Major Mining Accident In South Africa

Wed Oct 03, 2007 9:29 pm

Very disturbing news coming from Johannesburg this evening...

More than 3,000 workers are trapped deep underground in a South African gold mine after an accident blocked a deep shaft, officials have said.

The 2.2km (1.4mile) shaft was blocked near the bottom, trapping the workers.

Horrifying, I hope they all get out ok.

From CNN:

" The mineworkers' union said a water pipe burst and probably caused the shaft to collapse, The Associated Press reported.

The lift is expected to be functioning in two hours, but it could take more than 10 hours to evacuate all the miners, according to the press association.

Mine management is in contact with the workers, who have access to water and air, the press association reported. "

I cannot imagine anything more terrifying than being stuck 1 1/2 miles underground, and not knowing if you have enough air to survivie until you can be rescued...if they can even find you.

Ghastly line of work, if you ask me.

Yeah, mining is a tough profession, and I have a lot of respect for those who do it.

Glad to hear that all of the miners are going to be ok.
