Kid Nation - Who Watched & What Did You Think?

Thu Sep 20, 2007 10:26 am

"Kid Nation" premiered this evening. If you recall, this is the show that got peoples' thongs in a twist because CBS was going to "abandon" 40 kids in the desert to bring "Lord of the Flies" to reality TV. I usually don't pay much attention to primetime broadcast TV, especially reality shows, but I thought it was amazingly good.

From what I saw, adults were present at all times. They were simply behind the scenes. There was an adult-led town meeting every two days in which kids could opt out and go home. You could also see loads of evidence of ongoing adult intervention in the way the "ghost town" was organized and set up.

I used to be a teacher, so I'm naturally interested in watching children succeed and use their brains for things other than MMORPGs. This is one reality series I'm going to watch.

BTW, they're already taking applications for Kid Nation 2. Some of you kids should go for it.

The 'Kid Nation' production may have violated numerous but weak New Mexico laws as to child labor and protection as well as denying the NM state authorities from entering the property to inspect conditions, including as to labor law and general safety.
The other major pressure point on this show is from the various unions involved in the media companies who are generally excluded from such 'reality' productions. This is especially true as to writers, but where probably many non-union workers were used in the production. Further, there were limited protections for those working on the site with fears of violations of state laws on of work hours and other labor issues which could not occur in union situation. They also would have wanted California standards as to child labor and for all of them to be paid a lot more and be members of the Actors union.

Quoting LTBEWR (Reply 1):

It didn't look like a work situation to me. If anything, it looked like a fancy version of a Nickelodeon kid's action game show.
