I asked about a thread on this about a year ago: Windows Vista, Outdated Already? (by N231YE Sep 24 2006 in Non Aviation)

Its nuts that they're thinking ahead that far (by the time you get a "new" version: its already outdated)...then again, with the case of the Sony PlayStation, I heard about Sony talking about the PS4 even before the PS2 made its debut.

Of course considering how long it took for them to release Longhorn, I mean Vista, this next version may still be years away. Vista was in development before XP even hit the streets. Of course the delay was caused by scrapping the original plan to use the XP source code, as Longhorn and Whistler were originally slated to be minor versions in between XP and Blackcomb (Now known as Vienna). If Vienna comes out in 2009, I'd be surprised. Of course, I thought they wouldn't release MSFS-X until some time after Vista came out, so who knows.

Not at all. The development cycle on projects of this magnitude demand that the the product development is planned often two or three versions in the future. When Win2k was released, XP was well in to coding and Vista was on the drawing board.

I understand...its just the fact of the matter, by the time one purchases WindowsX, Microsoft is already 2 operating systems and a few years ahead.

One for Klaus and the Mac fans: Is Apple already working on 10.6 and 10.7 (10.5 Leopard is scheduled to be released in October)

Or more precisely: behind.  mischievous

You can bet on that. But Apple very rarely pre-announces products any farther ahead than they absolutely have to, so we won't know what those plans actually look like. New features are usually embargoed right up to the official keynote presentation.

Although it seems likely now that the next version following Leopard will probably include full ZFS file system support which is kind of a big deal (ZFS support will be read-only and experimental in Leopard for the time being).

10.5 Leopard was actually the first time Apple had a delay of a few months. But that still pales in comparison to several years in the case of Windows Vista.

So is Vienna just another codename? It would be sort of odd to name an operating system after an Austrian city...

Most certainly. They are just far more prudent in tying themselves to a release timeframe so as not to make themselves look stupid; something Microsoft fail at.

It's possible, but it's already had a codename - Blackcomb - so Vienna stands a good chance of being the release title. And it's a lame title if you ask me.
