Winter 08 FRA Meet

Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:45 pm

Since it seems like the old thread was left in Sweden when they changed the servers i am starting a new one. The proposed dates were 22. - 24. February. We were also talking about flying the LH A300 and/or LAN Chile A340. I am sure some of the others with better memory than me can fill inn here. Have anybody looked more into these flights? Also, are these the final dates? I am scheduled to work that Saturday, but i think i should be able to switch.

I think the list of interested was like this: (if i left somebody out, it is not intentional  Wink )

Thanks for bringing this back up again!  Smile I hope those are the dates, I have flights booked for part of my trip; the return home the following Tuesday. One minor problem is that a relative has just announced she's marrying her fiance in February... I need to get conformation of the date though - fingers crossed that it doesn't clash with the meet. After that I'll start to think about getting a flight out to FRA, depending on where else I might be going I'll see about the LAN Chili flight too.

As I already posted in the other thread: There will be a mini FRA meeting on the 7th and 8th of December, I'll be there with a friend to meet MrNiji, CamAir and Leskova, in the afternoon of the 8th we'll watch Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Schalke 04 but in the evenings of the 7th and 8th we'll go and party somewhere in downtown Frankfurt.  drunk  Every other A.netter is of course welcome to join us for partying, rumor has it that MrNiji gets in almost every club without paying.  Wink

Just drop us an eMail if you want to join!

Patrick

PS: Of course is everyone also welcome to join us for the football game, but I am afraid that all tickets for seats next to us are sold out already.

Basically just trying to keep this thread alive  Wink. Who knows if it will be viewable if it gets archived. It seems like the dates are set to the 22.- 24th. Dan has already started booking flights, and we all know that it is no small task to figure out his routings Big grin. I´ll make the arrangement to switch the weekend i am working. So what do people think about hotels? Staying near the airport or in the city center?

Well, at least I'm not the only one thinking about flying via MAD this time  Wink

It is good though to have set dates - I have heard from the family that their wedding is in early February, so I can definately make it, without making them change their wedding day  silly

To as an update to the idea about going via MAD, myself and Bev (Ndebelebev) are definately planning to take the LAN A340-300 flight - I just need to get confirmation that I can have the Friday off to fly down to MAD from BHX. If anyone else is interested, the fares are pretty enticing;

MAD-FRA 14:10-16:50 LAN 704
FRA-MAD 19:40-22:15 LAN 705

One way is £91.00, or it's just £61.80 return - not at all bad for two flights on an A340, especially in such a stunning livery!  Wink

It is tempting Dan. I have too look into it. The problem is that that week is winter-break here in my part of Norway, so i am not sure i can get more time of. It almost destroyed the entire trip when i found out. I was supposed to work Saturday 23., and of course the others were not to keen to trade days with me during the winter-break (i guess i can understand that they want to spend the time with their kids). Thankfully it worked out, so i will be attending the meet. The problem with flying LAN for me is that there is no flights that leave early enough to be in MAD in time for the LAN flight. So if i am going to fly on the 340 i have to fly to MAD the day before.

Not much activity in this thread  Smile. I will find out during next week if i can make the 340 flight from MAD or not. So about hotels. Are people staying near the airport or in the city-center?

I think I'll be at this one. I'll confirm after Christmas. It depends on whether I go to New York / Chicago / Boston in the week before.

I have been itching to go to FRA, and an a.net meet is a good excuse. I would have appreciated this being a week earlier, but no matter.

I have just been looking through Expedia at prices. At £166 for flights from MAN and hotel I am seriously interested in this.

Do we have a hotel preference? Expedia pulls the ACHAT Hotel Airport Frankfurt as the cheapest airport hotel, with a good few in central FRA being cheaper.

I can't book until December at the earliest really, but this is very tempting.

P.S. I am in CGN next month for a couple of days if anyone is interested in a mini meet?

I have tried to ask about preferences a few times, but not much response so far. I think perhaps city center would be better. I guess it gives us more choices about places to go in the evening, without worrying about getting back to the airport-area.

Hey Guys and gals

Will be booking my flights soon. I've found this:

MAN-ZRH Helvetic F100
ZRH-MAD Swiss A320
MAD-FRA Spanair A320
FRA-MAN Lufthansa A320 for £130

Then add:

MAD-FRA-MAD LANChile A340 for £61

6 flights for under £200 isn't bad at all me thinks...

Not at all Bev! Plus, the A340 in LANs livery is just beautiful Big grin

I definately am taking the LAN flight from MAD to FRA on Saturday, just booked a BMI Baby flight from BHX-MAD on the Friday morning... sod Uni that day, whatever it is can wait! I have to hang on for a little while before booking the LAN flights themselves though; I think my family are going to be in Menorca at Easter, so instead of simply not using the return flight to MAD, I'll aim to book it so that I can fly BHX-FRA-MAD-MAH to Menorca at Easter, using return portion of my ticket then. So, just need the family to make their minds up about when/if they are going to be there.

The more the merrier - looking like it will be a good meet!  bigthumbsup

It´s time to bump this thread again. Big grin Seems someone else is adding themselves to the list everytime i do so.... Been a while since we heard from some of the others. Still attending?

I will book my flights when the December salary comes in. Been looking at this routing:

OSL-BRU-BCN on SN (RJ86 and B734)
BCN-MAD on JK (B717)
MAD-FRA on LA (A343) (this one is already booked for Friday)
and then a simple LH A320 on FRA-OSL on my way back (if i can´t come up with something more creative  Wink )

Could one of the German people please explain me the winter tire regulations. From what I have heard winter tires are mandatory even if the weather is OK? Till what date are winter tires mandatory? My car goes into the garage for the MOT early february. So by then I might not have winter tires anymore?

Great. The more the merrier. We haven´t made any specific plans for the meet yet. It is basically a "welcome back spotter terrace meet". In the old thread we just figured out dates and thought about "exotic" ways to get to FRA, so you haven´t missed much.

Anybody given hotels any more thought? I think i prefer to stay in the city-center.

Not had any more thoughts yet, but the city centre does sound like a good idea. If not, then an airport hotel with a shuttle bus is pretty important, saves a fortune in taxis.

Right. I have checked on Expedia and the cheapest option I have is a friday night departure from BCN on LH arriving in FRA at 22:15, staying at the Golden Leaf Hotel, returning on sunday at 16:00.. all that for a lovely sum of €150... not bad.

When I get my paycheck I will book.

See ya all in FRA!

Myself and BmiBaby737 are interested in this, as we've been looking for somewhere to go for a while, this seems perfect!

I've found flights for £85, LHR-FRA BA A320, FRA-LHR LH A300. My only issue is catching the flight which departs from LHR at 0610 IIRC, and I'm by no means an early riser!

Dan, how are you planning to get back to the UK after the FRA-MAD flight, I can't find flights back from MAD at a reasonable price!?

Hopefully I'll be able to make something of this.

Tom... Why don't you get yourselves a return flight to MAD and join us on the LA 343 flight MAD-FRA-MAD. Thats what I'm doing anyhow. I'm flying MAN-MAD via ZRH on the 22nd, flying MAD-FRA on LA on the 23rd, flying FRA-MAD on the return portion of my LA ticket on the 24th and flying MAD-MAN via FRA (yes going back to FRA) on the 25th. All for just under £200. That way I get plenty of flying done and 4 new airlines for me that weekend...

Ah, that makes sense.

Time of the day is also another factor, a 0600 flight is going to be very difficult, but a 1000 flight will be great, but then that means less action at the airport.

What say you?

Hi everybody!

I've lost this thread out of sight but I'm still in, don't worry!

Even though I live close to FRA I'm tempted to join in on the incredibly cheap LAN roundtrip (78 Eur right now), FRAMAD on Friday and MADFRA on Saturday. I'd be together with a bunch of you on the Saturday flight as I see. Hey and I earn 100% miles on AAdvantage. It's a booker.

Just have to check some dates and things. But even if I don't do the flight, I'm in.

FRA was simply too awkward.

Having been away from A.net for a while, I stumpled across this thread for the first time. No idea at the moment if I will be able to attend, but will keep an eye open.

Late reply, but ...:
No, unlike countries like Switzerland and Asutria (IIRC) there is (still) no law mandating to have winter tires on your car. However, you are obliged to use tires on your car that are suitable for the current weather conditions. This means, that if one causes an accident or even blocks traffic due to the use of "summer tires" during snow, you a) likely will get a fine and b) might loose cover from your car insurance (actually, the insurance will take care of other people's costs, but will come after you in order to charge you with their expenses).

I don't own a car so I can't really answer here. But I don't know about such a law. I have think it's more or less the same as HT described it for Germany
PS: Holger, what do you mean with Asutria (etwa Oesterreich Big grin )
PPS: Sorry for hijacking this FRA-thread. I have no idea if I will attend

Switzerland: MIsinterpretation on my side: Snow tires are not mandated, but in case of an accident caused by using summer tires your insurance will make you liable.

Quoting FelixZRH (Reply 36):

indeed, "Austria": There is a new law becoming effective on 01-JAN-2008 under which it says:
Between 01-NOV and 15-APR a vehicle (car) up to 3.5 metric tons may be used on winterly road conditions (snow, ice, ..) only, if it is equipped with snow tires.
Fines will range between 35 and 5000 Euro. Police will be allowed to deny on the spot any onward travel with a unsuitably equipped car.

After some deeper research, I found that in Europe only some nordic and baltic countries really mandate to have a car equipped with snow tires. Some of these countries make exceptions for foreign-registered cars.

Independet from any national law on snow tires, any road (especially in the Alps mountains) can be declared to be used with snow chains only.

OK, so I've just spoken to LH526, and the two of us are going to take the LAN flight FRA-MAD on Friday afternoon and back MAD-FRA on Saturday.

Now I see there are a bunch of you on that segment, so I'd like to know your seat assignments so we can get seats near you. (I understand LAN allows you to reserve a seat without charge)

Hey... I'm on that flight MAD-FRA on the 23rd... When I booked it I don't recall being allowed to book my seats... So I just joined LANPass and am still not allowed to reserve seats... I got this message

La clase o el vuelo no permite reserva de asiento.

And from what Spanish I can understand is that for the class of travel I booked I cannot reserve a seat...

See you on the flight anyhow..

I've put in my request to have this time period off.
I probably will fly out on Thursday (overnight) and
leave on Sunday. Airfare is less than 500USD R/T.

Is there a specific event agenda being planned?
Like a Fraport tour, or just plane watching from
the observation deck?

Bev, maybe you should call LAN office, I've booked the same flight in June through Galileo at work and was able to book seats, no problem...

I think i can answer this one for Dan. He is flying FRA-TXL and THF-BHX on his way back, saving the "return" part of the LAN flight for an other occasion.

That's right Big grin Makes the trip a little more interesting and also means I get to see THF before it's closure, the architecture is simply stunning from all photographs I have seen. In full I'll be flying BHX-MAD-FRA-TXL/THF-BRU-BHX, can't wait either!

They are definately confirmed - I think a good number of us have already gotten the flights we are taking booked. Good to see some more members attending the meet, will be great to see old faces again and likewise new ones.

My internet threw a wobbly for the past week or so, and currently I'm about to be dragged back to the family and invited to eat copious amounts of unhealthy food (mmmmmm!) but I will get around later to booking the last segments as I've now been paid by work.

Hello and a belated Merry Christmas or Frohe Weihnachten (choose your preference) to everyone. I would love to meet up with anyone not going on the flight Madrid. I thought about it but even if there are still cheap fares available I doubt I will make the trip. Please feel free to drop me an email with details on the meeting either before or after the flight. Cheers and hope to meet up with some other a.netters soon.  Smile

Right I am all booked up but with a slight schedule change, since LH decided to put the flight prices up, I have to travel out on thrursday afternoon and return on saturday night.

If there is a meeting on Saturday then count me in all day! I want to use thursday afternoon and friday to do touristy stuff around Frankfurt.

See you all there!

OK, save the FRA-TXL sector I'm now completely booked for this trip!  bigthumbsup

22.02.2008 ... BHX-MAD ... BMI Baby ... B737-300
23.02.2008 ... MAD-FRA ... LAN Chile ... A340-300
24.02.2008 ... FRA-TXL ... Lufthansa ... ?
26.02.2008 ... THF-BRU ... Brussels Airlines ... BAe146/RJ
26.02.2008 ... BRU-BHX ... Brussels Airlines ... BAe146/RJ

then

01.04.2008 ... BHX-FRA ... FlyBe ... EMB145
01.04.2008 ... FRA-MAD ... LAN Chile ... A340-300
02.04.2008 ... MAD-LCY ... BA Cityflyer ... RJ85/100

Couldn't let that return sector on the LAN A340 go to waste! On a side topic, I heard that the MAD-LCY route was being shifted from the RJ100 to the 85, because of weight issues and that the smaller aircraft could actually carry more pax - anyone know if this is going ahead? Should be a great trip, a couple of 'new' airlines, several 'new' airports and lots of 'new' routes. Looks like there is going to be a good few of us A.netters on the LAN flight, and as many are going to be in MAD the night before, perhaps we could all meet up for a drink and perhaps some tapas?

All the best, looking forwards to it already!

Looks like A.netters fly on different dates on LA704 MAD - FRA:
22-FEB: DYFlyer
23-FEB: PlymSpotter, Ndebelebev

Did I miss anybodies finalized flight schedule ?

When will the *official* part be held ? Saturday or Sunday ?
_________
Currently looking into making this a daytrip only (MAD only on option), I will have to wait until early January before there will be a decision whether the planned operation of my mum will go ahead as planned or not. Apart from the knee that was scheduled to be replaced, an recent accident (human vs. human) has left her with new pains from her hip as well as from her back (history of discus prolaps). At present, one doctor says "no", the other one we will see early January.
Ironically, that accident happened the day after I booked my vacation for April 2008 (Award flight to IAH), a date by which my mum should have been able to drive a car on her own again.
The whole story (more or less) is a deja vu from 2007 where I had to cancel one vacation in Texas (my mum's first knee replacement) and had to cut a replacement-vacation in NE-U.S. into two parts (virus infection of my father).
Event (= vacation) planning for my parent's 50th (= Golden) Wedding Anniversary later in 2008 also have been put on hold for now.
