The Patriots Might Have Spied On The Jets

Tue Sep 11, 2007 7:51 pm

Read this article....

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...iots.jetsspy.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

What's wrong New England...don't have enough confidence in beating the Jets without resorting to spying? I see how things are done in Foxboro....

This isn't the first time, the same guy was caught last year at Lambeau doing the same thing.

Remember this is the team that used a convict on a snowplow to win a playoff game.

Maybe the Jets should use a more complicated signal system. If it can be cracked over the course of one game, it might not be the most fool proof of systems.

Video taping public actions happening between team and management in full view of thousands of spectators - calling it spying is certainly an over reaction.

I would call it valid tactics, and the rules against it are, quite frankly, ludicrous.

Who needs to steal the Jet's signals?

Here is their offense.

1st down - try to bust it up the middle. 2 yards

2nd & 8 - see first down.

3rd & 6 Pennington dump pass in the flat.

Bring on the punting unit please.

If the Jet's refuse to get of that weak armed quarterback they will never be better than a second rate team.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

LOL very good point.

The "Snowplow Caper" was the last game of the strike-shortened 1982 season and it enabled the Patriots to beat the Dolphins 3-0 and get into that year's special Super Bowl Tournament. The next week, the Dolphins defeated the Patriots in the first round of the playoffs--in Miami.

What goes around comes around!

NFL Rules prohibit videotaping from the sidelines or from the coaches booths the signals of other teams for the purpose of learning the signals. They should lose the proposed draft picks and be banned from the playoffs regardless their record at the end of the season. If they got caught twice, you can be damn sure it isn't the 3rd or 4th times it's happened.

Let's do this for all the teams that have had a player found to be using steriods or HGH too. There, you got the Pats twice!

I can't condone any form of cheating, but do you suppose other teams may have done this?

Where did I do that?

All I was getting at is that this sort of thing happens all the time in baseball, and no doubt in every sport where it is possible. As you said in the Ellis Hobbs thread:

Quoting Boeing7E7 (Reply 22):
A cheat is a cheat.

So whether other teams have been caught (and I don't know if they have) stealing signs, if they have, they are cheats. If a team has a player suspended for substance violations, they are, by association, on a team that is cheating. If a cheat is a cheat, then every team should be banned from the playoffs. I was NOT trying to justify cheating, I was simply notying that if every team that cheats were banned from the playoffs for cheating, well, you get the rest.

Next time, try to get me to clarify before you jump to an inflammatory conclusion that is inaccurate. That's all I ask.

There is no offense a team could commit that would result in that penalty. None.

This is all part of the game and once in a while someone will get caught. I do think the NFL has is priorities screwed up when they go after someone 'stealing signs' cheating, but they won't go after far more important issues like head injuries to players, players using illegal drugs, players getting into off-the-field criminal beheavors, and so on.

I wouldn't put it past the coach...can't speak for the rest of the team. BTW, speaking of Bill Bellicik ,did you notice the classless move at the end of the Super Bowl last year when Manning went up to him and he just brushed Manning off? He barely made eye contact with him. It was painfully obvious right there on TV. That's when my respect for that guy went down the tubes big time.

It's as stupid as a bunch of burglars videotaping their break-ins. Then they wonder why the cops took their camera and used the taped evidence against them in court.

Looks like the geniuses from the Super Bowl era are roughing it now - Crennel's Browns stink, Weis' Irish stink (no tears shed here, though  Wink ) and now this for the Pats. Not that that's all reason to be joyous - I'm not much of a Belicheck fan, although, I do like his strategizing (and he comes from the Parcells coaching tree  thumbsup  ), Weis is a good guy (except he chose to go to ND) and Crennel just coaches a perennial loser.

In 1982, during a game between Miami and cheating new england, A real bad blizzard, no one could move the ball. Both teams tried to kick fieldgoals but missed. Then the cheating pats were setting up for one and this guy drives out onto the field on a little snow blower, and clears a spot for the kicker. It is good, and when Miami goes to kick a fieldgoal, the guy refused to do it for Miami. Cheating Bastards.

In December of 1982, the Pats were playing the Dolphins at (then) Shaefer Stadium in Foxborough. The day before it had rained, and everything froze up overnight, and a snowstorm came through during the game. Late in the game, it was 0-0 and the Pats were going to try for a field goal.

Mark Henderson was, at the time, an inmate at Walpole State prison on a work release to drive a snow plow for the game. I don't know the exact rules, but use of snowplows is typically directed by the referees during timeouts to clear the yardlines and sidelines and such. Anyway, the Pats sent Mark Henderson out to clear a spot for John Smith, who kicked the field goal and the Pats won 3-0. It was clearly an underhanded act, as it's unlikely (REALLY unlikely) they would had offered the same courtesy to the Dolphins.

To be honest with you it was less than 4 inches of snow and nothing even close to a blizzard more like light snow and flurries. I should know since I was sitting in Sec 206

LOL!!!

My father used to go to the game in Miami every single year. I always laughed at him for wasting his money since we both know how every trip to the Orange Bowl ended right up till the playoffs in 86......

According to Chris Mortensen, the Pats are not the only team to do this stuff, but not all teams do it. Goodell should come down pretty hard on this shit though, because not only were the Pats warned specifically about doing this after being under suspicion last year during the GB game but every one of the 32 teams were informed that this was against league rules.

I think there might be more to this story than we already know. Bill Belichick is a pretty smart guy, I have a feeling he is up to something here.

Here is a photo of the cameraman in question..

http://www.touchdown.org/pats-camera.jpg

Now, this cameraman has been with the Patriots for 4 years. His previous job with the team was editing the film packages used by the team to prepare for games. He worked editing film for Eric Mangini and the Patriots D for 2 years before Mangini left for NY. So, here is a guy, known by name to Mangini, standing on the sideline 30 feet away from him with the camera. If they really wanted to steal anything, wouldn't you

A) Use somebody Mangini has never seen before and does not know he works for the team.

B) Not stand 30 feet away right out in the open with the camera when you can just as easily record from elsewhere unnoticed.

I can only think of two reasons for doing something this blantent.

He is playing mind games with the Jets or he is trying to force the NFL into a rule change.
The last 2 years putting the same audio equipment the QB uses on the defensive side of the ball has come up for a vote. It has failed but this season by just 2 votes. By creating the cameragate controversy it may be Bills way of forcing the owners to act on the issues. If the equipment was in place there would be no need for any hand signals and we all know what an evil genuis BB can be on D......

I'm sure sooner or later the truth will come out.

Quoting KBOS (Reply 48):

Interesting post, KBOS. Well, he's been charged, so I'm not going to try to spin this too much just yet, but it does beg the question as to why Belichick would be so blatant about doing this. Certainly he knew he'd get caught by being so obvious. Also, there is an interesting dynamic going on between Belichick and Mangini. Once best of friends, they are now, at best, adversaries, and talk on the radio today is that Mangini sort of broke an unwritten rule between coaches by ratting out Belichick. I don't know if I see it that way, but it would seem that some additional, pertinent facts may yet come to light...
