What a striking resemblance, but he's not wearing his retired cap, so it can't be him.  Smile

We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better...stronger...faster......  duck

Alright, who can make up an "ANCFlyer Has A Posse" image for us (I think that may be a future thread title for one of the LAS Meet threads)?

Alas I am safely tucked away in Kenai battling the snow fall, not the fires . . .

Does bear a resemblance though. Too bad those DCUs look like crap . . . and last for crap . . . give me a set of Cotton Fatigues starched heavy any time.

I'm a San Diegan -- we've been through this before although it has been 40 years since anything so bad. What struck me in the slideshow of the 'military helping'. What the hell do they need rifles for to help people?

Crazy.

Well, at the risk of sounding like a warmonger: when events such as this occur, be they in SAN or MSY or ANC, some folks can't seem to act human . . . even those that were previously above reproach . . . there will be looting, there will an increase in crime . . . if events unfold in a negative fashion, they may be called upon - at the behest ofthe Governor - to assist the police. They are National Guard troops of course.

Further, a weapon is part of the military uniform. Standard issue.

I don't find it extraordinary at all.

The military carries rifles, firemen have hoses, The police pack donuts... err.... guns. Its just part of the job description.

Look at the picture again.

This time, look at the magazine well of the visable rifle. Notice something missing?

forgive my Ignorance but are National Guards responsible for helping the "Refugees" or are they to assist the firefighters, either way I dont see the point of their carrying their weapons around, but that only reflects about 6-8 soldiers that I saw in that picture. So what are they supposed to do?

The National Guard is charged with performing whatever duties the Governor and the Adjutant General assign. That could be - depending on the MOS (Military Occupational Speciality) of the soldier - anything from Water Purification to Traffic Control.

I don't find your inquiry ignorant at all by the by . . .

The Military Police mobilized to assist in this disaster will likely synch up with the local law enforcement, provide additional traffic control support, additional patrols (can even be deputized under NGR(AR) 500-1), etc. The grunts, well they'll assist with helping people to shelters, and patrol the streets of the affected areas. The cooks, bakers and candlestick makers will support those folks otherwise engaged.

All are - however - soldiers. And a soldier deployed be it to their back yard or to some big sand box in the Middle East are equipped with a weapon. Sidearm, RIfle, Tank . . .

I find nothing unusual about it.

I spent the last week in Palmdale, CA and we had some good smoke float over the mountains starting about Thursday night with the onshore flow.

While not San Diego, I swore I saw ANC on my ONT-PHX flight! That is fire country...I think he is fighting the flames, despite what he says!

yeah I see, and obviously its a "policing" and humanitarian job, not "firefighting", I was thinking they were going to be on the front lines with the Firefighters  Big grin

ACU's. Yea they do tend to fall apart fairly quickly and kind of stand out but at night time it is even harder to see than the BDU's and DCU's!
