The Worst Football Dive Ever?

Thu Oct 04, 2007 6:11 am

I have seen this video about a dive from the Milan goalkeeper Dida tduring a match against Celtic.
What are your thoughts on this. Have you seen any worse dives or better ones?

Isn't that how you play soccer, have someone contact you in the slightest, then go down like you've been shot?

I remember that one occasion, during the 2002 World Cup, someone just slightly touched Ronaldinho on the head and the guy fell down pretending he was hit badly in the leg. He should have been ejected from that.

Bastards who dive, like Dida, should be banned from football. They're responsible for ruining the sport.

Absolutely NOT! In fact, there has been a bigger push now more than ever to severly punish divers, not just on the national federation side, but also on the side of continental football federations like UEFA. The German football federation DFB has itself started a new zero-tolerance policy against diving (or Schwalben as we call them), in which, even if the game is over, if there's a suspicion of a dive, a certain part of a game is reviewed to see if the player was found to be diving or not. If the player is caught diving, he gets an automatic 2 game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct. Others should follow the DFB suit and start such a zero-tolerance policy as well.

I would agree, I quite enjoy watching my university team play or my cousins team, or pretty much anything amateur. But when it comes to watching professional soccer I'd have to be paid to go.

Celtic should certainly be punished for the fan invading the pitch (and doubtless will be), but so should Dida for such blatant cheating. I mean, he went the whole way, stretchered off with an icepack on his face. Ridiculous. Ban him.

Yes, but it should only be a fine. Celtic fans tend to be some of the best supporters around, and to hit them hard for one eejit, would be unfair on the club.

I wouldn't be surprised if it'll be along the lines of playing the next game behind closed doors or something like that.

Totally agree. I mean, the "fan" hit him under his neck, so why did he need an ice pack on his face? And how come he mananged to start chasing the idiot before he realised he was hurt? It's reminiscent of the flare incident, which was ridiculous too.

After posting, i started looking around YouTube for some dives, and found some corkers.
My funniest/favourite dive i have seen is in this video. It's about 45 seconds in. Gets hit in the shin the ball, and the player falls to the ground clutching his head.

What about your favourite/funniest/most hated dives

Actually, you got it a bit confused: It was in the Turkey-Brazil game, that Rivaldo got a ball shot against his knee and then he fell over pretending he was hit in the face, the scene Flyboysp mentioned. And quite frankly, for pathetic dives like Rivaldo or now Dida, I would love to beat the sh!t out of those a$$holes. THEN they'd have a reason to lie on the floor wailing like the little pvssies they are.

Unfortunately, not all untrue these days. And how I hate these drama queens!

Solution for me: after every foul action that would include a card, a penalty and / or a freekick in the opponent's half, the ref should ask the victim if he pleas to have been fouled. If he replies yes, and video footage later on proves him to have lied or dived, the game should be ruled as 3-0 for the opponent team, plus the cheater should get a 5 game ban. Would end the acting quickly.

But that would be tough for Spanish and Italian clubs, of course...  Yeah sure

This wasn't something where the player or the referee was in direct danger, like that Denmark vs Sweden match a few months ago, when Herbert Fandel was forced to stop the game before stoppage time and the game was ruled a 3:0 for Sweden. As has been shown, Dida was playing the drama queen here. Yes, Celtic should be fined without the penalty having any effect on the outcome of the game, but Dida should be suspended as well. Given the gravity of the incident, I say he should get a 6 month suspension by UEFA and FIFA, so he doesn't smear the reputation of the Brazilian national team with his drama queen performance.

BTW: http://www.sport1.de/de/sport/artikel_1770439.html (German only)

According to that article, many AC Milan fans have expressed their outrage towards Dida's drama queen performance on the pitch. One of those fans says Dida has ruined the reputation of the club and they (the club) should take disciplinary action against him. A decision on whether the UEFA disciplinary committee will investigate the issue won't come until tomorrow.

the '02 dive of Rivaldo (shown in the video) was as pathetic as Dida's. What bugs me is that these guys are superstars who play for top clubs or national teams. They know there are at least a dozen cameras pointing at them ... so they really think no one's going to find out??

btw, about the video, the one of Cristano Ronaldo's that ended up in a pk is actually a very good dive. you need different angles and slow motion to see it was a dive at all!

That could work for the obvious, pathetic ones like Dida's but only for those cases, because many times players get a yellow card for diving when in fact the may have tripped or something because of the play itself, withou it being a foul. They don't always dive!

unfortunately this too is part of football

But right now, does it matter that everyone finds out? I mean, yes, they get abuse for being a cheat, but the authorities do sod all about it and it gets an opponent sent off. They'll only stop if FIFA or whoever clamp down so hard on it (six game ban etc) that it isn't worth it. In my view, a straight red card for diving would be a start. And the ability to retrospectively punish too.

Rather than messing aound during the actual games, the new Chief Executive of the SFA wants to punish divers after matches, using video evidence, for instances that the referee missed. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Diving should be punished not just with yellow and a review of the case for a possible further punishment, it should be punished with an immediate ejection.

Yup, that too. If the ref misses it and complaints about a possible dive come in, it must be reviewed immediately.

That's what the DFB in Germany is trying to do in the Bundesliga (that's the new zero-tolerance policy I initially mentioned). If a player has been proven to dive, that player responsible gets an immediate 2 game suspension.

Calling italians stupid is pretty offensive, but I'm pretty sure no Italian, including myself, care too much since no matter all the crying (yes, crying, because you can tell it's not a penalty after 4 replays, it wasn't obvious during the play itself), Italy is the world champion. besides, no one mentions that Matrerazzi got an unfair red card in that game, remember that?

Considering the times he have kicked players in the face and done other nasty stuff during matchs, and has gotten away with it or barely a yellow card, he deserves it.

No way. Materazzi is one of the few Italian players you don't see diving. And he also contributes to less diving in the
Serie A by acually tackling his opponent like the above video. When tackled by Materazzi, you don't need to dive.....  Wink

UEFA has finally decided to start a disciplinary trial against Dida. The decision came today as UEFA was awaiting final reports of the match, along with that, an additional report by referee Markus Merk. Celtic FC will also be investigated for security flaws that allowed that fan to get on the pitch.

Yeah, specially when he goes "matrix" and throws kicks in the air.

Now seriously, he is an a**hole and a brainless brute. Just the fact that he never aims for the ball but for the players should be enough to ban him for life from playing football. He should be playing hockey.
And the fact that italians seem to love him, its quite telling.

If Italy wants to play like this, go rebuild the Coliseum and reinstate gladiator battles.

Say what you like about American football, but at least we don't have divers.  Smile

What about those quaterbacks who run a quaterback draw and decide to slide instead of being a man and taking the tackle?  Wink

Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy watching the NFL.

True, but at least they're not trying to fake injury.

Point taken, but being the purist that I am, even a quaterback should be man enough to take a hit from a 300 lbs player if necessary.  Wink

Now seriously, he is an a**hole and a brainless brute. Just the fact that he never aims for the ball but for the players should be enough to ban him for life from playing football. He should be playing hockey.
And the fact that italians seem to love him, its quite telling.

Materazzi and player-types like him are the cure for divers.

Divers like Gilardino, Christiano Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Robben, Diouf and "The diving king" Inzaghi should be ashamed of themselves. Materazzi sometimes crosses the line, and gets his share of bookings, but you will not see him dive or cheat.

I prefer footballplayers giving everything on the pitch, like Matterazzi. Even if that means crossing the line sometimes.

Divers like the above mentioned should try NFL, where you get to wear full kevlar body armor, and will be able to stop for a rest every twnty second.

Sorry. I actually like Italians. Its just.......Italian players are diving too much

No problem  Smile

About Materazzi, I think he's a major ass, but I also agree that he won't let you dive if you try to pass him. He'll kick the crap out of you first!
But, with similar caracteristics, but a much "cleaner" player, who I admire is Gattuso. Evn though he's not the most talented player around, he gives 120% every single game and is rough but not a criminal.

And he's so in love with Zinédine Zidane's sister, that he got his ass kicked for it when he told Zizou that he could become his brother in law.  stirthepot
