Me: "How often did you go to the theatre?"

Him: "Oh, I never went. It was just nice knowing it was there."

Sounds like he didn't want to tell you what he really likes about New York.  Wink
