One Of The Planes I Flew Last Month Just Crashed!

Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:56 pm

Sorry that it's not in civil aviation forum but I thought it was too small of a news to post it there.
It's an important news to me though, as I got my PPL from this school less than a month ago. I even flew the exact plane that crashed a few days ago.. wow it's really weird to think about!

It seems as it was a pilot error, but it's still scary to think about! The condition of the student pilot is still critical at this stage. I'll be praying for him!

Registration was: N550XL

There's a video too if anyone's interested.

The aircraft you flown on was a Liberty XL-2 fix wing single engine 2 seat, built in 2006.

N550XL c/n 0039.

Thanks! Where did you find all that info? I knew the model name and registration but not the year of construction and the c/n number.

I also flew a number of other planes, same model, different registration. It's in my logbook but I won't bother you with the registrations of those.

Agreed, sort of like when I saw that the Pan Am plane that went down in Lockerbie was Maiden of the sea's - The very same plane I had travelled on to the US two years before...

Very tragic news regarding the above crash - With 60% burns his chances are not good.

Probably from here, the FAA's registration inquiry/database website.

That's what I was thinking too  Sad
I read on a danish forum from students still at the school that the school has not been nice to him, and that other students called his family for him, not the administration at the school. As a consequence of this whole episode, one of the instructors has chosen to quit and several students left the school without their certificates as they didn't want to continue at the school because of their way of handling this case.

I've flown on N334AA twice from BOS-DFW on the old flight 947, which continued to LIM from DFW back in my college days, when I was attending Boston University. The Business class was sold as economy for Gold/Platinum members, and I was Gold. I remember sitting in my seat and seeing a tear in the carpet right underneat my feet.

I meantion the tear because it is something specific I remember about that aircraft, thus, it gives me some sort of individuality about the plane itself. I still can't believe it crashed into the WTC.

That same aircraft had engine problems on the same flight, the right engine was leaking some sort of fluid and we had to return to the gate in BOS for mx to repair it.

I know of at least 4 aircraft in my logbook that have been crashed.... luckily, none of the crashes resulted in fatalities. I agree, it is definitely weird to think about.

Unfortunately, the crashing of general aviation aircraft is quite common, especially those involved in flight training.

The first PA-28 (N155ND, ex UND) I flew here was involved in a runway excursion a couple of weeks ago - the student is OK, though we don't know if the aircraft will fly again!

I flew on Clipper Maid of the Seas too. Tragic what happened to her and all aboard later.

At last count, roughly 165 different N#s.

Looking through the list, I think my count of crashed aircraft is at least 6 now.

It is potentially an unsettling thought. You can easily picture yourself in that airplane during those final moments.

First time it happened to me was in Army flight training. There was a midair collision out at the airfield. Turned out it killed my room mate and one other friend. I had flown both airplanes, one of them just a day or two before.

After I left Vietnam one of our planes there went down due to a fuel selector failing in a between-tanks position. The crew was rescued but the Vietcong shot the airplane to bits. Another was involved in a midair that killed everyone aboard both aircraft.

If you continue to fly, it goes on. Since then, these and others have totaled eleven airplanes and over two hundred fatalities that I know of. Two of them were very widely known crashes - you've heard of them. Very likely there are some I don't know about. One plane I used to fly has crashed twice that I know of. It is still flying in a fairly high risk environment. It could happen again.

I know the feeling, two days after I flew N67421 at SNA it went down, pilot should have gone around...

That is one of two accidents I always worried about at SNA. (The other being a midair near the shoreline while complying with the noise abatement procedure.)

When holding short of 19 left or right my jet blast was always a worry for me. Many times I was holding short of 19L and tower would clear me across and to "expedite crossing." Well, I have to sit there at idle thrust so there is no way to expedite, the engines take some time to spool up. The clearance only encourages jets to use more thrust in an effort to get moving quickly.

I blame airport management in large part. When they extended the cleared area to the north in about 1987-88 they missed a great opportunity. For another million dollars or so they could have undergrounded I-405 at that point and gained another 2400' or so of runway/stopway, all the way to Main Street. Then they could have built a taxiway to 19R for the jets to use that would have crossed the 19L extended centerline some two thousand feet away from the threshold. Then they could have displaced the threshold of 19R back to about 1500' north of where it is now and improved safety and noise abatement.

Instead they built a giant statue of the worst noise complainer. His boots alone are taller than Dr. Ruth. There's money well spent.

Happened to me also..
one of the planes i regularly flew (C152 -flight school requests I don't release the reg) crashed on landing because the pilot tried landing with 40' flaps and then attempted a go around but it wouldn't climb and he ended up flying it all the way down the runway, over a hedge and crashing in the next field. The pilot walked away with a broken nose and bruised ribs.

It's such an eerie feeling! That Chalks Grumman seaplane that crashed after a structural failure just off South Beach here in Miami hit close to home because I'd flown aboard that very same aircraft less than a year before on that same flight, and the cause of the accident was metal fatigue so in a way it could just as easily have happened to me, as that old metal was a ticking time bomb. Gives me the willies imagining what those people went through and how easily it could have been me.
