Moth Plaugue At SYD TV Station

Sat Oct 20, 2007 4:52 am

Seems to be a bit of a moth plaugue in Sydney at the moment, with a TV station being invaded......

I can attest to the moth invasion. I just returned from SYD today and they are everywhere! It's disgusting! I've never seen the city like this. Everywhere I went there were moths, especially at night. They were in restaurants, in the underground shopping areas, even in the airport. The Pitt St. Mall was especially bad. In the lobby of my hotel. EVERYWHERE!!
Freaking moths!!

Well when mankind comes along and builds a big city right in the middle of the moths age old migration path what do you expect? Happens every year, some years are worse than others, depends on the winds to an extent. But the moths don't care, they just know they have to get to the Bogong high plains for summer and the Darling Downs for winter.

After working to SYD just about once a week for the last 3 1/2 years, I can tell you what I didn't expect. I didn't expect to have swarms of moths landing on my head at the Pitt St. Mall, nor have them fly around me while I'm eating dinner in an in-closed air conditioned restaurant, nor have them flying around me while I'm standing in the immigration line at the Sydney airport. I've never seen them this bad since I started going there on a regular basis, and I didn't know it's a yearly migration thing. I must have missed their migration patterns the last few years.  Smile

They're here every year, just that this year for some reason they're in plague proportions. And the city area is getting hit hard. Our house is fully screened on the windows and doors and they are still getting inside!!!! It has been amusing watching the news readers reactions on air, with the moths flying around. Kudos to the female one who had a moth land on her chest while reading an item and she didn't flinch. Most girls would run screaming.

Touch wood, they seem to miss Wollongong. I rather wonder why, you would think it is a nice attractive "light sink" and humans find travel to Syd convenient, apparently not so the moths.

No mention of the bogan moths I see! Are Kath and Kim not on this thread?

Yeah its yearly, but the intensity of it seems to be proportional to the amount of Westley wind. We have had some very strong westerlies this month, which apparently blows them further east than the main migration path. Fortunately (or not) Canberra sits fair square in the middle of the path and the new (1988) Parliament house with its huge lights has confused them no end.

I've never been to Hawaii, but I have spent time in Papua New Guinea and if they are ANYTHING like the ones they have there I will very happily take the moths, thanks very much!  Smile

I'm heading back to SYD this week, could you please call Canberra and ask them to turn off the lights?  Smile

They are, and I'm with you. I'd rather have lots of moths than a plague of flying cockroaches!

yet another reason to get out of Sydney. The moths dont like Melbourne's dry cold climate. 1000 per week cant be wrong!
Everyday is a gift…… but why does it have to be a pair of socks?
