Impressive Aerial Pic Of NY

Fri Aug 24, 2007 8:55 am

Sharpness varies over this pic (which is large, 4.7 MB) but there's more detail than the usual out-the-window view

Wonder what altitude it was from-- a flight into BOS would be a reasonable suspect, except you wouldn't think he could get this good a result pointing the camera 45 degrees out the window.

Cool shot. Is that altitude too high for a descending flight to JFK (fly past JFK, turn around then land) ?

Great shot indeed of one of the greatest cities in the world.

Too low for that, unless the entire flight was flown at low altitude. This looks to be around 9 or 10 thousand feet.

It's not, and though the path looks to be a little to the south of what the usual flight path is for JFK arrivals from the west, that would be my guess as to what it was if we knew that the photo were taken from an airliner. It could just be some guy in a 172 taking the shot - if so, he's one lucky guy.

Great pic! What are the five white outlined rectangles just to the left of the lower left-hand corner of Central Park?

I believe that's a building. I haven't been down there in a while, so I don't know which one it is, but there is a new one in that area that recently got finished. It doesn't look like that, but it might either be a scaffolding for construction or some effect of the light. I can't think of anything else that it could be.

I also noticed that the QM2 is at her dock at the Ship Terminal (left side of picture), and I can see my apartment building.

No, it's much higher than that. See the Empire State Building? Stack eight of them atop one another-- do they come anywhere near the horizon? But if the camera were at 10000 ft they'd reach above it.

Yes, that is odd. It's got to be the Hearst Bldg, on the west side of 8th Ave, but I can't tell whether it was still under construction when the pic was taken.

Can't tell how high he was, but his lat-lon was about 40.625, 74.040, west of Bay Ridge.

It doesn't look anything like that building in the link. It's hard to figure out exactly what it is: it looks like a flaw in the photograph, but, going by the angle the rectangles seem stacked at, it fits in perfectly with the other buildings. Yet there is a complete absence of detail in the area, which is completely at odds with the rest of the city. Strange.

The thing about the Hearst Building-- those aluminum (?) strips crisscrossing the faces catch the sun. If the sun happened to be at the right angle relative to the camera you could expect to see ten brilliant white horizontal lines-- but they shouldn't be the same length. (You'd think we could see them alternating between short and long.) And the vertical lines I can't account for-- that's why I'm guessing it was still under construction, for lack of a better theory.

In any case, there's nothing else at that location that explains the pic.

I'm baffled. It looks as if the rectangles are hovering in mid-air.

There is snow on the ground. Look at LGA and that giant cemetary in Queens.
