NJ Transit's New Locomotive

Sat Sep 15, 2007 3:38 am

Whoa... I never thought I'd see one of these puppies in other than Amtrak or VIA paint. Click the pic once or twice to enlarge it.

Very Nice, would you happen to know what lines they will be running on?

Perhaps they are for use on the non-electric 'mainlines' of NJ Transit, (former Erie main line, Bergen County lines)

Does not look to different from the ones currently used, but I prefer the older ones.
I have family in NJ and stayed in Bergen County for 4 months this year and traveled with NJ Transit every day to 34rd Street in NYC. Changed every day in Secaucus.

Doesn't look too different? Are you daft? It's the first and only General Electric P-series locomotive for NJ Transit. That's like saying a Volvo looks like a Volkswagen.

Well since when are this locomotives in use ? I have been in NJ from April till July and traveled on the Bergen County Line every week day and every second day I got a engine looking very similar to that one.

I should have mentioned the one I posted is the railroad's first P40DC. I assume the ones you saw were PL42AC's.

Could very well be, I have no idea about trains either German or American. I just clicked on the thread because it mentioned NJ Transit which I traveled nearly every day for 4 months  Wink

I agree. I use the Pascack Valley Line every day in the summer and the ones they use now on most trains don't look any different than this one. Will these eventually be used to replace all the other old ones?

The PL42AC locomotives are different in their engines, horsepower, drive systems, traction motors, and appearance. Here's What one looks like...

Compare it to the P40DC...

I have been on NJ Transit's older trains that aren't very comfortable. And I was in the front and every time the horn blew I jumped (I have sensitive ears).

The new trains look nice.

Those trains look too clean. They need a little graffiti to liven them up.

Yeesh!! I'll take the Flared "40's" currently still in use on NJT. ( I'd rather take the long gone U34CH's, but I'll admit that's asking too much )

Why did Amtrak get rid of that loco anyway?

Amtrak doesn't use many of the P40's anymore. They have been replaced by P42's, which are bascially a more advanced (and reliable) version with the same exterior dimensions.

Who? EWS or Traindriver? I never knew EWS much, but Traindriver seemed like a nice guy, and his posts on railroads were pretty good.
