Guatemala Votes After Violent Pres. Election

Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:57 pm

No candidate receives outright win; runoff to follow on November 4. It seems like a day doesn't go by without some politician or someone related to politics being violently murdered in the runup to the election. Hopefully things will cool off after yesterday.

I hear in swedish news programs that it was a election without violence
and that many people actually did vote.

Maybe the actual election but the period leading up to it was very violent, particularly if you were in any way related to any of the candidates.

I hope for the sake of Guatemala that they didn't vote for any of those radical nationalist populists allied with Chávez and Castro.

The election itself was quite peaceful... hopefully it will stay that way until the second round.

While I'm not fond of either of the candidates and I'm afraid we'll be royally screwed up for the next 4 years no matter which one is elected  Yeah sure, thankfully neither of them is a leftist. In fact, none of the candidates de izquierda reached a significant amount of votes.
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

That's a good sign. Last year, the elections were a mess because it was too close to call a winner and the votes had to be manually recounted before a winner could be declared. Had that leftist-populist idiot Ottón Solís won, we wouldn't be discussing the referendum on CAFTA here in Costa Rica at all, because Solís is one of those who supports unions and radical groups of farmers and students against CAFTA, even though this country NEEDS CAFTA.
