The England Vs. Germany Wembley Thread

Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:21 pm

Tonight Germany is a guest in the new Wembley stadium in England.

There are test games, there are friendship-games, and there is Germany - England...

I think this is worth enough discussion in a thread.

My guess is: ENG - GER 0 : 3  Wink

Next thing you know, the limeys will be trotting out 1966.

Is it true Germany is going in sans Klose, Ballack, Frings, Podolski, and Friedrich?

it was reported in a newspaper during a past world cup, that if england are playing 1966 will be mentioned within the first 10 minutes. If england are not playing 1966 will be mentioned at some point before half time.

Correct, and you can add Schweinsteiger and Gomez to that list as well.

Now, I normally would of course be rooting for a victory by Germany, but when I look at the list of talent missing, and the fact that Lehmann has made two embarrassing mistakes in his 2 recent games for Arsenal, I'm certainly not too confident.

It's an exhibition match. Who gives a shit?

At the end of the day, England will lose. Not because they have some of their best players out through various injuries (Gerrard, Hargreaves for example), but because of two main reasons:

1. Frank Lampard will be playing, and I have yet to see any sign of him being able to turn it on in an International game. I admire him as a domestic player, but he's hopeless on the international stage. Unfortunately, he'll be given one of the more active roles in midfield, one which can often dictate the flow of the rest of the team.

2. More importantly, we still have the clown McLaren still in charge. With him at the helm, we'll never win anything more than a pat on the back from San Marino's part timers after we beat them by a mere 3-0 (when most teams manage to put 10 or more past them).

R.I.P. England football.

My suggestion: keep things optimistic. England isn't really in top shape either after losing Hargreaves and Rooney to injuries. Plus Beckham, while he's starting to show his skills in the MLS, isn't exactly in top shape either. Yes, we have a problem in the Creative Centre and the Striker positions, but I'm still confident that this is a challenge we can win. Keep the faith in our team, who's going to give us another Sommermärchen in Austria and Switzerland next year. Big grin

Ah yes. The eternal weakness of England's penalty kickers. That alone makes England an embarassment to football.  Wink  duck

England vs Germany is not any exhibition match. It's one of the biggest football classics in the world and even if it is considered only an exhibition match, those two teams will play as if they were in the World Cup final, guaranteed.  Wink

What pisses me off the most about England is that they have this idiot John Terry as captain. The only player who can really be the captain is Steven Gerrard, but I presume he won't play. Gerrard at least knows something of leadership, while Terry is just another Chelski who may only know few things about leading his squad from the locker rooms thanks to José Mourinho.

England should hire Klinsmann as manager and then challenge us to a match at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund (Germany's own football temple). Then again, Klinsmann may prefer to re-start his coaching career at Tottenham Hotspur, so England can forget about finally getting a world class manager for the senior team.  stirthepot

My feeling is that Germany will win this game 2:0.  bigthumbsup

Yes, apparently Germany is wearing the reds today to intimidate the opposing team. At least that was the reason why Klinsmann wanted the away uniform to have red instead of either black, grey, or green. Since red is not only part of our tricolour flag, but also the colour of love and passion, I guess it does make perfect sense.  Wink

No, worse: he scored. Now McLaren will keep playing him even when Gerrard comes back. I think the key is not to have Lampard and Gerrard both playing. That is a disaster; they just don't cooperate. Then again, in the last World Cup it didn't matter who was in midfeld anyway since Ferdinand and Robinson kept sending ridiculous long balls forward so they were giving away possession instead of actually using the midfield...

I'm surprised they even swapped Robinson with James. Even with all of his errors (remember the botched kick during that Croatia game), they never substituted him.

Well, we lost, I'll admit it, I supported them and had a slight hope we'd win, and we played okay, it wasn't a walk over, but it wasn't too unexpected, I mean, the managers now say 'We're going in hoping to win'........well..........call me stupid...........but shouldn't that be the aim.........................like,.............the WHOLE time ?....not just some sort of one off special occasion, but you know, maybe I'm just behind, maybe times have changed and we only go out to win when we want to....

Oh wait......................

Add a 9 after the 1 and a 4 before the 5 and you also get another key number in British History...involving the Germans ofcourse...But seriously, the Germans did deserve the win, after the first goal, we just seemed to slip into a hole although we had good chances here and there.

As to quote an old English program on many years ago.... 'I mentioned the war once but I think I got away with it' ?

Not a bad game. Even the English team could have won it. Maybe... They definately need a proper goalie.

Now the BBC has to dig out all those old glorious war movies in order to forget the newest victory of a German team. Wink

And all continues to be right with the world. I really thought England would win this one, seeing as how the match was held in their capital city, in their brand new stadium, and Germany was bringing their "C" squad. I guess it's time the world got familiar with Mr. Christian Pander. I despise Schalke, but I've been watching him with interest for a while.

But if there is one field where Germany never will get on par with the English, it is commentators. Incompetent, blind, stupid, and no emotions... I want the commentator from 54, or even Rubenbauer... At least they are patriotic.

John Motson  sarcastic

Such an idiot. He just can't help himself, every single time England line up against Germany, he has to trot it out, for God's sake. I wasn't born, I don't give a stuff. I can well imagine the irritation of the Scots, because it also irritates the English. When England played Argentina in a friendly before the World Cup (admittedly, a cracking friendly, when both sides played full on) he got pathetically confused and thought it was a World Cup match. Time to pension him off, the senile old fool.

As for the game, well, yes it was a friendly, both sides had half a dozen first choice players out or patently unfit and so doesn't matter. but I'm not sure I could foresee a different result had it been a competitive match. England are totally inept at the moment.

They could have given the game to Beckmann... So it was not THAT bad again.

But if there is one field where Germany never will get on par with the English, it is commentators. Incompetent, blind, stupid, and no emotions... I want the commentator from 54, or even Rubenbauer... At least they are patriotic.

I don't care that much about patriotism, but for a change someone with a clue about football, just a little bitty tiny one would be lovely, this Simon was bad during WC 2006, got much worse during Cup Final 2007 and yesterday, just when you thought it couldn't get worse.....THIS!!

To our English friends: For Chrissakes, arrest the guy for desecrating football or don't let him out of Heathrow because his IQ is too low or run him over in the street if nothing else helps!! That would be much more appreciated than thanking us for WC 2006!

Couldn't have said it better myself, thanks pal! Big grin
