Happy 30th Birthday Voyager I!

Thu Sep 06, 2007 11:34 am

Voyager I turns 30 today--it was launched on Sept. 5, 1977.  birthday

Pretty amazing stuff that it is still operational after all this time. One of the great success stories of space exploration.

Some cool pictures taken over the years by it and Voyager II:

The 12-inch gold-plated copper phonograph record was intended to serve as a time capsule that could communicate the story of Earth to extraterrestrials

Anyone here under 20 know what a phonograph record is?

I think the coolest pic taken by voyager is 'the pale blue dot'. This pic is not only cool but very significant. The pale blue dot where the arrow is pointing is earth as seen from Voyager after it had left Pluto.

Like Carl Sagan said ' "Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam'

Rest in peace Carl.

I'm 21 and I know what one is, but I have to admit that if I didn't and saw these instructions, I wouldn't have a clue in hell what to do:

7 billion, one nation,'s a beautiful day

Probably better off in Mil/Space, but yes, what a significant milestone, 30 years in space and still operating.
And IIRC, they keep on extending the estimated date the power will finally run down.
I can remember when it was this decade, then around 2020, last I read it might be nearer 2030.

Whatever, it will in one sense, go on forever in our terms, when it finally does degrade structually and break up, eventually into it's component atoms, the species who built it, will probably be long gone anyway.

So as of now, there are 4 probes heading into Interstellar space, to be followed eventually by the one heading out to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt?
Even more impressive, the first two, the Pioneers, were essentially knocked together from spares.
