I Just Whacked A 'possum!

Sun Sep 30, 2007 2:46 pm

So it's 12:40am here in Texas, and my beagle started howling. Turns out, there was a 'possum on the fence. After putting the dog inside, I took my tree trimming pole and whacked him off that fence! There was a nice thud to go along with it. Maybe he won't come back now!   My dog also finds rats, armadillos, and snakes...usually at 3:00am when I have to shut him up! An owl has been keeping the squirrel population down, thankfully. Might actually get some pecans out of my tree this year! Anyone else have annoying vermin pay them a visit?

Question: There is an opossum in my yard. What do I do?

Answer: Nothing. Leave it alone. If it is injured or orphaned then read the “Found an Orphaned or Injured Opossum?” section. Otherwise, enjoy watching wildlife in your own backyard! Opossums are beneficial: eating the harmful, unwanted pests around your home such as snails, slugs, spiders, cockroaches, rats, mice and snakes. Think of the opossum as your free gardener. The opossum is known as “Nature’s Little Sanitation Engineer” for a good reason!

Pshhh. No one in Texas believes that. If I was out of city limits, it might have met a piece of lead from my .22! We really are rednecks down here....one of the few stereotypes with some truth to it! My great grandmother would get up in the middle of the night and shoot racoons that dared venture onto her property. Imagine an 85 year-old lady in her nightgown coming out of the door with a side-by-side and letting 'em have it! Craziness! Big grin

Question: My dog kills opossums. What can I do?

Answer: Keep the dog indoors at night. This way the dog will not be able to injure or kill the opossums. Take the dog outside on a leash to do his “business”. If not possible to keep the dog indoors, then confine the dog to the garage or a run from dusk to dawn. If again not possible, then place a few large PVC pipes (8 inch diameter, 5-6 feet in length) in the yard. This will provide the opossum with a place to escape, should an attack occur. Remove pet food and other attractants from your yard to encourage opossums to move on.

Time to get some PVC pipe!  Yeah sure

I left my sliding glass door open one night, I got up in the morning to find a small(baby?) possum laying dead in my kitchen(attacked by my cats so I thought). Thought to my self I'll put it in the trash after my shower, and fully dressed. Got a shower, and dressed ready to put the poor thing in the trash, but it was gone----was playing possum with me.

A swift pop to the head with my 3 iron normally takes care of them. They tend to congregate around my back garden from June to August.

Nothing wrong with taking care of vermin and working on your swing a little. If you hit it crisp, I bet you could drive the head a good 200 yards with a driver. Hit the club on the ear and it flies in a wicked slice.  Wink

I've not missed one of the little fuckers yet, but I haven't decapitated one either. Every one has ended up rigid and lifeless within nanoseconds of that sweet spot hitting their cranium. Hey Shannon! Long time no talk! Yep, anything that makes my dog howl is a pest. Then I have to get out of bed, (usually around 3:00am  Sad ) and put him inside. I had him neutered too early, so he screams bloody murder instead of the nice deep bay that beagles should have. Big grin People are always asking If I'm hurting him whent hey hear him "howl."

Hmmmm...I suppose you wouldn't like to hear my target practice at the creek stories? Turtles are easy kills, gars are harder, and carp are almost impossible! And try shooting a dang water moccasin...they are so thin and fast! My grandpa would just skip the shooting part and beat the crap out of 'em with a stick! He killed mice in his Colorado cabin with a pistol.
My dad and grandparents lived on farms and ranches for the most part, so the gun was the taker of life. If the dog got too sick to stand, bye bye doggy. Vet bills were too expensive for a dog that you picked up off the road. We definitely don't support the suffering of animals, so we just take 'em out quick!

Same here in Florida. Possums and armadillos are the #1 road kill. And I think armadillos are a little bit stupider(is that a word?), They want to jump just as you are driving over them, even though you put them right in the center of your car. If they wouldn't jump they would survive. Plus they smell bad when cooking on the exhaust system.  vomit

Except that it's not for no apparent reason. A few years ago, one got in to a fight with my neighbour's cat, bit it, and gave it rabies. The poor cat had to be put down. I don't want that to happen to my cats. Ergo, the possum dies first. They are pests. They are vermin. The should die.

I've never had to deal with the possum, but the raccoon is quite the pain in the ass up here in Canada. I've been known to chase them away from the garbage cans. It's come to the point where I have to put out the garbage in the morning instead of the night before or those raccoons come up from the ravine and have a field day. I've never tried the 3-iron, but a brick works well.

They can also be quite vicious. I cornered one by accident in a stairwell once and they have very nasty looking teeth. My roommate wanted me to shoot it but I didn't think shooing a opossum with a 45 would go over too well with the Columbus Ohio Police, us being on the Ohio State campus at the time.  Smile

Understood...sort of. My sympathy pretty much stops with these vermin. Anything as nasty or nastier than a 'possum is generally considered "target practice" down here. I look at swatting a 'possum as having the same amount of cruelty as swatting a fly consists of. They're both pests. Call it cruelty, call it murder, call it disturbing, call it whatever you like, but 9 out of 10 people around here call it normal or even advisable.

Quoting Huskyaviation (Reply 28):

Yep. Why does non-subsistence hunting exist? It's all about the kill, with the meat as an added bonus.

Possums down under are very different to your ones. They can be quite noisy at night running around on roofs but they're not that bad. We have one that lives in our garage and would never dare to kill it. At my stepdads other house the babies come right up the house and have staring matches with the dog.

We only have a couple of mice around the place although with summer coming and it getting warmer fast, we'll probably have some deadly snakes creeping around the place.

Your 'possums look pretty cool. Most of ours are hideous, having the appearance of an overgrown rat. And when they bare their teeth at you.....  crazy  I had one behind my shed that had a large wound in its back....probably hit by a car. I got animal control to come by and pick it up. Some rats hang out in that shed too. Every now and then my dog will catch one, but I prefer my trapping methods: they kept stealing the bait, so I glued it down. They would try to pull it off of the trap, try harder, then it's over. I once caught two in one trap! (conventional spring/bar trap). Luckily, with me being in the city, I don't have to deal with coyotes and skunks!

My dog has killed a couple rabbits and one squirrel. Two times my dog has found a wood chuck and gets bitten. And my dog has chased a turkey and its babies out of my yard. There are also mice that run next to the fence and my dog runs all the way down the fence.  Silly

At my cabin when my dad and I catch sheep head (or freshwater drum) we hit it with an oar into the water, usually a pelican is waiting for us to throw a dead fish in the water.

Total BS. A possum doesn't antagonize you like a fly does

We've had possums in the yard at 3am and the dog starts barking. Since I'm already up to let her out in the first place, I just go out there and drag her in. I've gone out there with a flashlight to see what she's barking at, and her and the possum are taunting each other, squatting down on their front legs. No harm , no foul!

Ergo, the possum dies first.

Maybe someone should try doing the same to you

I took my tree trimming pole and whacked him off that fence! There was a nice thud to go along with it.

I'll send my uncle right away! He would pop intruding cats with a .22 if they kept coming back into his yard!  Big grin He's the same one who blew a marmot inside-out with his 30-30. Once he was describing to me how the irragation pipes on the ranch would sometimes get clogged with chipmunks....if a sprinkler head wasn't working, it usually meant that some chipmunk had a really bad day! And I quote: "That's quite a process- pulling a chipmunk out of an 1/8" hole." This just goes to prove that living on a ranch can make you look at things quite differently. Some people say "poor chipmunk!" and the ranchers say "One of them **** chipmunks got in the pipe again!"

Always amazes me that there are people out there so twisted that they would rather see a human die then some animal.

Erm, it's not as if this was a situation "either the human dies or the animal". Here there's just an animal sitting somewhere and people get a kick out of killing it... and it's rather amazing that so many people actually think that's cool. Shows how much some value life...

LOL, what are you talking about? When did anyone say that? None of the things people have been describing in this thread involved anything remotely close to risking a human life.

Wanton killing of animals just for the "thrill" of it is what I find disturbing...talking about how mutilated the animal was by your big, bad gun. Isn't that how serial killers usually start?

If you have a dog and there is a wild animal around, bring your dog inside. It's a pretty simple concept. It's much more stupid to allow your dog to attack that animal and risk the dog getting hurt.

Trust me, if you had grown up in Texas, you wouldn't think twice about any of what has been said here. It's old hat. Different culture, different "morals."

For small favors we can be ever so thankful. For our European colleagues it helps to think of Texas as a foreign country, because there's no competent evidence the Republic of Texas ever went out of business.

I wasn't talking about killing a human, although I realize it looks that way due to the quoted text.

I was hoping someone would whack Skywatch off a fence for being such an a**hole to animals.

Maybe a copy of this thread should be sent to the ASPCA in AUS to see if they advocate whacking possums.
