A Simple Question For The American Readers

Wed Oct 10, 2007 12:42 pm

Having watched programmes like...

Monster House. Overhaulin' etc. Why is it the people who are on the recieving end say the same thing. Over and over and over again.

"Oh my God!" "OH MY GOD!" "I don't believe it! OH MY GOD!"

Why not; "Jesus Christ! You're taking the p*ss. No uffing way!"

I find the repetitive OMG so damned shallow. Just wondering.
Exactly how long is a drastic measure?

Well first of all any cussing would be edited out. Secondly, people aren't generally thinking about what they say when they just had a bombshell (such as a new house) dropped on them. So basically, don't think about it too much and just try and ignore it.

And because

over here means you're urinating on yourself.

Honestly, I try not to curse in public anymore. I used to have a bit of a potty mouth and was told a couple of times that it made me look uneducated and not very classy.

Besides, I've seen plenty of "Oh My God's" on shows like the BBC version of What Not To Wear (and not dubbed, either.)

Cussing and swearing is a shortcut from rational thinking. Plus knowing that you're on camera, you tend to over-react to anything, if you're emotionally outgoing. Personally, I only cuss when I'm angry about a situation I can no longer control, which is not often. And anger is just a temporary emotion. I don't swear in every-day's conversation either because I don't need foul words to make my point. I let my voice's volume do that.  Wink
People using foul words & swear-ed wordings are just attention whores, but they turn me off completely.

I have never understood that expression. It makes no sense to me.

I don't get that phrase either; I'm sure I'm with the majority of Americans.

Well, there's your first mistake...  Wink

Actually, there are people here who say that kind of thing all the time. Especially the "Oh. My. God." types who should be taken to the edge of a very high cliff and then smacked on the back of the head with a cricket bat for irritating everyone else intensely. They can line up next to all those people who finish every sentence with a rising inflexion so that everything they say becomes a question? They're really annoying?  grumpy

How is that "shallow"? Predictable, yes. No more shallow that "you're taking the p*ss", whatever that is supposed to mean.

I prefer "Holy Toledo!" personally. Seems like fewer people use this nowadays, no one knows what the hell it means (including me), and it's not offensive to anyone.

Let's not forget "Jimminy Freakin' Crickets" or "Jumpin' Jehosophat" whilst we're at it.  Wink

Well their is a innate human sense of a god ... most people have a sense that they are in the care of some god .. or force or higher being. In a shocking scenario it is curious how their immediate reaction is to recognise this force. The recognition of the "force" or being in their life is a way to acknowledge that their feelings have reached the level of the unexplained or the unexplainable. It become a safety outlet for their emotions I guess..

Kind of like the news anchor who watched the second aircraft go into the WTC... I believe he or she said "OH MY GOD".

All that aside it gets pretty annoying ,, but that is why I do not watch those shows I guess.

I suspect they are being coached by the same producers
