The Germans Are Leaving!

Thu Sep 06, 2007 9:40 pm

Another blow to us folks here in Southeast Michigan!

VW moving HQ out of Michigan

Volkswagen AG is moving its North American headquarters from Michigan to northern Virginia to attract a younger skilled workforce, according to a report in the Washington Post Thursday morning.

The German automaker has 1,600 employees at its Volkswagen of America offices in Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills. The Post reports suggest that the company will move about 400 jobs and invest about $100 million in a move to Herdon, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C. The paper also reported that about 400 Detroit-area jobs would be eliminated leave 600 positions in Southeast Michigan.

An interesting article. It rings a bell for me as a former Michigander and a confirmed midwesterner.

It sounds from the article that VW's US operations have fallen on parlous times. I can tell you that there'll be no reasonable housing cost in the DC area. One wonders what the takehome would be today if they'd kept Westmoreland open back in the day.

The ups and downs of the auto industry always cause chills in the area for the worker bees because there are small subassembly producers all over the place, and guys with stripped out turbo commanders flying hotshot parts deliveries all over Michigan and Ohio. Fact is, one of my pals from back in the day bought the farm flying going into Cadillac on a parts run.

I've got a pal who works for the corporate aviation department of Pfizer, formerly Pharmacia, formerly Upjohn in K'zoo and he tells me that they've been going through the research operations in Michigan like shit through a goose.

I may be an optimist-you have to be to live in Michigan-but I think the General and Ford will survive, grow and prosper although things will never be the same as they were years ago. I'm not so sure about Chrysler.

Yeah, the French say that every 20 or 30 years... But the Germans are repeat customers, though...  Wink

only to be filled up with Granholm's oh so brilliant scheme of more jobs as road construction workers  banghead   biting

I think the local impact of our crappy economy could have been seriously reduced if only Michigan diversified during the oil embargo in the 1970s. Yet we are still too dependent on the auto industry.

Ha! too true. Just what the DC area needs.

I agree--Chrysler should get Lee Iacocca back for Part Deux before it's too late. For Iacocca, not Chrysler.
