An Education Star Takes On New Orleans Schools

Sat Sep 01, 2007 4:54 am

" Last year was a rocky one for the New Orleans Recovery School District, which has run the city's schools since Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of students were turned away because schools and teachers were in short supply. Test scores were at rock bottom. Buildings are still in terrible shape.

But now, there's a new sheriff in town. Paul Vallas has taken over as superintendent, after running schools in Philadelphia and Chicago.

Good luck, Paul Vallas is going to need a miracle, not only having to deal with the after effects of Katrina, but the generational problems of families not taking education seriously..Best of luck ..

Put it this way.....my kids are in a private school out here in Jefferson Parish, a suburb of Orleans Parish/New Orleans proper...and the Jeff Parish public school system is miles better than the Orleans system.

Hopefully Vallas will be able to do positive things with the Orleans public schools...the smallest of which would be no small miracle...that system is a mess.
