If You Could Live In Any Decade...

Tue Oct 02, 2007 1:00 am

I've always thought about this, so I figured I'd pose the question: If you could live in any decade you wanted, what decade would you choose?

For me it would have to be the 1940's. I just love everything about that time period. Small towns, where everyone knows everyone, the cars, the planes, the sincerity of America back then, and the music. My wife and I have xm radio and we have it hooked up to our stero in the den of our apartment and we will sometimes just turn on the 40's channel and listen for hours.

Feel free to post away, what decade and why you would choose it. Happy posting!

If I only count Western civilization, then:

Sadly, I was still shitting in my pants and drinking milk by the time that decade was over.  Sad

Being a traitor to my growing-up decades of the 60s and 70s, I'd love to be able to turn the clock back to January the first . . . . . 1990! I loved that decade, the music, the clothes, everything. That was when the fun REALLY started for me.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Express1 and Toast above would run screaming back to the noughties after just a week in those two decades. No home computers, no mobile phones, you had to have money to travel, etc etc. How did we live thorough those years?

Sure, one always tends to idealize the long gone past. However, I grew up in the 80s, without PCs and mobile phones. There were only a handful of TV channels, and CDs were an expensive novelty. I love my internet, but I honestly could live without it, I think.

I should have added "the 70s, but only in the USA". America was at the time IMO the most progressive, open and free society on Earth. Now Ireland in the 70s, yikes!  Wink

Travel was indeed a problem at the time, costly and entangled in red tape.  Sad However, you could hitchhike safely from Amsterdam to Kabul with other stoned hippies, sampling Central Asia's women at every caravanserai...  drunk

How the times have changed, for much better AND much worse at the same time!

I would relive the 80's(only if I have the knowledge that I have now). It was fun the first time, so the second time would be even better.

Fresh Prince

Full House

Doug/Rugrats

Windows 3.1

Windows 95

Super Nintendo

Nintendo 64

Lime green and hot pink clothing

Less political correctness

Not as much "celeberity gossip"

Owning a premium car with not one, but two airbags

HUGE cell phones

Play the stock market bubble to my advantage

Dunk-a-roo's

Airlines still cared about you somewhat

If you think THAT was bad, you should have been here in the 80s (the first half anyway). The country was quickly going down the tubes and people were leaving the country in droves.

Now that would have been a thing to do, although I'd have to leave the Central Asian women to you! I remember paying the equivalent of a week's wage to fly to London in the 70s. Even with taxes included, I could buy up to a dozen return flights to London for a week's wage now.

How times change indeed!

Definitely the 80's. I love that decade and even if I was still a toddler back then, the 80's were the best time of my life, plus the music was much better than the crap that is being shown on MTV or played on the radio, 727s, DC-10s, the L-1011 and Russian planes were in their heyday, and another reason is because PA was still around.

Full House

You know those are both still on in syndication. I regularly watch Full House on ABC Fam at 12est and again at 3est. Loved that show growing up.

Always wanted to be a soilder in WW2, i know there were mass casualties and things. But i find it such an interesting time. Also, the Gulf in 91, but i was only 1 then, so not much chance remembering much of it.

id have to go either with the 1920s or 1980s, the culture of partying and excess is too alluring...shame they both ended in economic downturn. growing up in the 90s though really was quite enjoyable.

The late 50's to early 60's for me. Or the 80's would be another awesome time to go back into. I was a youth in the 80's of course though. I would not mind any era where sexual indulgance is the name of the game though.

I'd like to go back to New York City in the 1970's when it really used to be fun city!
