Stripes
Blazing Saddles
Spaceballs
Airplane
The Naked Gun
Caddyshack
Born in East LA
The Great Outdoors

I'd add:
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Young Frankenstein
Police Academy (all except Mission to Moscow)
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Dracula: Dead and Loving It
Smokey and the Bandit (all)
Cannonball Run 1 & 2
I lift things up and put them down.

The trouble with comedies is that my sense of humour changes as time goes by. I used to love the Pink Panther films with Peter Sellars but watching one recently I hardly laughed and thought it was all slapstick. The same with the 'classics' when I was in my teens – e.g. Porky's, Batchelor Party etc.

However, my favourite comedies that have stood the test of time include

La Grande Vadrouille (released in UK/US as "Don't Look Now – We're Being Shot At") which would be top of my list. Sadly, this title is very hard to get hold on in English and on DVD

And in no particular order

Trading Places
The Breakfast Club
The Blues Brothers
Coming To America
Dr Strangelove
The Apartment
Life of Brian
A Fish Called Wanda
Airplane
The Naked Gun
Foul Play
Private Benjamin, and
Planes, Trains and Automobiles

My two favorite comdies are actually verbally vicious dramas:

"All About Eve"
"The Lion In Winter"

Favorite actual comedies:

"My Man Godfrey"
"Bringing Up Baby"
"Some Like It Hot"
"Show People"
Coast to Coast and Border to Border, Ozark Flies YOUR Way!

That is very true. I used to like Revenge of the Nerds II when I was 13. When I watched it when I was 23 I thought it was stupid. I still love the first one.

License to Drive

In 6th grade I thought that film was the whip. I loved it except for the part when they destroyed that Cadillac.

Quoting Kaitak (Reply 12):
Dr. Strangelove

I didn't think of that one. I love Sterling Hayden's character. "I don't deny women, but I do deny them my essence"

I also get a kick out of Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski.

Quoting BCAL (Reply 10):
The Blues Brothers

I wish I could go to Bob's Country Bunker. That is my kind of bar. Any bar that has Falstaff on draft and a Huber Beer neon sign is awesome.

Rat Race

To me the humor has a clear and good flow to it that all builds on you and milks it for all its worth until the end.

Any movie with a character named Eunice is tops in my book.

Anchorman and Airplane are the first ones that I come to think of. Blades of glory is funny as well but not as good as the first ones i mentioned.

In no particular order

Hot Fuzz
Shaun Of The Dead
Life Of Brian
Airplane!
The Naked Gun Series
Les Trois Frères (fr)
Le Boulet (fr)
The Indiana Jones Series
The James Bond Series (I classify those with Roger Moore as comedy  Smile )
The Scary Movie Series
The Police Academy Series (yes, I love low-brow, silly, immature humor  Smile )

There are surely more but I can't think of any right now...

On a side note, how come only the British, Americans and French seem able to make truly funny comedies? I've seen movies from other countries hailed as comedy classics, but I always find them incredibly lame... Any recommendations for good non-English, non-French language comedies?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned:

"It's a mad, mad, mad world"

After watching Buddy Hackett, Don Knotts and all the others, I was in physical pain from laughing and rolling on the floor!
-and that's even more painful between the seat-rows in a movietheatre
-even has some funny flying sequences too...

My favorite comedy, along with Borat. As much as I can remember, this is one of the only films starring Asian Americans, that doesnt portray them in a stereotypical manner.

There is a Swedish movie calles Kopps which is pretty damn funny if you ask me. If you have the slightest bit of small-town experience, I think you will like this movie  Smile
