Bloc Party did a great cover of Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right" for the Radio1 live lounge a number of weeks back. But then Bloc Party make anything sound great.

Clearly Kele Okereke is a genius and musical God.

There are a few.....

'Blinded By The Light' written and performed by Bruce Springsteen but Manfred Mann's version is much better.
I'll try and find video links latter (no access at work)

Sixpence None The Richer's cover of The La's "There She Goes" was pretty good.

And The Killer's cover of Dire Straits' "Romeo & Juliet" was also quite good.

Sixpence None The Richer's cover of The La's "There She Goes" was pretty good.

Which to me is a bit ironic since the song is rumored to be about heroin (Nobody has ever been able to get a straight answer from any member of The La's), and Six Pence None The Richer was a Christian pop band.

Why am I not surprised by your choices?

Dean Martin "Gentle On My Mind" (This song won Glen Campbell a Grammy in 1968 for Best Country & Western Solo Vocal Performance, Male. The same song also won Best Folk Performance Grammy that same year for John Hartford, who wrote the song). Dino's version was released in November of 1968

Frank Sinatra with Antonio Carlos Jobim "Girl From Ipanema"

Sid Vicious (Sometimes credited to the Sex Pistols as it was part of their film "The Great Rock 'n Roll Swindle") "My Way"

I disagree.
Some examples of covers that are superior to the original artist's recordings:

Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through The Grapevine", originally recorded by Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou", originally recorded by Roy Orbison.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap's "Woman, Woman", originally recorded by Johnny Farnham.

The Doors' "Gloria (G-L-O-R-I-A)", originally recorded by The Shadows Of Night.

Ike & Tina Turner's "Proud Mary", originally recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Honorable mention to artists who have released their own distinctive version of other people's songs:

Johnny Cash's "Hurt", originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails.

Vanilla Fudge's "You Keep Me Hangin' On", originally recorded by The Supremes.

Blue Swede's "Hooked On A Feeling", originally recorded by B. J. Thomas.

A cover that was so well done, I was absolutely floored when I found out NIN did it first:

Also an excellent cover - brought her own style to it without killing the meaning of the song:

No guitar sounds better than a 12-string Rickenbacker in the hands of Roger McGuinn...

"Turn! Turn! Turn!" by the Byrds

"Mr. Tamborine Man" by the Byrds

Man... Crosby sure has changed over the years. But he sure looks like he loves to play and sing.

The radio 1: Established 1967 covers are good, My fave so far is Corrine Bailey Rae doing a cover of The Raconteurs "Steady as she goes" was really good, I love that song and she really did it well, even though her own music isn't really my style. There has been some not particularly good ones, someone covered "Toxic" by Britney Spears, it was awful.

Yes!! I listened to the Corrine Bailey Rae one while driving to work. Great stuff. Also heard Natasha Bedingfield doing that Madonna song.

Haven't been able to hear any others but hopefully Radio1 will stick them on te website when they're finished playing them all.

And I think it was Hard-Fi that covered Britnay Spears, I could be wrong.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Shout
originally by the Isley Brothers
(it's over 9 minutes long with killer slide guitar solo. Too bad the camera focus on Tom Petty jumping around insted of the guitar soloist Mike Campbell)

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star
originally The Byrds

There's a few covers I like as much as, if not more than, the original:

Beach Boys cover of "California Dreamin"

The Ataris cover of "Boys of Summer"
(there's also a speed-metal cover of this song, don't know who did it but it's seriously good)

Thrice kicked a$$ on covers of "Eleanor Rigby" and "Send Me An Angel" (yeah, yeah, I know, but it rocks!)
