How Much $ You Spend Monthly In The Grocery?

Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:20 am

Hi all,

well this treat is to ask you much do you spend monthley in the grocery store??

well today I was a little bit shocked as I spend around 325 USD (700.000 Bolivares) at the grocery store without buying any special food, etc... well the amount of food should be enough for 2 weeks and 2 persons... but it show that the prices down here in Venezuela are higher and higher every day... + some elemental food are not available as like eggs, milk, sugar, etc..

cheers

I budget about $400 a month for food for myself. Probably due to two factors, my insane consumption of Diet Pepsi and the fact that I only eat fresh meat, so I buy my meat daily from the store. The fresh meat is entirely the result of me not having room for a freezer in the motel that I live in.

Less than $100 a month on groceries... not including beer and spirits that is  Wink

I live with three mates, so we share the cooking and buy in bulk, so cooking together usually keeps the costs down which is useful as we're all students. As I always say, more money to go travelling with Big grin

I'd say $150-200 per month is a typical month for myself. Depends on the cost of Mt. Dew, right now it's $1.38 for a 2 litre bottle so my bills are on the higher end.

In our family, for two adults, in 2006 our average monthly food expenses were:

Grocery Store (mostly from No-Frills): $262 USF
Take-out food: $ 61
Restaurants: $123
Wine & Beer: $ 13

We live fairly modestly, and don't waste much food.

I can understand someone here paying $300+ at the grocery store for two persons.

My guess is that unless you keep track of every penny, many small grocery purchases may not be reported.

well with the prices we have currently here in Venezuela you would easily, as reference, yesterday the price for 1 kg tomato's were 4,50 USD, for 200gram turkey breast 6,00 USD, 1 whole-wheat bread 5,00 USD, so now you can imagine that is isnt very difficult to spend $300 or more ...

My problem is, that I go to the store without a list. I end up buying crap. I spend about $500-$600 for a house of 3 per month, and I could easily cut that in half if I was smarter about it. I also find myself shopping when I am hungry, which turns out to be expensive, and a cart full of snacks and junk.

Will I change? I think about it every time I swipe my debit card at the grocery store. Do I change? DAMN IT!!!!! LOL!

For myself, probably close to $200 a month. Usually I'll do one BIG trip (with my roommate and his car) that comes out to around $100 and then two smaller trips at around $50.

Grocery? You mean McDonalds and wendys right? Because The last time I actualy shopped at a Grocerystore to cook food at home was about 2 1/2 years ago, and at that time I spend about 250.00 for the mont including meats, that was enough for myself and my girlfriend. But now I am single and I run a business Importing zoo animals and exotic pets from places around the globe I am away from home about 3 weeks out of the month so I don't have a choice but to eat out, and that bill is about 600.00 - 700.00 a month. I would love to be able to cook at home again.

But that is not all at Mcdonalds, if you think about it, 1 meal at a tgi fridays for me is about 22.00 and that is just one meal I have 21 days that I have to eat out and that comes out to $462.00 just for the Dinner on those 21 days, and then there is Breakfast and lunch (however i usually take advantage of the free breakfasts that the hotels offer in their restaurants) but the lunch is about 9.00 a day and that is $189.00. and that totals $651.00 (on the road)
That dosen't include when I am back Home for the remainder of the time. Wow, i just realized that if i was on the road the entire month I would be spending almost 1,000.00 a month to eat! Thank goodness it is a tax write-off.

These days...two adults and 4 cats...around $800 a month.

After doing my shopping today, I'd have to say it's realistically around $75 per week for myself and my cat. I wanted reuben sandwiches for lunch this week, and the fixin's for those came in at around 25 bux alone, when you add up the corned beef, swiss cheese, rye bread, sauerkraut, 1000 island, pickles, etc.

I try to save where I can, like the store had a deal on Honey Nut Cheerios this week--if you bought 4 boxes they came out to a buck fifty a box, which is about half price, so I bought the 4 and now I have Cheerios to last me until Christmas, LOL.

700k bolos for groceries? man.. that's a lot for just 2 weeks, considering that you didn't get eggs, milk or sugar. Although if we exchange those Bs. into USD it would only be USD 120 @ 5800bs/USD which is the market rate.

I used to spend 500k for myself for the entire month and that's when we at least had milk when I lived in Venezuela.

This was interesting, I really didn't know how much I spend on food and such exactly. I checked my credit card bill and found out last month I spent around 300 Euros/450$ in month in the grocery store, for one person only. I seldom eat out. Finland is rather expensive, but less than Ireland or Denmark in EU. I need to start saving now, if I want to travel somewhere in the winter...
Good news was that I spent only 60e in bars ?

Paying almost everything with card is dangerous, you easily spend more than you should... perhaps I should go back to cash, more or less. The problem is that Finland is very 'plastic', even the taxis prefer cards.

Typically I shot for US$50 per week, and that generally includes some non-food items. Though yesterday I spent $90 at my local Kroger, but I stocked up a bit as my cupboard was getting a little barren -- I did have a list but bought quite a few items off of it. $50 a week for myself is pretty doable and I can usually hit that amount without much trouble.

When I was doing my master's a couple of years ago I budgeted $35/wk for groceries (and this was at the more expensive grocery store in my area -- Harris Teeter's for those who care). I would come in w/ my list and a calculator and keep a running total as I shopped.

2 adults and 3 kids, we spend roughly $400.00/mth
Now this will increase once my wife stops breastfeeding in a few months but it should increase by just a wee bit.

I usually do 2 trips a month. One trip is the big one $250 worth of all our basic stuffs including meat, veggies , fruit,.... the balance is usually made on a 2nd trip to buy more meat and odd things that for some reason i missed the first trip or we really enjoyed and need more of some particular item("something".

checkmark  Exactly. My meats come from Trader Joe's, who advertise organic, non-anti-biotic produced meats, poultry and fish (still want to try their sockeye salmon  tongue  ) simply because I don't trust grocerers who don't advertise their meats in the same way. Trader Joe's is the only store who does that near where I live. So my grocery bill adds up a bit more because of that.

With Trader Joe's for the meats, Aldis for the smaller items, dairy and breads and (when I renew my membership) Costco for the bulk, it adds up to under $200. Not bad for eating healthy.

About 600 Euros/month for a family of 5, just for the food.

It sounds reasonable when I read this thread, but I would like to decrease it. I just don't know how to do it.  Smile

200 to 300 euro per month for myself.

When I was in college, I made do with 50-80 euro per month (or rather, the equivalent in Belgian franks). I only shopped at Aldi and Lidl then, and I figured out a way to obtain free beer (legally). The free beer unfortunately made me go over 100kg (200 pounds) in no time, so I had to let it go.

I was extremely low on cash recently, so I tried an experiment. I found you could actually survive a month on 30 euro. Nothing classy of course, but I never went hungry either.

Quite easy, in fact:

- no eating out
- no soft drinks, no alcohol (just water and cheap tea)
- cheap pasta with nothing but cheap olive oil
- for breakfast, a cup of tea and two chocolate wafers (a pack of 9 sells for 0.70 euro at Aldi)
- eat everything that's left in your pantry. When you think "hell, I've nothing to eat" and go shopping, it's not true: you have tons of foodstuffs at home, just be creative and use them. You can go a really long way with those supposedly unmatchable and unworkable ingredients gathering dust in your drawers

I didn't need to take it to such extremes, but I enjoyed the challenge. It certainly helped me understand how people in poor countries survive on one buck a day. It's possible, even in Belgium. (Obviously, we're talking only food here. I did NOT stop washing to save soap, and I paid my rent and internet bill).

Hmmmm.... I don't know how much I spend per month on groceries! Prices are so high here in rural Alaska that most don't even bother looking at the prices. If they need it, they buy it. Here is a short list of current prices in Nome.

12 pack Pepsi/Coke $9.09
1 Gallon Milk $7.49
1/2 gallon Minute Maid $7.49
Fresh Asparagus $4.99lb
Apples $2.99lb
Bananas $1.49lb
Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream (little container) $6.99
Quart Ice Cream $6.69

Its not uncommon to spend $50-70 on a hand basket worth of food.

It'll be all the organic products I buy.

If all you buy is organic food, I'd hate to see what the inorganic food looks like...
