Bass and guitar for a bit over six years. Working on drums and harmonica when I can, looking to get myself something else to learn soon (mandolin? banjo?).

Alto Saxaphone

I took that for three years, and much to my dismay I was better on a trumpet the first time I picked one up than I was on an alto sax after three years of diligent practice.  Sad

It was at that point I gave up on playing instruments.

I play woodwinds. Specifically, that would include all the common saxes (don't have a bass sax yet), clarinets from Bb soprano to EEb contra-alto, and flutes from piccolo to G alto. I generally consider my primary horn to be baritone sax, but I bounce around a lot, especially if I'm playing in pit orchestras.

By the way, if anyone wants to hear a sound clip, there's one here of a big band gig I did last June. It features me and Roger Neumann on bari saxes, with me taking the first solo.

I can play the Tenor Horn, French Horn and Baritone and also the piano. I learned to play them all as a kid, firstly the piano and then the Tenor Horn in a junior band. Having learnt to play that, a French Horn and Baritone are fairly easy to pick up.

Sadly I'm very rusty indeed as i haven't played any of those instruments in a long time - I just don't get the time any more and other pursuits have taken over when I do have some free time.

Oh and I just wanted to Add: My video above is of me playing Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto, 1st Movement. The etire movement is about 12 min long, way too long to take with a digital camera, and I don't have a DVR, so the sound quality is bad and it is short, but you get the general drift of things. Other videos of this piece being played by professionals are on youtube.

Taught myself to play "Rock of Ages" on a concertina when I was 17 and had no neighbors.
Taught myself to play "Red River Valley" backwards on keyboard - with headphones while on medical leave.
Played "Taps" on the first try on a red plastic 4-valve toy trumpet.

And that is it.

Are you guys able to hear the orchestra okay? I re-shot this video in hopes of tuning in the orchestra part a little more. In my previous video I had up for a short while, the piano drowned out the orchestra too much. I kept the "soft" pedal on most of the recording.

You sound like my piano teacher, sans the Russian accent. I take piano from Tatiana Kuleshova who trained at the Russian Moscow Conservatory. She's just a few years older than I am, fabulous looking, and a great pianist. Her dad, Dr. Valery Kuleshov is a well known pianist, and I believe he received the silver medal in the famous "Van Cliburn" piano contest. Anyway, he's the artist in residence at the University of Central Oklahoma and Tatiana (Tania) teaches there as well.

Anyway, it's funny when I play this piece for her, it's like old "Mother Russia" comes out in here and she will yell things like, PEDAL! FINGERS! LOUD! (Russian accent applied). She slaps me underneath my hands sometimes too! LOL.

Started on piano when I was 6 I think, took lessons for 6 years or so. Can still play a little bit.

Started trumpet in 5th grade, played through freshman year of college. Still have it and pick it up occasionally.

Got my first drum kit the summer after 8th grade. Still play when no one's home  Smile

Guitar around 10th grade, give or take. Still play.

Bass guitar sometime in college. Quickly became my favorite instrument. Still play.

Here's my baby that I bought a few months ago:

I am a good listener. I could be a great producer if I wanted to get involved in the music industry. When I hear something good and has lots of potential, I imagine just a few subtle changes that would make the music sound like a master piece. Some artist don't like that.
I have a lady friend that is a background vocalist and dancer for a local band that plays jazz & funk but they're music is destroyed by this guy up front that raps and plays no instrument. I've told her several times that her band should dump the rapper because I told her it was the equivalent graffiti spay-painted over Picasso. One night they had a show and the band had set up on stage and the club was packed and the rapper did not show up. It was one of the best live shows I had seen at a local club here in town.

Played tenor saxophone through the schools and was part of my school's band and marching band.

To brag just a little, we did the Columbus Day Parade down Fifth Avenue in NYC and won first place every year I did it (3) and in history 9 out of 12 times.

Music is the one thing our school does really well so the distirct gives it money. The HS just got a new band room and our marching band has over 200 members. It was like a second family.

At college now, I haven't played in a while and I really miss it.

Here is our ugly banner on Fifth Avenue:

I have been a musician nearly all my life...despite having no ears!

Piano

I have played since the early 1980s, when I was a toddler. I apparently taught myself a little bit how to play on the piano.
My parents discovered my talent in 1984, and signed me up for private piano lessons with a local teacher. Since then, I have performed for family and friends and have given recitals and played in public concerts as well as in school and church. I have been involved musically both in the USA and in London, with university musical groups and performance opportunities.

My piano is a 1914 Hobart M. Cable upright grand, built in Elkhart, IN, near my hometown (Fort Wayne, IN).

Violin

Since 2005, while living in London, I have taught myself to play violin. In London, where I was studying (at King's College London), I found a small music shop, Hobgoblin Music ( http://www.hobgoblin.com/ukhome.php ). At this shop, on Rathbone Place, I found a green violin!

Using this green violin, I re-write many of my songs (from my piano sheet music) for violin in a book of their own--so I have my own music book for violin, full of my arrangements.

I have actually performed in public with this instrument!

Acoustic guitar

My guitar, which I bought in 2001, is an Epiphone Hummingbird dreadnought acoustic guitar. I use it mainly in family sing-alongs at Christmas and around the campfire. I have also used it twice in church, to lead the singing of "Silent Night" for Christmas services.

Someday I want to get a Spanish classical guitar.

Cello (in the future)

In the future, I would like to take on the challenge of teaching myself cello!

Guitar for 7 1/2 years... i still suck really bad at guitar. Picked up a bass a while back and just played it and it was pretty natural to me even without having to play chords and only having 4 strings. I've played drums now for like.... 2 3/4 years now. I'm a drummer for a band so i can't be that bad  Silly

I've played guitar since I was 6 (17 years), bass guitar since I was 9 (14 years), and trumpet since I was 11 (12 years). I can also kind of play trombone, cello, violin, piano, and drums, but not as well.
