Pretty awful thing to say, but for all the good he's done over the years, he deserves one pass for being an idiot if he truly knows what he said was wrong.

I hope this doesn't turn into a media-fueled public lynching of Jerry Lewis.

God, I hope so too. This is a non-event. It seems that every word can become a four-lettered word these days when the right special interest group pushes hard enough.

Sounds like Jerry caught hiimself ... in which case, let it rest.

Well, it isn't a 4 letter word, but it is at least as insulting to millions of people.

Yeah. "Offensive" is whatever a special interest group makes of it.

This isn't some little "special interest". This is a whole group of people who are having their very nature insulted. It is no different than using the N word for black people or any other slur you can think of.

Well, he is getting up there and was on hour 18 of the broadcast.....I don't think he takes naps in the middle of it.

And as mentioned he caught himself.

So who cares if he thought the kid looked like a fag, which is a Marijuana cigarette.

Sometimes, some people should know when it is time to leave the stage. Jerry Lewis is quite old at 81 and has had serious health problems for years and one has to wonder if he should let someone else take over his important MDA fundraiser. Comments like he just made will put pressure on the major corporate sponsors to not donate in the future.
Worse, is why we have to raise money through charity to deal with those with or to find cures or other ways to deal with a group of serious medical problems. That should be the job of our government.

Older people frequently use language that younger ones find, at best, inappropriate. It's a generational thing. The fact that he caught himself actually speaks well for him. No need to slaughter the man for it.

He obviously has a mental illness and needs to seek treatment for it.

If I'm able to host a telethon at the age of 81 I'll be doing pretty good...

So by this logic, terms like "kike," "guinea," and "spear-chucking ditsoon" are solely manufactured by special interests (as opposed to being a raw manifestation of socio-ethnic hatred), and those individuals on the receiving end of such epithets should be told to just "get over it"...

I think the K-word is patently offensive to many people, particularly when someone says it out of pure hatred. The second word you listed is probably less so, and the last one I have no idea what that means lol. But I would never use the K-word personally.

"spear-chucking ditsoon"

"Ditsoon" is an Italian-American slur used to describe Blacks. (it appeared occasionally on "The Sopranos")

Especially since it was in the 18th hour, as I understood it...had it been in first few hours, it'd likely be more of an issue, I suspect...

On the other hand, I get called a 'limey', a 'pommie bastard', a 'sassanach', and a 'gringo' quite regularly. I choose not to be offended. Shit, I even got called 'a white man's porch monkey' not so long ago by a very angry man. I thought that one was particularly creative and funny.

While there is a line that can be crossed, I think that some people can be a little over-sensitive and make a big deal out of one-time slip ups like JL's.

Interviewer: Alright, Mr. Wilson, you've done just fine on the Rorshact.. your papers are in good order.. your file's fine.. no difficulties with your motor skills.. And I think you're probably ready for this job. We've got one more psychological test we always do here. It's just a Word Association. I'll throw you out a few words - anything that comes to your mind, just throw back at me, okay? It's kind of an arbitrary thing. Like, if I say "dog", you'd say..?

Mr. Wilson: "Tree".

Interviewer: "Tree". [ nods head, prepares the test papers ] "Dog".

Mr. Wilson: "Tree".

Interviewer: "Fast".

Mr. Wilson: "Slow".

Interviewer: "Rain".

Mr. Wilson: "Snow".

Mr. Wilson: "Pod".

Interviewer: [ casually ] "Negro".

Mr. Wilson: "Whitey".

Interviewer: "Tarbaby".

Mr. Wilson: [ silent, sure he didn't hear what he thinks he heard ] What'd you say?

Interviewer: [ repeating ] "Tarbaby".

Mr. Wilson: "Ofay".

Interviewer: "Colored".

Mr. Wilson: "Redneck".

Interviewer: "Junglebunny".

Mr. Wilson: [ starting to get angry ] "Peckerwood!"

Interviewer: "Burrhead".

Mr. Wilson: [ defensive ] "Cracker!"

Interviewer: [ aggressive ] "Spearchucker".

Mr. Wilson: "White trash!"

Interviewer: "Jungle Bunny!"

Mr. Wilson: [ upset ] "Honky!"

Interviewer: "Spade!

Mr. Wilson: [ really upset ] "Honky Honky!"

Interviewer: [ relentless ] "Nigger!"

Mr. Wilson: [ immediate ] "Dead honky!" [ face starts to flinch ]

Interviewer: [ quickly wraps the interview up ] Okay, Mr. Wilson, I think you're qualified for this job. How about a starting salary of $5,000?

Mr. Wilson: Your momma!

Interviewer: [ fumbling ] Uh.. $7,500 a year?

Mr. Wilson: Your grandmomma!

Interviewer: [ desperate ] $15,000, Mr. Wilson. You'll be the highest paid janitor in America. Just, don't.. don't hurt me, please..

Mr. Wilson: Okay.

Interviewer: [ relieved ] Okay.

Mr. Wilson: You want me to start now?

Interviewer: Oh, no, no.. that's alright. I'll clean all this up. Take a couple of weeks off, you look tired.

[ fade ]

Great skit, but it is better when you actually watch it. The transcript doesn't do it justice.
