I don't think any of the guys in T Rex will be outrunning Beckham, as old and busted and washed up as he is, any time soon.

I'd consider changing my choice for best late night show host - Craig Ferguson is hilarious. Watching him now.  rotfl

I'm reasonably certain this has been known by paleontologists for quite some time (that T-Rex wasn't a lumbering beast...not that it could outrun David Beckham). Must be a slow news day...although I suppose the media can count on the public not to remember dinosaur-related news items!

Actually, if I recall they assembled the skeliton of the T-rex wrong and it was actually a scavenger... with that said, the Allosaurous which was to the best of my knowledge assembled properly would have been the *true* T-rex-- it also had three claws instead of two, which would give it better dexterity.

Even if they factored the new findings about the T-rex... 18-mph isn't the fastest professional athletes can achieve. Even the worlds fastest woman (Florence Griffith-Joyner) achieved around 23 to 24mph during 100m sprints. And there was a football player (NCAA) who could run 100 in 10.74, which would amount to around 21-22 mph IIRC.

Not just that... they calculated the minimum muscle mass required for leg movement to compute these figures -- they could have been faster, in other words.

Do they actually pay people to do this kind of research?

Of all the people for comparision, why choose Beckham? He runs about as fast as my grandmother! He's got abilities, but pace has never been one of them!

Vick would probably prefer to lock up T-Rex in his backyard and have it fight other T-Rex' for money  Wink .

Michael Vick has T-rex in a pit in his back yard and is prepping him for a fight against Stephon Marbury's Velociraptor.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

Because CNN, like much of the American media, from time to time feels compelled to make a big deal about soccer and how we Americans are philistines for not adoring it as the rest of the world does.

Now if they'd had an animation of a T-Rex running down and eating Beckham, that'd have been cool. And then having Posh for dessert...although the poor thing might choke on her implants.

...which wouldn't be much of a fight, considering that a real Velociraptor was about the size of a chicken.

More like a turkey as far as I'm aware... and due to its longer legs probably quite a bit taller than that at comparable mass. Still not a turkey I'd love to bump into if I had a choice. Big grin

Analyzing the probable speed of extinct species is a perfectly valid research subject... slapping a popular comparison on the result is just a flourish to gain more attention for the publication. And it obviously worked perfectly!

1) no mention was made of mass, only size.
2) the comparison is straight out of Bakker's mouth, not mine.
