Is It Only Me Or...........

Fri Sep 21, 2007 10:34 am

Anybody else likes Windows Vista. I bought a Dell notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium. I am loving the operating system.

Couple of people discouraged me about Vista but I don't see any problems. Guys, tell me your experience with Vista.

Regards

Most of the other people in my dorm have Vista and they don't complain. My parents just got a Vista machine and they don't complain either. I am still running XP because it works fine and I don't feel the need to pay for the upgrade.

Most people I talk to though really don't like Office 2007. I'm not a fan of it either, and plan on sticking with Office 2003. I can get 2007 for $60 though because I have a .edu email address, but have decided against getting it for now.

I was able to get Office 2007 via my dad's work for $20 (Entire office suite). Don't have Vista yet... but I am hoping that will change soon. I actually bought the upgrade in February (Home Premium edition) , but I ran a system diagnostic and found out that my graphics card and memory are not up to par for the minimum operating levels... So now I'm sticking with XP (except Halo 2 on PC is only able to be played on Vista which really pissed me off, I'm not getting an XBOX 360 anytime soon, so it sucks for me...) because I works fine for what I need... A lot of the people I talked to about Vista have generally agreed that there is nothing in the upgrade that couldn't have been included in a patch update/upgrade. Also one guy (computer science major at the university I attend) has said something about problems with Vista's security features... I don't know the specifics though...

I have had Vista for 7 months now, and have reinstalled Windows twice. I sense a third time coming soon.

Wow.. This really clarifies things  sarcastic

I am building up a new computer over the next few weeks. I was thinking about putting Vista on it (I can get it through school for $29.00) I may just put on a 64 bit version of XP though given the mixed reviews.

What does someone really gain by going to Vista? Does anyone know?
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

I'm getting a BSOD every couple of days with Vista but I strongly suspect the old hardware is to blame. The graphics card is only an FX-5900 and, though the main hard drive is a newish SATA version, it tends to hang for a few seconds before many operations - I don't know if Vista is to blame for that.

The few people I know who have Vista on newer machines haven't had any problems with it.

You can get an add-on that restores the "classic" Office menus, without affecting the new ones, if you don't like the new interface. I'm sure I saw a free one but I didn't dwell on it as I don't have Office 2007.

If you're talking about the visible part, maybe, though there may have been too much effort involved to warrant a freebie. There are some big differences below the surface, e.g. an extra layer between the drivers and the OS, so I'm not sure it could have been patched into XP very easily. Even if it had been available as an XP patch, not all XP machines would have the hardware to cope with the patch.

The two development departments I last worked for only switched to XP about 12 to 18 months ago. It had nothing to do with any problems with XP, it just required a lot of testing by people who were already up to their eyes in other work and, with a few hundred PCs involved, was not something that could be done immediately. Most of the issues that were found were due to the use of third party products, which had cut corners, in defiance of Microsoft's guidelines. One of those former employers supplied its front-end software to its clients so the upgrade had to be co-ordinated with them, too.

Maybe they'll switch to Vista in a year or two and maybe they won't but it's not because they don't like Vista that they're still using XP. It's true that NT needed something better to replace it so perhaps the Vista uptake will be slower as it's less urgent.  Smile

Yes, but we don't use operating system specific programs, and if we were to change to Vista tomorrow, it would make no difference with the workings of the programs, it would just be unpleasant.

We only have 3 PCs.

I have Vista on my work computer, and I never use it because it drives me nuts. Put me down as a hater of Vista. I take XP over it any day.

I just built a new computer...

Athlon 64 X2 4400+
1gb RAM (800mhz)
160 GB IDE drive, 7200 RPM for main OS drive, 80 GB SATA drive, as storage drive
Asus 20x DVD+/-RW w/ LightScribe (lightscribe rocks!)

I only have integrated graphics right now... its 128mb shared. The motherboard is an Gigabyte 690G socket AM2. The graphics on it is ATI Radeon Xpress 1250. It has HDMI, Hi-def audio, DVI, and a ton of cool features.

Aero runs fine... Only thing I need more of asap is RAM. Mostly because of the shared video memory. I can play games on low details ok... would be better with more ram.

Once I turned off UAC (user access control... the annoying popups asking if you really want to run the program). Things seem arranged well... and Vista runs faster than XP did on this machine, IMO. More ram, again, would help (running 80-90 % full on RAM meter).... but still!

So... I like it a lot more than XP. Nicer looking... runs smoother... more organized...

I've been running Vista Business for just over a month, and love it! Every once in a while, I have some issues with my graphics card, but that's more Nvidia's fault for not making a better graphics driver.

I'm also running Vista Business, and apart from the expected problems every now and then (which still have considerably gone down after the initial teething problems my system had with Vista), I'm pleased with it. I'm also running Office Ultimate 2007 without any problems on my system (just the expected ones that come from it being brandnew).

If you buy something brandnew from Microsoft, always expect it being full with bugs, despite what their marketing department says. If you buy something from Microsoft with that mentality, you'll be better able to cope with the fact that it's buggy.
