Help Using Gmail In Outlook

Sun Sep 23, 2007 10:59 pm

I've always wanted to use Outlook with my personal email, and so I set up Gmail to be used as a POP email within Outlook (Office 2007 version). The problem is that when I read and delete emails in Outlook, they still remain as unread emails when I access Gmail on IE. Then, if I compose and email in Gmail in the Internet Explorer, then it comes up as a new, unread email in my Inbox inside Outlook.

All this is a bit of a pain as I have several newsletter subscriptions and if I'm going to use Outlook, I don't want to have to go into Gmail on IE periodically to clean out the Inbox.

Any help is appreciated!

Cheers

A true pain the ass - I've had it too. It annoyed me so much I stopped using Gmail POP service and now access it normally.

I can't really help, but you could try IMAP if that's possible with GMail... just a brain fart though.

In the POP settings for Gmail there's an option asking you whether or not you want to keep copies of e-mails in Gmail after they've been accessed through POP3. Check that. The normal Outlook settings (e.g. "delete messages from server" or "keep copies of messages on server") don't work with Gmail. Which annoys me as it makes it virtually impossible to use Gmail with two computers on Outlook.

Gmail does not support IMAP Sad

Tried that already.

I guess the way Gmail is set up you cannot access it on Outlook without the pain of having to go and clean up your inbox manually on IE.

Thanks anyway!

I use Gmail all the time with Thunderbird, and when an email gets downloaded into Thunderbird by POP, it gets moved into my Gmail trash folder and is deleted 30 days later (or whenever Gmail auto-deletes mail from the trash). In Gmail, under Settings, for "2. When messages are accessed with POP" I have "delete Gmail's copy" selected. Thunderbird's "leave message on server" option is not checked.

Yes you can. I do it.

My guess is that something's gone wrong with your settings.

 checkmark

I've used Gmail with both Outlook and Thunderbird and it works like a charm. If for any reason you'd still need to access your mail from the web, I'd suggest you select "archive Gmail's copy" instead. Keeps the inbox clean but you can still read your messages anytime.
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.
