Driving On The Autobahn

Sat Oct 27, 2007 11:08 pm

This question is for German Drivers or for those who have driven on the autobahn

How fast have you driven on the unrestricted roads?

What car were you driving?

What is your usual average speed?

Did you drive your car at a very High rate of speed for a long period of time? I ask that question regarding that gas mileage because if you drive a car at its top speed, in no time will your fuel be over, atleast that is how it is for the bugatti Big grin , its gets 2MPG at its top speed.

Top speed 185kph/117mph with a 1995 VW Golf 1.6 petrol. That's as fast as it will go. Normally I only do around 140kph/87mph. A trip to Frankfurt is actually very good to my mileage. When going to work I have to drive over congested roads so the mileage is worse. My trips to Germany are always in weekends so no real problems with traffic.

Average somewhere between 140-160 km/h, depends on the traffic, weather etc.

I reached 200 km/h with an Opel Astra Station and still people were pushing behind me...

Weather and traffic permitting that is indeed the normal speed for the right and (if available) center lane. The left lane in Germany (and the rest of Europe actually) is used only for overtaking so that's where you can expect the fast people. Of couse for a two lane autobahn you will find the trucks on the right at their max speed of 80kph, those driving up to ~140kph weaving in and out and those going faster tend to stick on the left lane untill someone approaches them from behind fast. Of course they should not hog the left lane like that, but that's another story.

My Autobahn and all-time speed record was 190kph/119mph on the A2 somewhere between Hannover and Berlin in my father's Audi 80 B4. I was in the car when my father took it to 205kph/128 mph on another occasion and in about the same place.

I'd say the usual cruising speed on the 3-lane bahns in normal traffic is about 140 kph (90mph) and above 160 (100) in the fast lane, which is normally only used for overtaking. Sometimes, however, you'll take your car to 170/100 and think you're going fast, only to see a Porsche go by you in a blur. The fastest I ever saw in Germany was a nut in a Porsche doing probably 240/150mph.

My all time speed record is 278 kph on the clock - so 258kph (160mph). The car was a Audi A8 4.2 TDI quattro. The fuel consumption was around 11 mpg (diesel) . With that rate of fuel consumption I could have driven about 225 miles (90 liter) with the A8. I didn't maintain this speed longer than about 20 minutes (slightly less) with a short speed limited section between two high speed runs. In those 20 minutes I could cover about 50 miles.

Concerning the average speed on unlimited Autobahns - it depends on many factors mainly traffic density. On 3 lane Autobahns with moderate traffic density, good wheather and without limit I drive always above 170 kph (105 mph) and often for long stretches above 200 kph (125mph). With that speed there are always some people who will be faster an hence overtake me. Concerning the car - I don't own one but I drive a rented car once in a while.

geez, one would have to be crazy to drive that speed constantly, or filthy rich. If im not mistaken the A8 gets about 19MPG on gas on the highway in the US, that means about 70MPH.

Well, Germany's second biggest party (social democrats) has decided on an important party meeting to favor a general speed limit... So it will be only a matter of time until the last unrestricted Autobahn will be limited.

Quoting LAXspotter (Reply 7):

I guess if you can afford to own an A8 you won't care. I didn't care this day because I don't get the chance to drive an A8 very often - so the high fuel consumption didn't bother me much.
BTW you won't get the chance to drive this speed constantly although it is possible to drive more than 150 miles with only short restricted section during the night.

I did 184kmh with a Seat Altea 1.6 in 2006 and 209kmh in an Opel Vectra Estate this past summer. They were both rental cars and that was the respective vehicle's top speed. In the Seat I drove it at max for about 10 mins between Koln and Dusseldorf, and the Vectra I topped quite a few times driving between Heidelberg and several nearby cities (Frankfurt, Stuttgart, etc) and in runs to France and Switzerland. It was an interesting experience, but for the most part we stayed around 140-150kmh. You are right that the faster you go the more fuel you burn, and we learned the lesson fast!

That wasn't a criticism, pelican, I'm just sure I would have to change my seat's upholstery after experiencing such a speed in a regular car.  Smile

I know you feel speed differently depending on the car you're in, and I've never been inside a A8. But holy shit man, 278 is almost the takeoff speed of a 747. I'd never dream of going that fast, even if I could.

It doesn't feel that fast because the handling is superb.
And don't forget it was only 278 kph on the speedo. The A8 is limited to about 258 kph (officially 250 kph)
BTW there are still people going faster...

much faster, one has to only check out the videos on youtube. Funny thing is, there are vidoes about people speeding excessively in other countries and one countries that stands out is India, lol. The people are "bragging" about going 120KPH, lol rotfl, one has to go check out the type of cars most people drive and the roads.

Actually, it felt just like driving at any other speed, it wasn't even particularly loud as that car could go up to 240.

I don't like going that fast because I've seen just too many serious accidents, most of them on the German Autobahns. And at least three of them happened very close to me. Even at 130, there's not much to salvage after a collision. At 200kph, your margin of security is thin indeed. One time, a small piece of concrete from a viaduct fell on our windshield, at about 150. It felt like a bomb exploding in our faces and severely damaged the windshield. At 200, it could have done my head in, or caused the driver to lose control.

There's just no point in speeding. I can't think of a whole lot of things that are worth risking my health or life, and that of others, in such a way. Plus, I just don't like to drive. I'm not planning on buying a car anywhere in the foreseeable future. Completely pointless in a large city.

Toast, youre a very reasonable person, and youre points are spot on the chances of dying at the speed are so much more than at 120KPH. You guys are lucky in Europe, a car is really pointless in those places, I wish I could say the same about here.

I've been germany and my friend drove very very very fast - more than 250km/hr...Of course not, i don't feel like earthquake in the car. I'm sure you will feel like the plane take off.

Compare to the speeding, it's interesting to see that the plane take-off at the speed of 250 km/h or more. Thus our cars aren't an airplanes.

I was talking to my friends in australia that i saw old people could drive fast in the autobahn. They laughed because we know that old people don't like to drive fast. lol

I made a quick trip to Germany from the UK in May 2005 for only two reasons - first of all, to fly on a BA 757-200 and secondly, to hire a BMW and drive on the autobahn.

I did manage to get on G-BPEE LHR-FRA and I did hire a 320i from Sixt...unfortunately couldn't get anything better than that. Anyway, I took it to right around 220kph on the autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg. I'm not sure if I actually got to 220 (I was trying to look straight ahead of me) but it did go over 215kph. Good times.

Just a quick note, doesn't look like anyone mentioned it yet, the recommended speedlimit on the Autobahn (where there are no speedlimits in affect) is 130 km/h.

On a personal note, I usually drove between 140 - 160 km/h on average for my morning commute but only about 100 km/h or less on my afternoon commute (rush hour on the A3 and A516). To be honest, I've never made note on what my personal record was, but on Sundays when the bahn is free of trucks, driving 180 km/h plus between DUS and FRA was normal.

The quote he cited is from the title song from M*A*S*H the Film (same song as from the series, only with lyrics).

My father never went faster than 130 km/h, because of these reasons:

1. I was still a kid. Had I been an adult, I may have had more leverage to get him go faster, or I would have taken the car out for a joyride at close to 200 km/h myself.  Wink
2. Most of the time, we'd drive with my mother, and she gets all hysterical when we exceed 100 km/h. When my father goes faster, she starts yelling like an insane person, which is the spark of many arguments between the two, because she always tends to side against my father when it comes to driving (though I reckon he has become a bit more of a reckless driver in his old age), even though the only accident he's had with all of us on board wasn't even his fault at all (a medical professor from Aachen rear-ended us, but at least he checked up on us and paid for the damage to our car in full). Maybe one day, when I have licence and car in Germany, I'll take her on the Autobahn again and get her to overcome that fear of high speed.  Wink

I've got a Peugeot 206 Diesel, its top speed is 160 kph. Mostly I drive between 120 and 140 kph.
My record was 210 kph with an old Opel Vectra.

250 kph, according to the speed indicator.

Quoting LAXspotter (Thread starter):
What car were you driving?

Many differents, for example: BMW 540i or Audi A8 4.2.

Quoting LAXspotter (Thread starter):
What is your usual average speed?

Usually I go as fast as possible when the conditions allow it. Just this afternoon I had a bit fun on the A44 between Soest and Dortmund, my top speed today was 230 kph.

Quoting LAXspotter (Thread starter):
I ask that question regarding that gas mileage because if you drive a car at its top speed, in no time will your fuel be over

I don't care about the car's gas consumption when I drive at high speed, the fun is it worth to blow a few liters more.
