New Years Eve In London Tips Please

Fri Oct 26, 2007 3:30 am

This December I will be travelling to Europe, I have never been anywhere in Europe but Spain and I was still a kid so I am very excited.

I am lucky to be able to spend New Years in London, but I dont know the city and neither do my friends I am travelling with, what are the best tips for what to do that night! I am looking for partying and drinking but would like to be close to the fireworks at 12. I went to times square last year and was terribly disappointed, there was absolutely nothing to do.

Primrose Hill in London is nice; it's not going to anywhere near as busy as the banks of the river, where all the action happens. That said though, if you can get a spot somewhere near the London Eye (opposite side, ideally) you'll get great views.

Yes, head to Edinburgh instead.

New Year's Eve in London is bloody awful, and doesn't begin to compare to the kind of stuff cities like Syndey or Paris can serve up.

If you're wanting to see the fireworks on the Thames then get there bloody early! Like a fool I sat in the pub in the Strand till half 11pm and hoped to get there. No way! There must have been 100,000 people there, and the police had barred all access to teh river. The only reason my girlfriend and I got through was because I had a broken leg and was on crutches.

It was a good firework show though, and a great buzz.

Remember aswell, on New Years Eve, all London public transport is free (tube, buses).

Watch your wallet- a friend lost his. Pickpocketing is rife in the capital at the best of times...

Bit of a waste of time IMO. The last two years Edinburgh has been a washout due to high winds and rain, with everything cancelled.

Back to the London question. I haven't been personally, but from what I can gather the palce to be is on the embankment near the eye for the fireworks, or further along at Somerset House where they have the ice rink and entertainment, with still a fair view of thew fireworks. Leicester Square has a smallish funfair.

I went last year and stood on the corner by Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. Arrived at 2030, with only 2 bottles of beer thinking we would be able to buy some from the little Tesco's at Westminster Station, but it was closed !!. We stood there for 3.5 hours listening to the suicide hour music that was playing through loudspeakers, our only other entertainment was watching a huge steaming pile of horse shit and waiting for someone to stand in it - which they did eventually !! ha ha.

The firework display lasted all of 10 minutes then we went home again. This year I'll watch on TV in the warmth of my front room !!.

If you are going down by the river, make sure you wrap up well and take a plentiful supply of alcohol with you !!

Oh and there are usually toilet facilities provided on the opposite corner from where I stood too  Wink .

What about pubs or clubs? anything good? anything close by to the river or would it be impossible to get there?

Also can I take champagne bottles or they dont allow glass containers?
