How Long Do You Leave Your PC On?

Sun Sep 23, 2007 11:27 pm

Well the title says it all. So just tell me when your PC is on. Today was the first time when I actually left my PC on the whole night so that me and my friend could fly to RAAJ from KLAX. Do any of you leave your computer on and go away while autopilot takes you to your destination?

I don't have any flightsim software, so that'd be a no. But I have fallen asleep while some movie or so was playing and also left the PC running for long downloads.

Mine is on almost permanently, it's my only source of music, movies, and porn. I leave it on overnight for virus scans, disk defragmenting, and to download even more music, movies, and porn.  Smile

It's usually on from the time I get up in the morning to when I go to sleep (including when I'm at work), so that'd be about 16 hours a day. I used to have it on 24/7, but as I have a computer which can handle standby mode in a decent way (ie. a Mac  Smile), I don't need it anymore.

My two desktop G4s are on permanently and have been for 2 years now, they run as iTunes servers. My powerbook has a rest once a week, but is on almost permanently otherwise, as I find it irritating to have to go through the trouble of turning off and on.

Depends... anything from 4 hours on a school day to a full 14, 15 hours on a weekend. I don't spend all of that time at the PC though, sometimes it's doing FS flights or torrenting stuff.

About 8 hours. But, I usually set the power saver so that it could turn off the monitors after 30 minutes, go on standby 15 minutes later, and hibernate in the next 15. Same with my laptop. Some programs, I think Real Player, doesn't allow my comp to go to standby, but it does let it turn off the monitor. I used to leave my laptop on for hours on end, then one day, the motherboard melted. I was pissed. So my newer laptop now has its own cooling mat and a vornado, considering how hot it gets. Not to mention that the temperature here never gets below 70F. My PC sits by the window to catch a cool breeze when I use it. I have never properly turned off my computers in the past couple of weeks, other than to restart after downloading some stuff.

I hardly ever turn off my laptop (my sole computer at the moment). I just put it into either standby or hibernate mode when I step away from the computer. It probably gets turned off all the way once a week or so.

Monday through Friday, usually between 5-6 hours (Usually from the time I get home from work until right before I go to bed), but on the weekends, more along the lines of 15 hours a day. During the weekends, I may turn it off if I'm going to be gone for any length of time, but typically I will leave it on from the time I wake up until right before I go to bed.

I did that once for a flight from Manchester UK- Phuket. I set the heading via FSNAV, when i woke up..i was about 500 miles off course heading due west. What a waste of time it was.

Generally my laptop is on all day, but turned off at night as it starts to overheat.

My desktop at home gets turned off when I go to sleep @ night or when I leave for work. When I am not on the road, my laptop at work is on, basically from 8am - 7pm.

In essence: no computer at work or at home is left on overnight.

I leave my computer on most of the day when I am at home. I turn it off during the night.

I happen to do music streaming from far distant lands, Hawaiian or Tahitian radio stations come right into my home through the Internet or other stations with other music styles from other countries. It's neat!  Smile

My computer does not like to turn back on for 48-72 hours after I turn it off. Since I pretty much have to use it every day for research and papers, it is on 24/7 and has been since the third day of school (we lost power the Saturday before 2nd year of law school started and my laptop didn't turn back on until late Tuesday night).

24/7, and yes I've been known to 'aim and forget' on FS9 during long flights - get to altitude, 'aim' at your destination, enable the autopilot and go to work, go to sleep, etc - and land 8-14 hours later.

I have two running next to each other. The more powerful machine, running Vista, does not go off. The lesser machine, running XP, is only turned on when needed for iTunes, a secondary monitor for a game, or extra capacity for whatever application.

Last year it only got turned off when I went abroad or went home, that was in University owned accommodation where bills were included in the rent. This year, where I'm in a house with three mates and we're footing the 'leccy bill jointly, it gets turned off even whilst we cook the dinner, or take a jog etc... It's also better for the environment, and until I get back to Spain to reclaim my joystick from the house there, I can't play FS anyway  grumpy

Work PC used to be on 24/7 since it was the one controlling the ticket and itinerary printers, so I never turned it off when going home in case anyone needed to print something... of course, the last person leaving the office didn't bother switching it off. Now that I got a new PC and the printer controllers stayed with the old one, most it stays on is 11 hours (yes, I've stayed in the office that long!  eek  )

Home PC is never left unattended while on; that is, if it is on, there is someone working on it. Though back in the times when mom, my brother and I had all college homework due for the next day, the PC could easily be on for 24 hours straight...  Silly
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Usually I leave my computer on 24 hours a day. I often fall asleep watching an episode of that '70s show, and I like the sound of the computer running when I fall asleep anyway. I am consistently downloading, and I am usually on MSN 24/7, as I like to be contactable, even when I'm asleep. I turn my computer off I'm leaving the house for more than a day.

Desktop, I'd have to say probably 12 to 14 hours at the most. I'd never leave it running all night though.

Laptop is on for however long I need it, which these days is usually only about 10 minutes a day. That's long enough for the anti-virus to download and install updates.

My main system - XPS 720 - never shuts down unless the APC unit runs out of juice during a power outage. The two other file servers are pretty much 24/7 though I do occassionally shut them down if they aren't needed or I'm going to be away. Have another file server that is offline and just use it as a backup incase I ever need it. Notebook...its in stand by if I'm not using it, which is most of the time. It's mainly just used during storm chasing season, traveling, or I feel like working in the living room or outside.

We leave both our desktops on all the time. We shut them down if there's a bad thunderstorm crashing real close, or if we go out of town, but other than that, they've been on for years....

Desktop stays on except if I leave town. Laptop and handheld PC are only on when needed. Power bills aren't bas as the desktop goes into energy saver mode when left on for a while. We don't get storms as bad as back east, so power surges are not much of a concern here.

Same here, only reason why my computer is on at night, and if i do any FS longhual flights which I really dont see a point because flying is basically 5-10 of takeoff procedures and then 10-15 minutes of approach, dont see a reason why one should stare at the screen for 14 hours.

I leave my laptop on nearly all the time. Although I have recently started to turn it off when I go to work.

I used to have 2 pcs and a laptop at uni that were on 24/7. I had one box with linux and an FTP server on it (not saying what it hosted on there  Wink ), then my other pc ran 24/7 downloading and serving tv progs for my friends. The laptop was used in moderation for my uni work and used to go to lectures and labs with me everyday.

Laptop at work (which I rarely take home unless really needed) stays on basically all the time unless I'm on the road. Personal laptop is on only when I'm at home, so during the evenings and weekends mostly. It's using for storing and playing all types of media...haha. At college, my previous laptop was on for really long stretches, a couple of months at a time. We used it to stream movies/music over our inhouse LAN to other PCs and TV etc... Was a pretty sweet set-up!

My old PC used to be on 24/7 most days, as restarting or shutting it down would take ages.

Now I have a laptop for school and I turn it off every couple of days, for the night. All the other nights it is on hibernation.
