Scottsdale, AZ School Busses Vandalized.

Sat Aug 25, 2007 10:08 am

79 busses at a Scottsdale school district bus facility were damaged overnight (this morning) affecting 22 schools. I don't get why people would do this. This is really stupid. Maybe some kids were trying to get school to be cancelled for today. Kids like this should be punished harshly, that is if the perps were kids. Lucky, the school district has insurance to cover this. I think on the news, they said this isnt the first time this has happened.

Good riddance!  no  Some people's kids!

Looks like more work for shop foreman and his assistant. Why would someone want to vandalise a school bus? Anyone know if they are Thomas or International models with flat or conventional style hoods?

The news showed footage of an auto glass company replacing the school bus windshields. So I don't think the shop foreman and his assistant had to do very much. The cost is estimated at $150,000 worth of damage.

Both models and both style hoods.

If that had happened in Tucson, the impact would have been much greater. Tucson Unified School District does not currently have a maintenance facility (hasn't for the past three years) and would be hard pressed to make large scale repairs using their makeshift temporary facilities. The reason they don't have a shop is that the TUSD bus garage and parts storage building burned to the ground about four years ago. According to the fire marshal's report, the fire destroyed five buses along with the entire facility. The source of the fire was reported to have been faulty wiring on a Thomas Safety Liner bus that was in the shop for repairs.

I do too. Brevard County operates 4 shops for mechanical repairs, 2 paint shops, and has 8 assigned bases. My favorite is the Type A conventional. Can't beat that and Thomas does not make them except the newer C2 model based on the Freightliner business class chassis. International does though which is based on its prostar chassis I believe.

A couple of years ago somebody in Mat-Su got into the Laidlaw yard and unplugged all the busses and let the air out of the tires by removing the valve stems.

Which doesn't sound that destructive, just incovenient, but because it was -20F when they did it none of the busses could be started, because the pan heaters where not powered, and they couldn't be towed to the barn to warm up because of the flats. A lot of the tires where permenantly damaged because of being flexed flat when that cold.

School got canceled, and I don't know if they ever busted somebody for it.

It's a shame criminals aren't forced to pay restitution to taxpayers. I understand they often get fined as part of their sentence, but they should be forced to pay into a fund that goes towards police officer salaries, etc.

Have any of you had a chance to go for a ride in a BlueBird Vision? My school district took delivery of a bunch of them these past two years, and I've considered riding the school bus just to see if my route is assigned one. They're the best buses in the fleet because they supposedly have air conditioning and AM/FM radio. No luck so far in catching one, so the much more comfortable, quieter Metrobus will have to make do.

My school buses are all Thomas with the exception of Crown models and a few International's. I rode on a crown for 2 yrs and loved it. All of our buses have tape players and AM/FM stereos. My bus driver even had good speakers for a while.

I've not ridden any school buses lately, but Bluebirds are high quality so I would expect them to be very nice. When I was in school in Chattanooga, TN the county owned buses were Thomas and Waynes. The Waynes were pieces of crap but the Thomas coaches were ok. Most of the private coaches that were contracted by the county school system were transit style Bluebirds that were privately owned and operated. They were very nice. Some of them even had AC packs-rare in Tennessee at that time.

Here in Tucson, all school buses and transit buses have AC-in fact, if the AC gives out during the warmer spring and fall months, they will often pull the coach from service. Tucson, Marana, Sunnyside, Amphitheater and Catalina all run a mix of Bluebirds and Safe-T-Liners. all of them being transit style. Most are cab over engine though a few are pusher engines.

The judge can order restitution towards the school district.

As for the Vision, I don't think that it will catch on out here. Of all the various school districts, I think that only the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind use conventional frame buses. Everyone else uses transit style coaches.

I only guess that they are 65 or 75 pax and it looks some are brand new and/or a couple of years old. Why do they not have regular Type C conventional?

Agreed. I wish they would restart production of the Type C conventional FS-65. Love them. Brevard County has around 450 Type C and 150+ C2 by Thomas. The blue birds are 89-91 models and are used for spares. We withdrew the last one from regular runs in 04.

I loved the old Crowns. There's nothing like a bus with a stick shift and giant piston to hold the door closed.

Our Crowns are Auto's with air doors. We have 9 at the main compound where my driver's bus got dispatched from.

I hated the Crowns when I was in school. The Thomases were much, much better. Fortunately when I hit Jr. High, I was lucky enough to see the first Thomas and it was on my route to school! It was KING! Even the Ski Schools used Thomas only when they were new (9 busses total to Snoqualmie Pass in WA State) and I think they still use them today.
