Crazy Finish In The Major Leagues

Fri Sep 28, 2007 3:59 am

Check out the standings - 4 days left (counting today) - and no division winners in the National League, and no home field advantage decided in the American League.

If I'm not mistaken, the Yankees could (though unlikely) still not only win the division, but home-field advantage. Added to that - any of the 4 teams going into today could still get home-field. That's nuts!

The Dbacks could get knocked out of their division lead by 2 different teams, and even out of the wild-card by up to 4 teams (Mets, Phillies - whichever doesn't win their division - as well as the Rockies and Padres).

The Cubs, the Dbacks and Mets are all doing their best to see whose fans can have the most heart trouble. I think the Cubs fortunately lose on that one, though - we've all been let down enough to see something like this coming.  crazy

Here is a breakdown of some odds.

Personally, I say Cubs all the way. After that, I hope the Rockies get into the playoffs (I owe a friend a ballgame out there, and seeing the Cubs and Rockies in the 1st round should do nicely).

Also, I think the Rockies have the best shot (currently) at getting a playoff spot - even though they're the "worst" among the remaining wildcard contenders (the Cubs and Brew crew don't count - neither of them can win the wildcard - it's all about the division between those two). The Rockies have won 10 in a row and face the inconsistent Dodgers.

And the Brew Crew have to play the Padres - who have something to play for - so much the better for the Cubs.  mischievous

Too bad the Nationals didn't start their latest winning streak a bit earlier...  Yeah sure

But they are playing spoiler very nicely. Next victim: Philadelphia. Is Atlanta actually eliminated? How brutal would that be if the Nats swept both the Mets and the Phillies allowing the Braves to sneak in!

Good to see the Mariners took game 2 from the Tribe last night, evening up the Red Sox and Indians records. But with four left, and CLE playing one more against SEA and three against Kansas Sh*tty (no offense to the city, but the local nine do suck), and the Sox playing four against the Twins, it's gonna be hard to secure home field in BOS.

Good races though. Nice to see the Mets trying to play the part of the big BOS collapse for a change, hey 'ROCtongue

Well, Micah Owings was exactly what the Diamondbacks needed this afternoon, starting in place of Brandon Webb due to rain in Pittsburgh. 8-0 Diamondbacks.. Besides pitching 6.1 innings of shutout ball, Owings was 4 for 4 with three doubles and 3 RBI's raising his slugging pct. to over .700, (batting avg .339) not bad for a pitcher. Magic number for a playoff slot is now 2. Pressure on the Padres and Rockies to win tonight.

Edit for updated batting avg..

Holy Toledo, the Philles by beating the Braves tonight (sorry about that AirKas and DLK) and the Mets losing, means with three games to go, its all tied up. The Mets looked like they had this division wrapped up back on Memorial Day.

Except for the Cubs losing, all I have to say is - friggin' hilarious!!!

The Brew Crew went down, ensuring the Cubs bad luck won't kill them - yet.

The Indians are down, the Red Sox lost and the Yankees won - the Yanks are still alive for the division and home field. The A.L. doesn't matter much to me - all we need to see now, basically, are pairings and the East winner.

The D'backs won, the Padres won (again, sorry Milwaukee  biggrin  ) and the Rockies are up - I still say the Rockies are in the playoffs.

The other bad taste in my mouth is the Cardinals winning - I don't care much for Philly advancing - they belong with Cleveland in the basement of major sports.

Why does it seem the Yankees are always playing the Devil Rays lately? No wonder they won a million games since June, playing Tampa Bay and Baltimore every day will help any team's record.

Now in a real division (NL West) every team but Barry Bonds has a chance at a winning record.

Call it 11 straight wins for the unstoppable Colorado Rockies, who have racked up 2 sweeps of the Dodgers (4 game sweep @ home & 3 game sweep in LA) plus a very impressive and crucial road sweep of the Padres as part of this streak...huge series comes up this weekend vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks in the friendly (and sure to be jam-packed) confines of Coors Field...the Rocks could jump into the division lead if they continue their current streak...also, some losses from the Padres, Phillies, and Mets would be greatly appreciated...

Go Braves!!

Okay, now that's outta the way.....

It's conceivable to have a five-way tie in the NL. Arizona, Colorado, NY, Phil., and San Diego could all finish with the same record. It would take four days of tie-breaker games to set the post-season match-ups.

That, along with the AL East, we have 4 out of six divisions not settled with less than a week to go. How long has it been since that has happened?

The Rockies win last night over the Dodgers prevented the possibility of Arizona, Colorado, Mets, Philadephia, and San Diego finishing with the same record. For example if the Rockies sweep the D-Backs then they will have 1 more win, if they take two out of three they will fall short by one: 90 vs. 89.

Plenty happened tonight:

-Cubs win the NL Central: They beat the Reds, and the Brewers lost to the Padres. The Brewers are now elliminated.
-Diamondbacks clinch a playoff spot: They beat the Rockies. The Rockies are now out of the NL West race, still alive for the Wild Card
-Phillies take over sole possession of 1st place, beating the Nationals. Mets lose to the Marlins.
-Red Sox win the AL East, as they beat the Twins and the Yankees lose to the Orioles.

Yankees blew a 3-run lead in the 9th, and Rivera blew it. A 3-run triple in the bottom of the 9th tied it.

Meanwhile, C.C. Sabathia won #19, and may have wrapped up the Indians first Cy Young since 1974 (Gaylord Perry). Although if Carmona gets a start Sunday, and he wins, and wins the ERA title, he could take it as well. And the Playoffs are set in the AL: the Red Sox vs. Angels, and the Yankess vs. Indians in the ALDS. GO TRIBE!

If Peavy wins the Cy Young in the NL, it will be the Padres first Cy Young since you guess it Gaylord Perry.

ESPN didn't report it, but with the BoSox win tonight, and the Indians loss, the BoSox get home field in the AL throughout post-season. I'm pretty pissed at Tribe manager Eric Wedge, for sitting down so many starters this week when there was still something to play for. I think he didn't think home field throughout was that important. If the Indians meet the Red Sox, the Tribe only gets 3 home games now. Plus, the Indians can't pick which day they start the ALDS, which may torpedo their chance to use Sabathia and Carmona twice against New York.

How about John Maine coming through today? He pitched a one hitter against the Marlins. The Mets won the game 13-0. They finally showed some fire today!

That just tried to explain this on Baseball Tonight. The Mets and Phillies would play a one game playoff and the winner would win the east. The Rockies and Padres would play one game to decide the west. The losers of those two games would then play another one game play off to determine the wild card winner.

What a finish!.....never expected the Mets to give back 8 games in 17 days...

And now the Padres travel to Colorado for a one game playoff to see who wins the NL wild card...

Looking forward to an entertaining playoff...the Angels/BoSox series should be a classic.

And after 162+ games of baseball, the NL Wild Card comes down to one inning. Padres and Rockies are tied going to the 9th.

EDIT: Now going to extras. As a fan of the game, it doesn't get much better than this.

And Thatcher struck out Hawpe with 2 on and 2 out. Time for the 10th. Who would have thought that Peavy would get his ass handed to him and the Padres would catch up on muscle. The Padres have a much better bullpen than Colorado, and have used far fewer pitchers at this point. They still have Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman in the Pen, while the Rockies have used both Fuentes and Corpas.

Ok, now why in the world do you pinch hit for Mike Cameron in this situation? I realize it is righty v. righty, but you are talking about a proven MLB player being yanked for a rookie from the 40 man roster. Oh well, I don't like either team, so whatever.

And Barrett is out. Looks like we will have a batter for Herges, then Torrealba and Sullivan. I wonder if they keep Thatcher in for what will likely be a righty, another righty and then a lefty?

Well, if Thatcher makes it though the inning, you are looking at Giles, Hairston and a batter for Thatcher. Giles could put a charge into one. If anyone gets on, the Padres' savior, Adrian Gonzalez will be up.

13th inning. Unbelievable. Rockies have only needed 1 swing for 4 innings now. If Herges makes it unscathed through the 13th, I think the Rockies have a great chance to capitalize.

And now, just before I post, it's Julio. Might as well pencil in the Padres against the Phillies.

Hairston hit it perfectly... 8-6 now. Lets see if we can get some more insurance, and then get Hoffman out there and close it out. Even he won't blow a save if the Padres have a 2 or 3 run lead.

I know. Trevor is the best, and you can always guarantee 40+ saves from him every year, and I have the utmost respect for him. It's just that he has a history of blowing 5-6 games a year, and always during the worst times.

Don't worry, I'm totally confident about him tonight. He'll do fine. I can finally breathe normally again.

I know. I don't expect him to be perfect, but I just wish when he blows a save, it isn't always an important game. Blow a game in April or something, not September 29th, that's all.

At any rate, I'm still quite confident that he'll get the job done tonight, EVEN THOUGH he just gave up a run here. Thank God for that extra insurance run we have.
