Where Would You Spend "New Year's" In Europe?

Thu Oct 11, 2007 5:31 pm

Hi,

I'll be in London, UK from the 21st of December until the 2nd of January, with my girlfriend. I don't want to spend New Year's in UK, so I would love to go somewhere else in Europe. I'd fly out on the 31st and come back on the 1st. I can't go earlier because my girlfriend has a show (Disney on Ice) on the 30th and I can't stay longer, because I have to head back to Canada. So, for 2 days / 1 night stay, where would you recomend I go?

Here are some of my thoughts:

Bucharest, Romania
Budapest, Hungary
Prague, Czech Republic
Vilnius, Lithuania
Berlin, Germany
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Athens, Greece
Copenhagen, Denmark
Paris, France
--------------------------------------------

Any other suggestions? The reason I picked major cities / capitals is because I want direct flights. I don't want to spend my time in an airplane / airport. I fly enough for work / pleasure. Big grin

Thanks,

Vio

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Definitely Amsterdam if you are interested in massive private fireworks.
A lot of small parties etc. going on, but nothing centrally planned.
Be aware that public transport will stop operation at around 1800h on 31-DEC, so go for a hotel within walking distance of the city.

Quoting Vio (Thread starter):
Berlin, Germany

The massive crowd around Brandenburger Tor is rather stricly shepperd and is not allowed to burn any fireworks. For my taste there are much too many people around.

no idea about the other cities.

Paris. Definitely, Paris. No other city is as romantic, especially at night.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Paris, no contest. And you don't have to bother about flying, you can walk down the Champs-Elysées 3 hours after leaving your place in London. Take the Eurostar. Cheap and no delay/baggage loss snafu guaranteed.

Quoting Pilotaydin (Reply 3):

A great choice as well. Istanbul is one of my favorites, and people there sure know how to party.

Krakow, Poland is also a fantastic partying destination.

Barcelona would be high on my list, too. As a matter of fact, any large city in Spain on Noche Vieja is something you have to experience once in your life.

There' so much to choose from I'd just flip a coin if I were you.  Smile

I was in London for New Years 2005 on a marching band trip. We just had a party with all of the other bands in our hotel, but I could hear fireworks all night.

While I didn't get to see all of the parade since I was marching in it, what I did see was good stuff.

Me I hope to be up in the air on an intercontinental flight. Over the Pacific would be nice.

Paris.

I was there last year for New Year and we're going again this year. It was great.

Take the Eurostar, it's much easier and less hassle than a flight. (Do I get excommunicated from A.net for saying that?)
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

If you are looking for partying and good fun, then Paris would be right for you.

You can go to the giant party on the Champs Elysées on the 31st at Midnight but then you would not be able to see the fireworks at the Eiffel Tower. The underground transport (le métro) goes all night on Dec. 31st.

Just make sure you don't run into groups of scums from the banlieues, they can be pretty rough.

Although being Swiss I am spending this year's New Year in St. Petersburg Russia. Might be a bit chilly, but I heard they have some sort of warmening drink.  Wink

Seriously, St. Petersburg is great around this time as well as Moscow (although too expensive especially around this time of year).

Did that in 1999/2000 and it was great. If anything the weather will be much better than in most other places in Europe.

You'll love it. Try and get tickets for the Hogmanay celebrations in the city. It's always amazing. As are the fireworks at midnight. PM me closer to the time; perhaps we can go for pints somewhere.

so fantastic infact that the chances of getting a hotel for new years are near zero. Most hotels will have been fully booked for about the last 12 months!

I suggest you go to Hamburg and go to the Alster about an hour before midnight. If you're lucky, you can even take a walk on the Alster when it's ice is thick enough after freezing or walk around on the Jungfernstieg before midnight to enjoy the beautiful winter night. Once it's midnight, you can expect a spectacular fireworks show on the Alster.

And you don't have to worry about getting to Hamburg, as BA (and I believe LH as well) offers nonstops to HAM from LHR. From there it's just with the 110 bus to the Ohlsdorf tube station, where you can take the U-Bahn U1 directly to Jungfernstieg station from Ohlsdorf. You could also take the S-Bahn, on the S1 line, from Ohlsdorf to Jungfernstieg, but that's more of a detour than if you'd take the U1 line, which has a more direct routing than the S1.

I'd choose Paris or Barcelona.

Athens can also be very good for New Years. There are great parties in all clubs and as long as you know where to go you will be having a good time at least until noon of NY day. As another poster said, the weather is going to be better than other places (not too cold, fewer chances of rain than N. Europe)

I definitely recommend Berlin - I was there to ring in 2007, and it has by far topped my NYE experience anywhere else the world. Among some of the highlights:

1. Firecrackers getting thrown around in subway cars, with the whole train spontaneously bursting into song;

2. Getting kisses on the cheek from at least six girls I'd never met before in my life;

3. 1 million+ drunken Germans.

Need I say more?
Live life to the fullest.

Spent New Years 05/06 here, and it was fun. I've been dissapointed with Prague, but New Years was cool...they park a barge in the Vltava just off the edge of the Charles Bridge...I was in the middle of the bridge and had the greatest view. Also a good view is to go up by Prague Castle. However, I would still choose Budapest over Prague.
