ESPN: Yanks Lose To Tribe Today, Torre's Gone

Sun Oct 07, 2007 8:55 pm

Which in one sense, I can see, but in another sense, is just stupid.

Maybe it is time the Yankees have a new manager. After a while, it's simply time to move on. But this guy did a great job rallying the Bombers in the 2nd half of the season, and still is one of the better managers in the game.

That being said, I hope the Tribe let's Steinbrenner make that decision today.  Big grin

I think Torre would of been gone even if the Yankees won. Remember last season how long it took Torre to decide weather or not to come back this year?

If not today then next game. The Yankees will not win 3 games against this good Indians team.

George shouldn't have made this comment - everyone knew that Torre was gone after this series if he didn't win, and it detracts from the game to have that extra side-story running.

As far as Torre goes, I have no qualms with him - he is a great manager, and he has done an incredible amount for the Yankees. But this is New York, and three consecutive pathetic Division Series performances doesn't cut it. It the Yanks don't show up tonight, it will be time to move on.

I would agree. He's in the last year of his contract, and the stress of managing for the Yankees can take its toll on anyone.

And it put even more pressure on Torre.

How responsible is Torre in reality for their success? I mean it's obvious that their success and Steinbrenner's (sp?) checkbook are directly related. When you buy any player you want whenever you want and managed to get some of the best ones, how much does a manager do?

Probably, I am amazed he put with George for as long as he did......Hopefully he doesn't turn into the next Billy Martin.

The Yankees are about the biggest arguement for a salary cap in baseball I can think of.

I really hope CLE wins today. Though if they do, that will leave me with 3 teams which I wouldn't mind seeing win the WS: Arizona, Colorado, and Cleveland. I'd love to see Arizona win it though! Big grin

No, they're not. It's been repeatedly proven, by the Yankees and by other teams, that just buying good players doesn't make a winning team.

Too bad none of those will win it.  Wink

Actually I would say Torre probably has the hardest managing job in baseball. He has to make that many high dollar egos play together as a team and win. Something not easily done when everyone is obsessing over their own stats instead of doing what is right for the team.

Not to mention he's had to deal with the NY media for 12 seasons now. That will take some years off anyone's life.

I'm no fan of the Yankees or their payroll, however George opened up the checkbook after the 2000 series win. Since then, the Yanks have lost 2 World Series and have made a habit of early playoff exists. The Marlins beat them in what, '03 with a pathetic payroll. The White Sox and Cardinals won the Series with middle of the road payrolls. The mets have opened up the checkbook as have t he Angels...they haven't won Jack. When the Yanks won their 4 straight Series titles, they did it with a lot of home grown talent and shrewd free agent signings and trades.

The best Dodger teams were also born of home-grown talent (rookies of the year up the wazoo)...for years they were known for having the best farm system going. These days it may not be the top system, but it's close. You can't say they've done jack in the years of trying to buy a title (1 playoff GAME win since their last WS title in 1988).
