Seeking Recommendations For Vacation In December

Tue Aug 28, 2007 3:13 am

I am looking at going onto a vacation early December but I could use some more suggestions.
However, this whole thing is limited by a number of factors:
  • Duration: About 1 week, preferrably 08-DEC thru 15-DEC (+/- 1 day)
  • Climate: Should be between 15 and 25 °C (60 to 80F), but not considerably warmer or colder
    - no high humidity compared with temps over 30 °C. I will take along my mum and she gets problems in tropic conditions.
  • Departure needs to be from HAJ. If I can't fly out of HAJ, it's a no-no, but transfers on the same ticket are okay.
  • No Cruises please !
  • Interesting illuminations for X-Mas would be a nice touch, but are not required.

Overall costs are not a deciding factor if the trip gives value for money.

At present, I have shortlisted:
  • Portugal: Algarve , Algarve & Lisbon, Lisbon & Funchal, Lisbon & Azores
  • Spain: Western Andalucia (either via SVQ or FAO), Costa del Sol & Costa de la LUz (AGP --> XRY) (I still need to explore the area west of Tarifa).
  • U.S: Las Vegas, NV & Tucson, AZ

Runner ups:
- Cyprus
- Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Still under consideration:
- Aswan (Assuan), Egypt - My last visit to this city was in 1990. Any idea how it is today ? Desert Climate would be okay.

Any recommendations ?

Tucson is a nice place to visit but I think you will want to explore other areas of Arizona after more than a few days there.

Quoting HT (Thread starter):
Spain: Western Andalucia (either via SVQ or FAO), Costa del Sol & Costa de la LUz (AGP --> XRY) (I still need to explore the area west of Tarifa).

I can recommend the area around Alicante. A friend and me are frequently there in December/January and we never had bad weather so far, the temperatures are around 22°C during the day and a bit cooler in the night. Usually we have breakfast and dinner outside in the garden (it is already warm in the morning and still warm in the evening), one year we could even swim in the pool on the 28th of December.

You have the beautiful coast, the hinterland with its mountains, and the party towns Alicante and Benidorm. You won't get bored at all when you have a rental car.

Getting to ALC should be no problem from Hanover, I don't know if Air Berlin is flying nonstop but I am pretty sure that you can reach ALC from HAJ via PMI.

A friend and me will be there again after Christmas, I always liked it there and I am looking really forward to another holiday there.

No nonstops from HAJ in December, but connections via PMI are frequent (actually all the flights to the places in Spain and Portugal (apart from FNC and the Azores) I considered were on AB via PMI).

"Alicante" instantly brings a possible combination with Valencia to my mind. Flight options on AB are frequent.
Other option from ALC would be to make my way southwards and then return out of either MJV or LEI. I will have a look into hotels later ...

I have spent vacation in Tucson twice so I am aware what to expect. On these occasions, I have made TUS the "base camp" for day trips (by car and by aircraft). But during the vacation in planning, I would have to shoehorn Las Vegas and Tucson into about 8 nights stay, so it will not get boring as I would have to show the area to my mum ...
