CNN - So Little News In So Much Time

Tue Sep 11, 2007 11:17 am

When travelling CNN is often the only English speaking television station available in hotels. I can't believe how pathetic CNN is. If I were to write a slogan for them (and don't they love their slogans) it would be "So little news in so much time." Even Australia's Channel 10 news seems to contain more actual news than CNN. So far as I can tell CNN has about 4 or 5 main stories in a day and just subjects them to endless "analysis" which is no better than personal opinions. Worse is that news is often not very important to the majority of people in the world.

Here's a selection that I caught on our trip to Japan - and this is over a few days too:

* Microwave popcorn can cause health problems
* Some actor is running for US President
* Oprah's influence on politics
* US senator busted in a toilet may change plea.
* Steve Fossett is missing
* Blah, blah, blah

At least they did show an item about the Chaser's APEC stunt but neglected to mention the fact that the Chaser team did a CNN spoof called CNNNN which was much more interesting than the real thing.

Now maybe you are interested in some of those things because you are American (or in Steve Fossett's case because you are an aviation nut) but why the need for endless rehashing and the injection of personal opinion rather than objectivity by journalists? State what you know, then get on to the next item.

While CNN was discussing microwave popcorn the Japanese news was following live feeds on a typhoon blowing over Tokyo. Both flights and trains were cancelled. That kind of news would have been useful for a traveller in Japan or intending to visit. What's the point of calling it CNNj if there is no J component but insurance adverts?

I've never been to the US, but is CNN a reflection of the American style news? If so, it only breeds ignorance about the rest of the world.

I gave up on all the TV news stations when they started covering Anna Nicole. I realized at that point our news was beyond help. If I wanted to see that crap I would get my news from E.

Because it is easier to glom onto one story and beat it for all its worth then to actually send people out to report on many different stories. The news media has gotten lazy in the last few years.

Anderson Cooper has become a blathering whiner since Katrina. He used to get into reporting and investigating real news, but now he spends a shitload of hours every night pretending he's doing a lame-assed Save the Children infomercial.

We're in the same boat.... I quit taking CNN seriously when they put a friggin' celebrity gossip hour, in prime time, on their Headline News channel.  mad

Yeah, I met him in 2004 and he was one of the brightest, nicest and straight headed guys I ever met. And he also did some damn good newscasting. But in recent days, he has gone downhill...I never really watch his show anymore.

She has an impact on one persons fans - Obama's. Everyone else could really give a damn. Oprah has always annoyed the hell out of me, as has Obama, so the combo is...well...it makes me want to vote for him even less. Woooo, Oprahhhhhh.

For being a recovering addict, the new sober and clean Glenn Beck, who's a Mormon, is the biggest son of a bitching sarcastic jerk I've ever seen on TV. Most guys get civil and calm once they sober up. He getting meaner and nastier every day. I can't stand to watch and listen to him anymore. WTF happened?

There is only one remedy - ditch your TV. I haven't watched TV in over 5 years now, 8 if you don't count the post-9/11 period.

Best decision in my life. Amazing what a mind-numbing and time-wasting drug it is.

Fortunately we haven't got CNN at home and I have no desire to get any Pay-TV service. Not while there's ABC with Doctor Who and SBS with quirky stuff. I only have to put up with CNN while travelling and we don't spend much time in the hotel room watching tv!

My point is that, based upon what I've seen of CNN, you could repeat the weekly half hour news bulletin on a free to air Australian network (and probably many other countries') throughout a day and you would probably still show as much real news as CNN. Okay, maybe have an additional 15 minute sports round-up now and then.  Smile

It scares me that people use CNN as a news resource because, again based upon what I've seen, the analysis and interpretation is pitiful. Ideally, of course, nobody would rely on a single news source and thankfully the internet allows us to view many different news sources.

It's a pity that the English speaking networks of the world don't get together to produce an international news channel, each dealing with their own region. It would be interesting to watch, say, some Indian news interspersed with Canadian, New Zealand, etc. Oh, and in my ideal news world no newsreader would ask "what's the feeling you are getting from..." and no reporter would use the term "sense".  Smile

I forgot to link to the Chaser's CNNNN parody in my original post.

It's too bad you were spending all your time watching CNN instead of exploring the wonderment this country has to offer.

That said CNNj is a one-off local production for the American expat-heavy Japanese market. There is more US content than CNN International normally broadcasts. CNN International in its uninterrupted format is not at all bad. It's too bad those of us here can't get the same CNN as the rest of Asia.

CNN is a disaster. It has been in a bad state for many, many years. Mercifully in recent years most big hotel chains etc have starting acquiring BBC. Which too is slipping but is still way better than CNN. Do not ever make the mistake of watching CNN for more than ten minutes at a time, you will wan to pop yourself.

Their analysis is often laughable. I recall when the US conducted strikes on targets in Sudan the anchor doing the coverage on 4 separate occasion in under 20 minutes took the time to remind the viewers at home not to confuse Sudan the country with Saddam the person - simply mind-blowing!

Here's a little video for you. From the stupid to the creepy to the WTF?

And as I said ... you produce for 24 hours straight and get back to us.

Continuous news programming is a potpourri of coverage ... hit, pick, choose, miss, and nail it. The average viewer is an "on the go viewer" that probably watches for up to 9 minutes at a time, uninterrupted. When it's continuously played in a venue, the viewer cues in for probably 4 or 5 minutes per half hour of watching ... on average.

Ugh.... Don't get me started on Fox 12 Oregon! Watching the first 15 minutes of that broadcast makes me wonder why I live in a God-forsaken crime ridden city like Portland! Their newscasters aren't even good looking! Before Channel 12 was bought by FOX, they had news with Kim Singer and Gary Hill. For a while, they had Lars Larson, too. Back then, they reported news: what the legislature is doing, what the city council is doing, school budgets.... State-wide events. Now, it is all about car crashes, fires, robberies and shootings. Any of those four things anywhere in the northern Willamette Valley. I will credit Good Day Oregon with traffic and weather often. Although Tony Martinez does not seem to be flying about much. Just sitting in Air 12 at HIO reporting on slow traffic.

I do my best to not watch ANY national news channel or any local news channel. I do, on occasion, watch KGW (PDX) or Northwest Cable News. If I want any local news, I read the Oregonian (newspaper) and, if I want more information, I turn to the net. National news? The net. But, even then, it can be difficult to find stories.

It's the season.

City council and legislatures are pretty much only in season October - April. School boards only get good December & January and then again in May and June ... and there's the rare August teacher strikes.

Well, the crime and drug bust season lasts from June to May around here. They don't get to school budgets and the legislature until after the first or sometimes the second set of commercials. I have not watched in a while, so I don't know how they are doing in recent months.

But, I agree with you about morning shows: Traffic and weather as much as possible!

I'm past the point of being sick and tired of "Hard On...Apply Directly to the Foreskin" and Viagra and Geico ads during the five minute commercial breaks on CNN and MSNBC. (I don't know about Fox Noose Network... I don't watch that biased shit.) And those commercial breaks come every seven or eight minutes. Jesus bloody Christ. I swear there are more damned ads than news. And the news is repeated over and over again and again. There's lots of news in the world Why do they keep playing the same reports every hour?

Interesting comment. Many would be alarmed at just how biased CNN is if they'd bother to compare. If all I watched was CNN, I'd hate anything conservatism with a passion. You tune into both CNN and FOX and you get a totally different message politically. One of the problems is both have a political agenda and straight reporting rarely applies. Is there any unbiased journalism out there anymore? Same with ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. CNN and all of these are clearly liberal and I'd be in their camp to if this was all I watched or listen to. There's no argument from me FOX weighs in heavily conservative. But you couldn't convince me FOX is more right and CNN left. FOX commentators have attacked Bush on numerous issues - immigration and the ports affair are two. In fact, I would argue that Hannity and O'Reilly (throw Limbaugh in there as well) have both contributed to Bush's poor approval ratings and they know it.

Along with most of Hollywood and major television networks, CNN is all about condemning anything conservative and searching out the latest setback - God forbid any progress - in Iraq.

NY Times, CNN, Hollywood... Arrrgh. All the same to me. Left, left, and far left.

Thanks all the same, but I'll continue to watch a little of CNN and FOX both so I don't walk around with blinders on. And I'm not implying you do AsstChiefMark.

Left, left and far left in America only. From a European point of view, that would be more like center-right, center-right and center.

It's interesting how the "far left" of the American political scene would be considered just about centrist over here, while the GOP would be (and in fact, is) reviled as the very farthest fringe of the extreme right. But that's a different thread altogether...

Sometimes the adverts end, here comes the anchor and says "Coming Up Next...", and after a minute, back to the adverts. I just don't get that why show 8 minutes of adverts, then come back for a minute just to tell the already bored audience what's next, and go back to another 8 minutes of adverts. Do they really need that much advertising revenue, or do they just use the adverts as "fillers" because of the lack of news?

When was the last "true" newscast on CNN anyway? Dessert Storm?

Don't worry - I spent very full days outside exploring wonderful Japan (I've been there 5 times in 5 years!). CNN was a background noise in English while getting ready in the morning and uploading photos and blogging at night - after everything had closed outside. I would have listened to streaming content from elsewhere but didn't have enough USB ports to hook up the speakers. My comments are based not just on CNNj either, but the sum total of CNN seen while travelling Europe and other parts of Asia as well.
